So there’s this huge dudebro in my class, who, yesterday, sat next to me. And I’m sitting there sweating because like… I’m wearing my shirt with the lesbian flag on it, and he’s the most popular jock in school, and always has this look on his face that say ‘I can and will kill you’. He looks me up and down, stares at me for a minute and then goes, “So. Girls in skirts and long socks, am I right?”

To which I nodded solemnly, both out of agreement, surprise and also a healthy amount of awkward fear. He nodded and went, “You get it.”

something about brand new home that i don't see a lot of people talking about is how they deal with humanity. a large part of the story is about peter and how he thinks he's a monster. how damage control sees jean and her sister as objects, weapons to be studied and then sacrificed for "the greater good". how bruce is treated post hulk crash out even though it wasn't his fault, but the hulk is an inhuman monster so of COURSE he's in a psych ward. it tells you that we can have these notions about who is human and who is not; about what is human and what is not. but ultimately, we cannot deny someone's humanity. and it's not the biggest part of the movie, but banner's words about "what's the good and what's the bad" really ties into the whole thing about who's human and who's not.

and if i told you that spiderman: brand new day epitomises the core of all spiderman stories, which is: it's about love. the core of every spidey who wears the mask and every story that they tell is about love. peter's love for his friends, his family, even the community of other vigilantes in every version, especially mcu spidey, who is so absolutely defined by his seemingly endless capacity for love. The spiderverse crew and their love for all of the other spideys. Even every spidey's love for new york and finally, finally new york's love for him shining back at the end of brand new day.

i've been wondering for a while what made me keep coming back to spidey, in every incarnation, why i really enjoyed the massive crossover in no way home even though i'm generally not a fan of those crossovers and it finally hit me - because spiderman stories, at their core, are all stories about love.
