I don’t like the whumping action on its own, if it’s relevant and there’s aftercare that’s where you’ll find me. You won’t find much Whumper content here, mostly environmental whump if anything. I like my characters hurt but don’t care much for those who do the hurting. Trusting someone to take care of you when you’re struggling? being comfortable around someone enough to be vulnerable? that’s what i’m here forrrrr

whumpee whose immune system is absolutely shot to pieces after being under so much stress for so long. they're not in danger anymore. they're recovered (mostly). but they're sick all the time.

a simple cold goes around the neighbourhood, and whumpee is out for weeks. a stomach bug sends them to hospital because they're throwing up so much. they catch everything and it hits them ten times harder, and god do they just want to rest.

as much as I love badass characters pushing through pain to fight, I also love when they hit a point where they just can't. something structural is wrong or broken, so they can't stand. their muscles are simply too weak and overworked to hold them up. their bloody hands slip off the handles of their weapons, they can't aim through their vertigo or tunneling vision, they shake from blood loss or exhaustion even if not from fear. they've just reached their limit, and no amount of willpower will change that!

Whumpee who's been kept in low/no sensory imput for days, weeks even. Who's wildly overwhelmed when they get rescued <3

Ya know the thing characters do before they come to consciousness? That perfect lil thing where they do that wince, and their eyes which are closed squeeze shut even tighter as their brows forrow, then they slowly open their eyes, blinking against the too-bright light, especially coupled with a soft little noise of distress… just such good shit 👌

And of course it can be followed by…

- A low moan of pain when they register it fully.

- A hand immediately going to their wound, and encountering bandages. When did that happen?

- Bleary eyes roaming about, trying to figure out where they are and how they got there.

- Jolting up, thinking they’re back in the danger or forgetting they’re injured, only to cry out in pain.

- Trying to sit up, but their arms too weak/shaky to support them and they fall back again.

- Either of the above, but before they can get that far they are stopped by hands on their shoulders and gently but firmly pressed back down.

I just realized I have kind of a thing for writing a whumpee as being so out of it that they have difficulty perceiving the world through anything but touch. So their vision is blurry or they’re kept in a dark room or their eyes are covered, and they can hear but they’re half-conscious and in too much pain and/or too doped up to actually make sense of the words that are reaching them. Instead, the focus is on what they can feel: the needle going into their skin, the medical equipment they’re hooked up to, the caretaker’s hands patching them up, a blanket being tucked around them, and maybe, just maybe, a pair of warm arms wrapped around their aching body.

Wait, so it’s not just me…?! I love a good in-the-moment description of physical aftermath, I could read them over and over again or think about them for way too long. When a character is in so much pain / so exhausted / clinging so tenuously to consciousness that they have no concept of time beyond the present moment and their awareness consists solely of physical sensations, muted sounds, maybe a bit of blurred colors. When they can’t do and can’t think, they can only feel and breathe, and that fills their whole universe. (Maybe because usually my brain just can’t resist anxiously running all over the place all the time, so it takes something drastic to get it to hold still…?)

love it when a character is like,, well on the way to recovery from whatever illness/injury/etc. has just been ailing them, but then they still have moments of weakness/vulnerability that necessitate caretaking from the people around them—like a reminder that, although healing, they aren’t quite at 100% just yet

Since some of you don't seem to understand how this 'new notes' thing works, I'll break it down:

I'm the OP. I'm making this post. If you like, comment, reblog (without comment) on this post, then I'm the one who will see all those notes in my activity page.

However...

If you reblog (with comment), I will get a notification that you did that, but any likes/comments/reblogs (without comment) you get on that reblog will only be shown to you. As OP I won't see them.

If someone adds a reblog (with comment) to your reblog...as OP I won't see that. I won't see any of those notes in my activity page.

Basically, if someone with a large following makes a comment, then they will get all the notes and OP will see nothing. If OP has said something silly because they're, y'know, 21 and it happens, and then someone reblogs it onto the dash of someone with a large following who then dunks on them for fun? OP doesn't see it, doesn't get notes for it, but they're gonna get the harrassment for it in their inbox.

If I, someone with a 5 digit follower count, reblog something to correct misinformation on Ancient Egypt, then OP will never see it unless it was on the original post, but I will continue to get notes on that post even though it's not my post. If I reblog fanart, or just art in general, with a comment like 'Oh this is so lovely!' then OP will not see any of the notes from people reblogging it from me. They'll only see my reblog. So it's possible for an art post by someone else to have 200 notes for them, but 9000 for someone who reblogs it with a comment, and the OP artist will have no idea it's been seen by that many people.

