we played american football once, and the coach when he came to me said "You see that boy across from you over there? (points to boy 3 times my size) Keep an eye on him" and gave no other instruction

when the round began and the large boy came rushing at me, i just did exactly as i was told and nimbly dodged right out of the way, while keeping the closest of watch on his every movement, even as he went chased after that weird ball thingy

if the coach had asked me anything about his movements I'd have been able to tell him, but he just told me to sit out for the rest of the game, no idea why

I remember feeling #seen and emotionally touched very deeply by the original version of this when I first saw it. It felt validating and comforting, and my thoughts constantly went back to it.

In retrospect, the mindset the image represented was an excuse I used to keep myself from asking the questions I needed to, it was comforting because it meant I didnt have to listen to the little voice in my head that was asking if "man" was the right label for me, and that voice was SO scary to me back then.
