Bad journalism during a mass hysteria that meant facts got twisted for clickbait. Some of the people doing it were acting threatening or holding knives to be “funny” but only a tiny few actually engaged in kind of actual violence, and none of them killed anybody.

At the end of the day it was just a fad that freaked people out and invited a panicked frenzy of “clown hunters” and true crime brainrot. For every 16 year old in a clown mask running around the woods for attention there were probably hundreds of 16 year olds not in clown masks doing actual violent crimes, but that just isn’t clickbaity enough to make the news.
