Inconveniently Yours
Jason Todd x Bruce’s Assistant!Reader | PT: 7
Synopsis: A familiar someone crashes your date at the park and it sends you into a spiral that Jason helps you out of.
Jason leaned back further into the bench like he had nowhere else to be.
One arm stretched along the backrest behind you, the other holding his phone loosely in his hand as he scrolled through something. The cigarette had long since burned out, crushed into the gravel beside the bench.
Your book rested open in your lap.
Jason’s hand had somehow ended up on your thigh at some point.
Not in a dramatic way.
Just… there.
Heavy, warm, casual.
Like he’d been doing it for years.
You pretended not to notice.
Which was a lie.
Because it was very noticeable.
You turned another page.
Jason scrolled on his phone.
His thumb absently brushed your leg once.
You didn’t look up.
Jason glanced at you out of the corner of his eye.
“You’re not even reading anymore.”
“Yes I am.”
“You’ve been on that page for like two minutes.”
“I’m savoring it.”
Jason snorted quietly.
You elbowed him lightly.
“Shh.”
Jason smirked but went back to his phone.
For a few minutes it was just the quiet of the park again. Ducks, people walking past, the occasional breeze shifting the pages of your book.
Then—
“Jason?”
You both looked up.
Your stomach dropped.
A tall guy in a dark jacket was walking toward the bench, slowing when he noticed you two sitting there.
Dark hair.
Bright grin.
Your brain immediately recognized him.
Jason groaned under his breath.
“Of course.”
The guy stopped a few feet away, eyebrows lifting.
“Oh wow.”
You immediately sat up straighter.
Jason’s hand was still resting on your thigh.
He did not move it.
“Hi,” the guy said, looking between you two.
Jason leaned back further against the bench like he was deliberately trying to look more relaxed.
“Dick.”
Dick Grayson’s grin widened.
“Wow,” he said again, glancing between you and Jason. “Did not expect to see Bruce’s—”
He pointed at you.
“—secretary.”
Jason turned his head slowly.
“Assistant.”
Dick blinked.
“…What.”
Jason’s tone went flat.
“Executive assistant.”
You froze.
Because that was exactly how you corrected him.
All the time.
Dick looked between the two of you again.
Then looked at Jason’s hand on your thigh.
Then back at your face.
“Oh.”
Your brain started panicking immediately.
Dick’s grin got even worse.
“OHH.”
Jason sighed heavily.
“Stop.”
Dick pointed at you again, delighted.
“Bruce’s executive assistant.”
Jason rubbed his forehead.
“Yes.”
Dick leaned closer, clearly enjoying himself.
“Wow. Okay. This is—” He gestured vaguely between you two, “—unexpected.”
You tried to look calm.
You probably looked like someone who had just been caught robbing a bank.
Jason noticed immediately.
His thumb brushed lightly against your thigh.
Grounding.
Annoyed now, Jason looked up at his brother.
“Why are you here.”
Dick shrugged.
“Jogging.”
Jason looked him up and down.
“You’re holding a smoothie.”
Dick lifted the smoothie cup slightly.
“Post-jogging.”
Jason rolled his eyes.
Dick looked back at you again, still smiling.
“Hi,” he said cheerfully.
You managed a small wave.
“Hi.”
Dick nodded slowly like he was processing something very entertaining.
Jason glared at him.
“If you tell Bruce—”
“I wasn’t going to,” Dick said quickly.
Then he paused.
“…But now I’m curious.”
Jason groaned.
“Dick.”
Dick held his hands up, “Relax, relax.” He looked back at Jason’s hand again.
Still on your thigh.
Still very obvious.
Dick grinned slowly, “Wow,” he said again.
Jason pinched the bridge of his nose.
“You’re insufferable.”
Dick patted his shoulder. Then he looked at you again, amused.
“Well. Good luck with him.”
Jason looked up sharply.
“Get lost.”