It's killing blow to the community we've built here, by someone higher up who doesn't understand that being able to see all the comments and reblogs is what makes this site the place I keep coming back to.

let your whumpees have lasting cognitive damage!

I feel like most of whump post-rescue focuses on the physical scars and specifically psychological trauma (which are very important to explore as well!), but cognitive damage is an underutilized topic.

Depending on the whump (beatings, isolation, oxygen deprivation, electric shocks, even magic) there can be a lot of different consequences to the brain and its functions. I'll list some examples.

Brain fog and slower processing speed.

Thinking is becoming so much more difficult and energy consuming. Before the whump, character had lightning fast reflexes, could spot patterns and connections in seconds and could adapt to any situation. Now every task takes twice as long and they feel utterly exhausted at the end of it. Maybe some more complicated tasks have simply become impossible.

Losing the ability to read and/or write.

They used to spend hours reading, writing, journaling. Now the letters have just become incoherent shapes, constantly blurring and losing meaning. One day someone asks character to write down their name and with tears in their eyes they have to discover that they're simply not able to.

Memory loss, both retrograde and anterograde.

Before the whump, character's memory was a source of pride for them. No matter if it was faces, random facts or important dates. Now all of that is lost. Familiar faces wiped and all wisdom of important topics lost (retrograde amnesia). At the same time, character is slowly realizing that retaining new information after their rescue is also not as effective as it used to be. They met someone new just yesterday, how is it possible that they can't remember their name or anything of their conversation (anterograde amnesia)?

Previous abilities disappearing.

Different brain areas are important for different talents. Maybe character was a math genius before, had exceptional balance and body control or could compose music like no other. But during the whump, that specific part of their brain got damaged and now they are unable to do what gave their life meaning and what made them so unique.

All of those usually go along with heavy self-doubt and an identity crisis. Character will probably get frustrated at failing something that used to take no effort at all. Maybe they will lose their sense of identity as abilities that used to define them are stripped away.

But most people in real life also become more resilient and adapt to their new circumstances (often simply out of necessity). They will find creative ways to deal with the challenges in their lives and build a new sense of self.

having harsh coughing fits. caretaker getting medicine for them and rubbing their back, trying to get them through it.

panic attacks spiraling into asthma attacks.

getting dizzy and/or lightheaded from the lack of oxygen, caretaker having to keep them from falling

trying to get whumpee's fever down when they can't keep down fever reducers!! the frustration!! trying to fight between "you need these meds before that fever gets any higher" and "you're going to get dehydrated if you keep throwing them up" that's where it's at babey!!

Whumpee (A) actively being rescued by Teammate (B)

Tied up by their wrists, chained to a sitting position with their arms above their head. When B undoes their binds, they have to maneuver A to the floor without letting their arms drop too low to cause pain, they were held up for so long that it hurts to move

A is drugged, semi-aware, unable to form complete sentences, doing their best to answer B’s yes/no questions about their condition

B slowly helping A sit up, waiting for them to get their bearings after they’re hit with dizziness from low blood sugar / blood loss / exhaustion before attempting to stand

A keeps almost blacking out on the way out of the facility, needing to stop a few times and hold their head between their knees. They’re visibly shaking, pale and unbalanced

A’s been terrified for so long now that everything feels hazy and threatening. They can’t help but tense up / flinch every time B needs to hold them up, or tries to comfort them. It’s jarring for both A and B equally - A is visibly frustrated and aware they’re reacting strangely, and B is apologetic and internally freaking out that their best friend’s current state of mind is to percieve everything as a threat first and foremost

A is so scared that they end up going nonverbal. B is so focused on trying to get them both out that they don’t fully realize this until they’re outside, and are finally able to take stock of the situation outside of danger. B keeps trying to ask questions, A keeps vaguely motioning with shaking hands as best they can until they’re no longer able to do anything else except breathe and stay conscious.

When they finally make it to home base, A looks so visibly nauseous that B decides the best course of action is to wait and let them rest a bit before dealing with the damage (if it can wait). A is laid down on their side, and B sits nearby, calming down as well

A is so spent they go in and out of consciousness while B tends to their wounds. Not asleep but not really awake either

A is still so scared. But at this point they’re too exhausted and wrung out to even flinch as B wipes their face clean after having finished cleaning and bandaging their most pressing injuries. When they start to cry, it’s confused, dazed, with the only tell being breaths coming in spasms here and there.

