Can’t think of more than a couple modern-style or “prestige” TV series that justifies its runtime/production values and wouldn’t be better off as a long-run episodic series with lower costs or a two to two and a half hour drama film.

giving screenwriters 10 hours to tell just one story so often ends up with something that’s somehow simultaneously overstuffed and rushed. 8 rushed plot threads in 10 episodes is worse than 10 plot threads in 25 cheap episodes or 3 crisply defined plot threads in one movie

True Detective S1 makes it work, same for Mad Men and probably Breaking Bad (haven’t watched it)

rule of thumb, everything on HBO should be a movie, everything on Netflix or Disney+ should be a Buffy-style monster of the week with half the budget and twice the episodes, and the cable channels go 50/50