Dick laughed and started walking away again, shaking his head like he’d just witnessed the most interesting thing all week.
You watched him disappear down the path.
Then slowly turned to Jason.
“…Oh my god.”
Jason sighed.
“Yeah.”
Your voice dropped to a whisper.
“He’s going to tell Bruce.”
Jason shook his head.
“No he’s not.”
“How do you know?!”
Jason glanced down the path where Dick disappeared.
Then back at you.
“Because now he’s enjoying this too much.”
Jason didn’t move right away after Dick disappeared down the path.
He just watched the direction his brother went like he was making sure he was actually gone.
You were still staring at the same spot too.
Jason sighed quietly beside you.
“Relax.”
You turned to him slowly.
“Relax?”
“Yes.”
“Jason—”
“You’re spiraling.”
“I am not spiraling.”
“You are absolutely spiraling.”
You shut your book and shoved it into your bag, standing up quickly.
Jason blinked up at you.
“Where are you going.”
“Home.”
Jason stood up too.
“Okay.”
“Immediately.”
Jason walked beside you as you headed down the path toward the parking lot, your pace much faster now.
Jason unlocked his car as you reached it.
You climbed into the passenger seat immediately.
Jason got in on the other side, closing the door and glancing over at you.
You were staring straight ahead like your life was flashing before your eyes.
Jason started the car, “He’s not going to tell Bruce.”
“So you’ve said.”
Jason pulled out of the parking lot slowly.
“Y/N, Dick loves chaos.”
“That’s not helping me feel better, TODD!”
Jason glanced over at you.
“You’re fine.”
“I’m not fine.”
“You’re completely fine.”
Your hands were clasped tightly in your lap.
“Jason.”
“Yeah.”
“What if Bruce fires me.”
Jason immediately looked over again.
“He’s not going to fire you.”
“You don’t know that.”
“I do.”
“How.”
Jason pulled to a stop at a light and finally turned toward you fully.
“Because Bruce trusts you more than anyone in that building.”
Your shoulders dropped slightly.
“But—”
“Even if Dick says something—which he won’t—Bruce isn’t going to care.”
You leaned your head back against the seat.
“You don’t know that.”
Jason reached over with one hand.
Without even looking.
His hand settled gently on your knee.
Warm.
Steady.
You went quiet immediately.
Jason squeezed lightly.
“You’re okay.”
You looked over at him.
He wasn’t even looking at you. He was just watching the road like it was the most normal thing in the world.
“You say that very confidently.”
“Because it’s true.”
You watched him for a second.
Jason glanced over and noticed.
“What.”
“…Nothing.”
“You’re thinking again.”
“I’m always thinking.”
Jason hummed softly.
Then his thumb brushed lightly against your knee.
A small grounding movement.
“You trust me?” he asked.
You hesitated.
Jason glanced over again, one eyebrow raised.
“We’ll see,” you said.
Jason laughed quietly.
“Fair.”
Your shoulders had relaxed a little now.
The panic wasn’t buzzing in your chest the same way.
Jason noticed.
“You breathing normally again?”
“Barely.”
“Progress.”
You rolled your eyes slightly but leaned your head against the window.
After a minute you said quietly, “…Your brother is very annoying.”
Jason smirked.
“You have no idea.”
You glanced at him again.
“You weren’t embarrassed?”
Jason looked genuinely confused.
“About what.”
“About him seeing us.”
Jason’s hand squeezed your knee again.
“Why would I be embarrassed.”
Your stomach did a little flip.
You looked away quickly.
“…Just wondering.”
Jason smiled slightly to himself and kept driving.
He pulled up in front of your building just as the sky was starting to soften into evening.
You unbuckled your seatbelt a little too quickly.
“Thanks for the ride,” you said, already reaching for the door.
Jason glanced over at you.
“You’re still thinking about it.”
“I’m not.”
“You are.”
You pushed the door open.
“I’m going inside.”
Jason sighed and shut the car off.
