so i realize it's january 2024 and this show ended 800 years ago but. who else up wondering if shiv liked the nickname shiv when her family first started calling her it. when she was a kid. if she knew her name meant makeshift weapon used to maim or kill. did she always know because they joked about it. did she learn its meaning and be not sure. did she eventually grow to accept it. did she grow to mold herself around her sharp edges because that's her identity it is literally her name. shiv. idk

One of Succession’s running themes has always been that the past is made up. You can’t go back to fact check it and everyone is an unreliable narrator when it comes to memory. In the same sense, the creatives behind this show have always given the actors a lot of freedom in how to play scenes and change them.

And I honestly respect the hell out of Jesse Armstrong, the writers and everyone else that, when asked about their take on the show, they will always say things like “I think” “In my opinion” “Personally”. Like, the literal creator of the text recognizing that there is no definitive take is so fucking cool to me. It is perfectly in line with the show’s philosophy as well.

Discussing Succession is truly like sitting in a very smart english lit class, where everyone’s opinion is well supported by the text. Everything is valid, nothing is 100% right but you can see how they got there.

For example, James Cromwell will think there is a certain hope for betterment by the end of the finale, Mark Mylod thinks it’s profoundly tragic, Jesse Armstrong thinks change isn’t possible, the next person will point at moments during the story where that exact thing is disproven– there is no right answer.

at the end of the day. kendall roman and shiv are so codependent there's no universe where they arent intertwined they will be fighting and laughing and making meals fit for kings and crying and betraying each other and protecting each other and finding their way back to each other over and over and over again

thinking about the tragedy of kendall again. about being groomed for a job for so long you forget that you’re allowed to do something else. ‘by god i hope it’s in me’ it already is ken. it’s been in you since you were born. you’re not a son anymore than you are a vessel for logan to live through long after he dies. the horror of it all. of logan giving kendall the job and then taking it away. of logan offering to buy kendall out and then telling him he wants to keep him close. of logan typing out and printing his name in ink on paper. of logan crossing out his name halfheartedly in pencil. the number one boy. a puppet. so convinced of your birth right that you forget why you tried to turn it down. waystar might be a cage to roman and an impenetrable fortress for shiv but it’s kendall’s childhood home. haunted, hollow, a game his dad plays with him, an angry man always just around the corner. he has to stay, he doesn’t know anything else, where else could he even go? it’s always been his, sort of, not really but in the end, when the game is done and logan is cold and dead in the ground, he has to, needs to take it. needs to win one last time, for real this time. hasn’t he done enough?
