So
Apparently, I can't be normal about Ambrosius, so here I am again. I feel that we should talk more about the injury he suffered at the climax, and I think it tends to get glazed over because they didn't show much evidences that Ambrosius had to heal from it because he didn't have a cast, unlike Sureblade who gets a final screen time wearing an arm cast.
First, I want to point out that Ballister landed on his bad side.
It clearly hurts, because we can see him favor it when he tried stopping the Director from getting into the laser machine.
His reaction here gets to me, the pursing of his lips. Maybe it's an emotional lip pursing, and his sympathizing with Ballister's grief. Slowly though, I think Ballister does lose consciousness, making him more of a dead weight.
Again, to the spot Ambrosius was injured. Speaking as someone who just got hit by a motorcycle (and still managed to literally walk away from it), the man's clearly doing his best to toughen it out.
So, the pursing of his lips may also be a silent wince he's hoping wouldn't get out. Ambrosius did cut off Ballister's arm, for him, taking the pain of Ballister leaning heavily on his injured side should be nothing. Maybe part of him thought it was a lesser pain than what he gave Ballister. (PS. Not that it should, mind you.)
Regardless, I want to focus on how much Ambrosius definitely loved and missed this man. They're both in pain, they're both hurting, but they're together again.
Remembering the words of Augustus Waters from the Fault of our Stars and Hazel Lancaster.
"That's the thing about pain, it demands to be felt." -A.W.
"You don't get to choose if you get hurt in this world. But you do have SOME say in who hurts you." -H.L.
Ambrosius knows he would rather suffer with Ballister than live a life free of pain without him. He didn't know what's going to happen between him and Ballister after this, if they would be "together-together" again, if Ballister would actually forgive him. But I'd like to think he knew one thing:
This time, he was going to be there for Ballister in this painful time, in whatever way Ballister would accept him.
All of this, yes, 10/10, but may I add:
Ambrosius doesn’t truly know what happened before Nimona took out the cannon. The giant screens weren’t visible from the wall. He also doesn’t know what happened to Ballister between when he said he loved him and the climax. But he loves Ballister so much, so when he sees him on the ground he just goes to him, injured or not, broken up or not. They haven’t talked! He doesn’t know how Ballister feels about him at the moment!
He just knows that Ballister has lost someone he loved, and he doesn’t care about how much his own shoulder hurts if it’s able to hold Ballister up.
And Ballister? After everything, he sees Ambrosius kneel down next to him and he just drops his whole weight against him. He practically crumbles. It’s one of the most heart-wrenching five seconds in any film ever just because of how nothing has truly changed between them, even when they’re surrounded by uncertainty and destruction and have no idea what the future will look like. They’ve been through hell, but what matters is the same as what mattered at the beginning: they’re together, and they find support and comfort in each other’s presence. Ballister doesn’t even think before he leans against Ambrosius, and Ambrosius doesn’t hesitate to hold him closer (his hand comes up to the back of Ballister’s neck almost immediately). Their relationship becomes so much deeper because of that small moment in the chaos, because we get to see a glimpse of the inherent trust they have for each other.
These two are so incredibly important to me and I’m so glad this movie exists.
Thank you for this addition, I didn't realize. You make very good points as well. What I love about this is that they started this movie with an established couple.
Most Animated movies (I know) don't really do that. Oh, they may give an idea of the end game pair but they never really start with an established pair.
That's one of the great things about Nimona. It showed how if you're already with the right person, against all odds, the right person will stay your right person.
Exactly!!!! And them being in an explicitly romantic relationship from the beginning is actually so incredibly important to the story! It drives the conflict between Ballister and Nimona! It drives the conflict between Ambrosius and the Institute/Director! If they hadn’t been together at the beginning of the movie, there’s no telling what Ballister or Ambrosius would’ve thought after the ceremony. Ballister probably wouldn’t have the same unwavering trust that Ambrosius could make everything okay (!!!!!!!!), and maybe Ambrosius wouldn’t have hesitated so much when ordered to arrest him!
And you are so correct about that last bit. They love each other. They want to make it work, and we see that they’re willing and able to change!
This is why I want a sequel with a marriage proposal hijinks and shenanigans subplot
You know that bit in Frozen 2 where Kristoff kept trying to propose and it comes out cringey? Like... For comedy?
Well, I bet if that does happen, (and if not I'll just write about it, lol, who's going to stop me right 🤣) Ambrosius and Ballister would take turns through out the sequel trying to propose and Nimona and, say, maybe the Squire, makes bets on who actually gets to do one successful proposal.
Cause, let's say, whenever they set things up to propose, the mood is right, things go according to plan, and just as they start building up to pop the question, something comes up to interrupt it like work or the evil villain of the sequel 🤣🤣
Let's face it, these two have known each other so long, they have a pretty good idea and many options on how they can propose meaningfully.
Then we finally get the proposal, and it's impromptu and unrehearsed like Pirates of the Carribean 3, like...
Ambrosius: BAL, WILL YOU FUCKING MARRY ME?! *during a sword fight with a minion*
Ballister, surprised but aware enough to headbutt a good and flip them over: Really?! We're doing this now?!
Nimona: PRETTY MUCH LOOKING LIKE THE END OF THE WORLD, BOSS! MIGHT BE YOUR ONLY CHANCE! ALSO, AHA! I WON THE BET WITH THE SQUIRE!
Ballister: WAIT, you made a bet?!
Ambrosius: BAL!
Ballister: OH FUCK SAKE'S, OF COURSE I WOULD MARRY YOU! BUT CAN WE ALL NOT DIE FIRST!
Nimona, opening a cage of hostages: Aha! Found the minister!
🤣🤣🤣 Sorry, my hands slipped.
this is PERFECT. I am still utterly certain that Ballister would come up with a romantic plan and then Ambrosius would ruin it by proposing casually in the middle of a normal conversation
if it was in the middle of a fight scene there could be a comedic pause in the fighting for the villain to say something silly like “aww congratulations BUT IS NOW REALLY THE TIME??”
Oooor....
"Aw, how romantic" but condescending-like "I would love to find you the perfect venue.... IN HELL! DIE, HEATHENS!" and let's say sequel villain is very homophobe-coded 🔥
Then the villain dies, time skip to the actual wedding, and Nimona takes turns running them both up and down the aisle, also being their flower girl and ring bearer.
My Gloreth, are we writing fanfic ahahahaha
So crazy but I'm having too much fun
