Fandom has such unresolved mommy/daddy issues about authors. If you apply a little reading comprehension skills to my original post you’ll see I didn’t say anything at all about the author. You guys always make “interpretation” about your beef with the author. You’re all obsessed with the author. This post is just about deciphering what is there in canon. Figuring out what is being communicated by the canon itself with all the words and images and basic formal elements that are there in canon. That’s all it’s about. It really doesn’t matter if the author intentionally put all those things there in a pattern that might support the idea that this one character’s queer. That’s not what this is about. What matters is if you can compellingly argue there’s a pattern of evidence there. Or not. Everyone is conspiring together to make me go insane still adding shit about authorial intent on my post.

People have lost the ability to keep two different lines of thought in their head about something. And so their own ideas and preferences that they use for headcanon and fanfics seep into their view of canon and they will proceed to try and analyze the canon based on those.

They will critique the rest of the decor for not matching the yellow curtains.

And it makes existing on the internet in fandom spaces so annoying. Because it's how you get stuff like the Byers thing with Stranger Things.

Y'all need to take a page out of how comics operate and accept that fandom is a multiverse where every iteration is true and you have to keep them separate in your head in order for them to make sense.

“Shane wouldn’t be comfortable around visibly queer people” you guys… I mean yea we can say this as a like jokey headcanon or whatever or we could look at the text and see that when Shane does in fact meet a visibly queer person, he notes this man is explicitly visibly queer in his presentation, notes that he used to think he couldn’t be gay because he wasn’t anything like that — and feels immediately ashamed of himself for his initial reaction of discomfort and wariness, and then proceeds to be dazzled by this man for the rest of the night, noting over and over how confident and elegant and stunning he is as a visibly queer man. Like joke all you want but I think Shane realizing being visibly gay is not a bad thing is like actually beautiful and a worthwhile part of his development

and i Do think a lot of flanderization/woobification of both shane and ilya comes from people having a limited understanding of what professional athletes are Like and what goes into pursuing and maintaining a career. this goes doubly for shane and ilya, who are the elite of the elite. that does not happen without immense amounts of intentionality, dedication, discipline, and love for the sport
