Not just that, but literally IMMEDIATELY after almost getting killed by Luke he goes and kills all of the other jedi-in-training who won’t follow him. His first action after almost being killed, because Luke thought he was going to be evil, was murdering people.

the Jedi should NOT have been generals
listen. listen. this isn’t an argument about whether or not the jedi should have agreed to fight in the clone wars. we’ll burn that can of worms when we get there.
GIVEN that the Jedi DO participate in the clone wars, they should not have been Generals. They were COMPLETELY unsuited to the position. They did NOT have tactical training, much less battlefield tactics with large groups of people. They did not know how to fight in teams larger than like, 3, and DEFINITELY not trained to fight alongside non-jedi, even stunningly competent superhuman non-jedi (like the clones). They were completely unfamiliar with the clones as a concept, much less what the clones were trained in, how they fought, their tactics, battle formations, codewords on the battlefield, everything like that. Like, if a Jedi wants a bunch of clones to go achieve an objective, how do they articulate to the clones what formation they want them in? How do they know what formations the clones normally use? How would they even know what formations are GOOD IDEA to use???
And the Jedi were trained to use violence as a last resort to resolve a situation, they were not trained to deal with situations where violence is part of the premise, at least not on a massive scale.
The Jedi should have left the General-ing to those who were ACTUALLY TRAINED FOR IT- i.e. the command clones. Those who actually had experience commanding and working with the troops under them.
We see SO MANY TIMES where various Jedi just like, launch themselves into battle As Fast And Chaotically as Possible, and their entire orders for their troops are just like “try to keep up and also shoot stuff”. And clones try to keep up with Jedi yeeting themselves off of high surfaces into the literal middle of hundreds of droids. And the clones die.
ANYWAY, what the Jedi should have been, was like, special consultants, or Super Commandos. A jedi’s force-sense, especially the “bad feelings” vibe, is valuable! But the jedi doesn’t have to be the one in charge for that to be useful. And, quite frankly, the “bad feelings” vibe often doesn’t make much of a difference (that we see, anyway), and/or a non-force sensitive with a modicum of war-related education could look at the situation and go “yep, bad vibes” too. Where the skills/abilities of a Jedi are UNIQUELY valuable and absolutely irreplaceable, is on the front lines. A single Jedi can protect an an entire platoon of clones from blaster fire. They’re mobile cover, cover that doesn’t block the clones’ shots, and can sense random dangerous surprises before they crop up! A Jedi can take out tens of extremely dangerous droids (SBDs, droidekas, commandos), with ease in a matter of seconds, and STILL block blaster fire from the clones with them. They can catch a falling clone and get them to safety. They can protect the squad from falling debris. They can redirect incoming artillery fire. They can smash enemy vehicles and cut directly into enemy tanks. Seriously Jedi are so valuable in a battle. But like, it’s kinda hard to lead a battle when you’re getting shot at and protecting your buddies and all that. Yeah it’s cool to have a general lead from the front lines but it’s kinda hard to get a tactical sense of the whole scenario when you’re in the thick of things like that. Jedi aren’t omniscient, and if they’re up front, where they can easily triple their troops’ effectiveness, they’re not going to be in a good position to lead the whole battle.
And of course, Jedi excel at special missions- the standard “sneak in here, get this info” or “blow up this one base” or whatever. That’s what Jedi do anyway! But SURPRISE it’s also really hard to lead your battalion when you’re constantly getting called away for random shit like “we need you to fake your death and impersonate a bounty hunter for a bit” or “someone stole a holocron, go get that back please” or “insert random jedi bullshit here”. But if the Jedi were just Battlefield Super Commandos/Spec Ops guys, their intermittent absences wouldn’t cause huge hiccups in command.
So yeah anyway the Clone Commanders should have been in charge because they’d make better generals than the jedi and the jedi should have just focused on filling roles where they’d be the most useful instead of trying to do both of those things and therefore being slightly worse at both as a result.

Having no military training is one thing, can you imagine how the actual Republic military officers must HATED the Jedi for being airborne GENERALS? A rank many hard working officers won’t even dare to dream of without either 1) having connections 2) actually being very good at their job.
Military is a closed environment with tight hierarchy and the Republic military was pretty rotten with bribes and nepotism. I can guarantee the Jedi are hated by the Republic military, who has real political power in the Republic while the clone soldiers, commanders or not, are nothing but tools for the war affair and have no right nor influence outside of front lines. I bet it’s also a delicate trap set by Palpatine. He knew the military will laugh/feel relieved when Order 66 was executed and the Jedi “outsiders” were removed from the military power structure.
Oh, and they let FUCKING 14 YEARS OLD KIDS WITH NO MILITARY TRAINING OR WHATSOEVER AS FUCKING COMMANDERS. COMMANDERS! When actual young adults graduated from the military academy get the rank of ensign!
The Republic military definitely hated the Jedi to guts. Not to mention how wrong it is to let 14 years old kids as military commanders. But they have no problem using mass produced 10 years old kids as canon fodders so I guess that won’t be a major problem for the Republic.