“Yeah,” he said, stepping out too. “I figured.”
You paused halfway up the steps.
“…You don’t have to come in.”
Jason shut the car door and walked around to you.
“I know.”
Then he followed you anyway.
You didn’t argue.
Your brain was already too loud.
Inside your apartment you dropped your bag on the kitchen island and kicked your shoes off.
Jason leaned against the counter, watching you quietly.
You rubbed your face with both hands.
“I’m just going to—” You gestured vaguely toward the hallway, “Bathroom.”
Jason nodded once.
“Okay.”
You walked down the hallway quickly and shut the bathroom door behind you.
The second it clicked shut your composure cracked.
You leaned against the sink and stared at yourself in the mirror.
Your brain immediately started running through every possible disaster scenario.
Dick tells Bruce.
Bruce looks disappointed.
Bruce thinks you’re unprofessional.
Bruce FIRES you.
Your entire career explodes because you decided kissing Jason Todd in a park was a good idea.
Your chest tightened.
“Oh my god,” you whispered to yourself.
You pressed your palms against the counter, trying to breathe normally.
It wasn’t working.
Your eyes started stinging.
“Stop,” you muttered quietly.
But the thoughts kept stacking on top of each other like a really terrible domino chain.
Your throat tightened.
You blinked hard.
Then, a soft knock in the door, “Hey.”
Jason’s voice.
You didn’t answer right away.
Another knock.
“Y/N?”
You swallowed.
“…Yeah.”
“You okay?”
You wiped quickly at your eyes.
“Yes.”
Jason was quiet for a second, “That sounded like a lie.”
You exhaled slowly.
Your hand hovered over the doorknob for a moment before you finally unlocked it and opened the door.
Jason was standing there in the hallway.
The second he saw your face his expression changed.
The teasing disappeared immediately.
“Oh,” he said softly.
You looked away.
“I’m being stupid.”
Jason stepped closer.
“No you’re not.”
“Yes I am.”
“You’re not.”
You rubbed your eyes again, frustrated with yourself.
“I just—”
Your voice cracked slightly and you stopped.
Jason’s expression softened even more.
“Hey,” he said quietly.
His hand came up gently to your arm.
“Look at me.”
You hesitated.
Then looked up.
Jason studied your face for a second, clearly piecing things together.
You sighed shakily and tears fell.
“I’m going to lose my job.”
Jason shook his head immediately.
“No you’re not.”
“You don’t know that.”
“I do.”
You leaned back against the wall slightly.
Jason stepped closer again.
“Come here.”
You frowned.
“Jason—”
“Come on.”
He gently took your hand and tugged you out of the bathroom.
You followed reluctantly as he led you down the hallway toward your bedroom.
Once inside he guided you to sit on the edge of the bed.
Jason kneeled in front of you.
Not overwhelming.
Just there.
“Breathe,” he said quietly.
“I am breathing.”
“Badly.”
You huffed a weak laugh through your nose.
Jason rested his hands lightly on your knees.
Grounding again.
“You’re not getting fired.”
“You keep saying that.”
“Because it’s true.”
You looked down at your hands.
Jason’s voice softened.
“Bruce respects you.”
You didn’t answer.
“And Dick?” Jason continued, “He’s.. physically incapable of keeping a straight face long enough to ruin someone’s life.”
That pulled a small laugh out of you despite yourself that Jason noticed immediately.
“There it is.”
You wiped at your eyes again.
“I hate that you’re right.”
“I’m right a lot.”
You rolled your eyes slightly.
Jason stood up and sat beside you on the bed instead.
After a moment he gently pulled you toward him.
You didn’t fight it.
Your head ended up against his shoulder.
Jason wrapped an arm around you.
Quiet.
Steady.
His hand rubbed slowly along your arm.
“You’re okay,” he murmured.
You let out a long breath.
Jason tilted his head slightly so it rested against yours.
“I’ve got you,” he said softly.
And somehow that helped more than anything else.