B doesn’t understand A is crying at first and instead freaks out, believing they missed something or hurt A somehow. Then they see tears gathering and put 2 and 2 together; A is so spent that this is all they can do to honour their emotions with the little energy they have

B gripping A’s hand out of instinct, forgetting their current state of mind might override the action’s intended comfort. For the first time since the rescue, instead of flinching, A weakly squeezes back.

“It’s ok, it’s over, i’m here” “I’ve got you, you can rest” “you’re okay, deep breaths” “you can sleep, i’ll keep watch”

i’m a sucker for emotional/behavioural changes because of blood loss or drugging or fever or what have you and a fun version of that i’ve been working with lately is ‘whumpee who is an exceedingly competent, lethally dangerous fighter who is just out of it enough to be extremely risky to approach god forbid touch but with it enough to recognize a specific trusted person or a small number of trusted people.’

where caretaker is out of their depth and not really cut out for this but they’re the only one who can safely get physically close enough to help. maybe they’re on their own maybe being guided by a medic or doctor but regardless, they’re who whumpee has. they’re who whumpee recognizes, trusts. it’s got to be them who does the very direct care.

More fun ways for your whumpee to wake up

aftermath edition

Fading in and out of consciousness in caretaker/rescuer’s arms or slung over their back as they’re carried away.

Disoriented, without a clue where they are. Looking around and slowly remembering that they got away and this place is safe.

Whumpee who was kept somewhere confined and dark for so long, waking up in a high-ceilinged, sunlit room. Starting to hyperventilate as the agoraphobia hits.

After the fever breaks, with a cool cloth over their forehead and caretaker slumped asleep at the end of the bed.

Out in the open, alone and hurt and with no idea where they are. Maybe they collapsed after escaping, or maybe whumper dumped them somewhere. Now they have to figure out where to go from here, and how they can get there in their condition.

Coming back to consciousness in an ambulance, being rushed through a hospital, or any other whirlwind of emergency care. Bright lights and loud sirens, unfamiliar people rushing around them, feeling completely overwhelmed and weak from their injuries.

As their restraints are lifted off by someone with careful hands and a painfully familiar voice.

when characters are too weak or exhausted to speak… they can hear their loved ones’ hushed voices or the medical team next to them, but they just don’t have the strength to reply. turning their head towards them is nearly more effort than they can manage, but they try anyways. someone squeezes their hand, and they gather up the last of their strength to squeeze back, barely noticeable but just enough to let them know they’re still with them

Rescued Whumpee/Character stuff where they’re past the life-or-death phase and starting to recover

Sleep debt - Character who’s exhaustion catches up to them, falling asleep on car rides / watching movies / anytime they’re not actively doing anything while they recover

Lost strength - Character struggling do a lot of things they used to be able to do easily, like open sealed containers / take long walks / go up stairs

Zoning out - Character who’s not all there a lot of the time, having difficulty paying attention to conversations and consistently needing to be brought back to the present

Tremors - Character whose hands shake most of the time, everyone around them pretending they don’t see it but they do. And every time they can’t help but be reminded of before, when their hands were steady

Hunger - At first, Character seems to pick at their food, reluctant, getting sick more often than not. Later on, once they’re used to consistent meals, their appetite is back tenfold - they slowly start to branch out, they learn to cook/what they like, and eventually get back to a healthy weight

Showers - Character isn’t strong enough to properly wash themselves yet, but able to try. Caretaker starts to notice when their hair’s greasy/tangled after they shower alone, and offers to help again. When Character is stubborn, they suggest alternatives (dry shampoo, just brushing Character’s hair out, helping only on the bad days, etc).

Talking - Character who has a hard time speaking after the event. Either due to trauma, injuries that affect their speech, what have you; the most Character can do at times is hum, and when they are able to speak, it’s quiet and with a lack of confidence. Caretaker eventually learns to slow down and listen with patience

Anxiety - Formerly outgoing and adventurous Character now struggling with panic attacks, afraid to do the things they used to take for granted (grocery stores, activities, sometimes even just going outside). When they’re able to start doing these things again after months/years of work and building up to it, they finally feel free. They cry from relief and happiness the first time they come home from taking a trip to the grocery store by themself