remember that battle above ryloth (i think it was ryloth) where Ahsoka rashly disobeyed anakin’s order to pull back because she thought she had a shot and she got literally all of her men killed? and now i guess she knows better but FUCK imagine trying to learn how to lead and ALL of your teaching moments are like THAT. Every opportunity to learn comes at the cost of men’s lives. That’s just so fucking unfair to the clones AND to ahsoka
Imagine aliens threaten Earth and the coalition of Earth governments points at the Shaolin Monastery and says “you’re in charge of all our armies, now.” Why? Well, everyone knows Shaolin Monks are badass fighters, right? Who better to be put in charge than a bunch of kung fu masters? Yeah, that would totally work.
Add exactly all of this to Palpatine’s list of reasons why he arranged for the Jedi to be generals. To push them out of their depths. To put them into situations that compromise their ethics and their mandates. To push public opinion- and that damn well includes the military opinion- in the direction Palpatine wants, namely ‘yeah Order 66 was totes justified, look at all this ridiculous rule-bending for the Jedi and their sub-par leadership’. And to impair the GAR’s effectiveness just enough to keep the military situation between the Republic and the CIS at roughly a stalemate. Palpatine absolutely did this on purpose.
The Heralds of Valdemar series features the titular Heralds, who are the best parallel to the Jedi Order done right that I’ve ever seen, actually touches on this. Heralds have psychic powers, have specialized training to use said powers, and are trained to act as- well, basically the Jedi. Troubleshooters, negotiators, spies, organizers, diplomats, even military leaders in a pinch. Emphasis on ‘in a pinch’. Their training makes them very flexible and very effective in situations that can be dealt with by one or two people. They tend to operate in the field singly or in pairs, and they do get training in how to train locals to fight so they can hold off something nasty until the regular army gets there, and they get training in how to lead locals in a pinch, because out in the hinterlands of Valdemar, they may be the only ones with military training. But they’re there just to hold things together until the army can arrive. In war, they work with the army, they don’t lead it. They function as a mix of light cavalry, mounted archers, messengers, scouts, spies, and communications, and they bring their psychic powers into play. Some can set things on fire at a distance, some can spy at a distance or watch through animal eyes, some can move things with their minds, some are telepathic. Heralds with Mindspeech get placed with key officers to relay orders and coordinate attacks- the Valdemaran forces’ ability to communicate literally at the speed of thought and coordinate nearly as fast is one of their key strengths.
This is exactly the sort of shit the Jedi should have been doing, and for exactly these reasons.
I agree so much with this and it’s a stellar example of what a bad faith/corrupt government they were working with. Like, we can see the Jedi do adjust as best they can–Anakin tells the clones to “fly in formation” when they go into that one nebula he heard about on Tatooine, showing that they’re trying their best to keep clone tactics in mind. But in that same episode/arc, Ahsoka has to point that the clones just cannot keep up with him, that he can fly the way the situation demands, but the clones are dropping off or getting blown up because they’re not the phenomenal pilot that he is. You know it has to be similar for other clones when the Jedi just go literally flying off because the Force is pulling them in a different direction. Yet wasn’t it Commander Grey who argued in favor of the Jedi being Generals in the war, when Depa expressed that she thought it was a mistake to take titles? His argument was that there would have been chaos without that chain of command, that a lot of people would have gotten killed for it–from someone who was trained to be a commander, he saw them as necessary. Star Wars has always had young people going to war–Leia was 16 when she joined the Rebellion and started going on missions, Padme was 14 when she was a ruler of her planet that was basically put in charge of leading a war and the responsibility of sending many Gungans to their likely deaths and she was clearly trained for combat well before this, Leia’s Resistance has 14 year old recruits that are also sent on missions, etc. Ahsoka was 14 when she went into battle and it was a steep learning curve that cost real people their lives and that was a hell of a weight to grapple with. So, I think there’s a lot of in-universe narrative approval for how young people going into battle isn’t inherently bad and that this galaxy sees them as rising to the occasion, even if we are horrified out of universe about their ages, but I also absolutely agree that this shouldn’t have been the position for them. Because it does lead straight to the idea that the Jedi are in charge of the war, it causes a clash of how the Jedi have trained all their lives to fight based on using the Force, and they do their best to adapt to more “grounded” soldiers’ style, but there really should have been more separation between them. I’d love to know if they got a choice in this–George Lucas described them as being “drafted” into the war, so the idea seems to be that they didn’t really have a choice, unless they wanted to go full scorched earth policy re: being part of the Republic that allows them to help people/fight back against the shit the Separatists were doing, but could they have refused the titles of Generals and Commanders? Depa seems to think they could have argued it, but would Palpatine have forced them into it, because he knew that would lead to the galaxy sitting by and letting the Jedi genocide happen, given that they were blamed for starting and perpetuating the war? We certainly see with how hard Shaak Ti tries to get Fives to safety under Jedi protection, but cannot do it because the Republic is railroading right over her, would the same have happened to force the Jedi into being Generals? Ultimately, I think it’s pretty clear the Jedi should not have been generals and it’s horrifying that they had to try to fill this role that never should have been theirs, because one evil fucker wanted them all dead and to have all the power for himself.
