advice for developing character designers
There’s truly no wrong way to design characters or creatures that appeal to you, but some people definitely still have a lot of trouble hatching ideas that feel “original enough” to them, and there’s really a very simple formula I feel like I don’t see discussed all that often.
Think about characters you love in other, popular works, and chances are the vast majority of them can be basically summarized in just two or three words.
Undyne Undertale is a fish warrior woman, and that’s basically it. She feels more distinct than that because she has a cool snaggly-toothed design and a fun punkass personality, not to mention the eye patch, but none of those things break up her theme as a humanoid fish monster who knows how to fight. They all fall right within the umbrella formed by those three simple words.
This even applies to a design as notoriously complicated as most Digimon. Wargreymon here is a pain in the ass to draw and covered in all sorts of bits and bobs, but you can still sum him up with only the phrase “cyborg dinosaur man.” The wings are intentionally beetle-like, so there is another subtle theme thrown in, but it still doesn’t change that this is a humanoid dinosaur with mechanical armor. Cyborg dinosaur man. That’s all!
Marcel the shell is a snail shell with an eye and shoes, and you probably forgot when Marcel was a viral youtube thing, but he was, and he got a book deal out of it.
Humanoid turtle ninjas.
Child-haunted armor.
Funny skeleton musician
I know this is a “no duh!” thing to a lot of people reading this but this is genuinely something I still see other people struggling with: “simple” doesn’t mean “less creative,” but is in fact the very best way to make up an idea that has more lasting, more memorable appeal both to the audience and to yourself! Think of just one thing you like, add even just one other trait to it, and you’ve done it! You made a character! It doesn’t even have to be a particularly new, unexpected or rare combination of traits to be valid; there’s lots of other cyborg dinosaurs and funny skeletons out there, and there’s still room for as many more as people want to come up with. This IS all just about the “physical” or “species” aspects of character design, obviously; who your character is, what kind of world they inhabit and how they interact with others will all distinguish them further, and you can pretty much go nuts with those. It’s the aesthetic and basic concept that will draw people in first, and the rest can be as complex as you feel it needs to be.

The first thing I thought of was a croissant wizard xD
Hell yeah!!! That could mean a wizard with croissant powers, a wizard who IS a croissant, or even both!
in 1994 when green day first became famous, they invited pansy division, an openly gay punk band, to open for them for the entire dookie tour knowing full well the responses would be mixed. in 2016/2017, on their revolution radio tour, green day chose only female led punk bands to open for them to help create recognition for these artists in a male dominated scene. this band has always been using their voices for the right reasons and i love them so much for that.
And Against Me! Is opening for them too! A band fronted by a trans woman! Fuck yeah Green Day
If I’m not mistaken, there was a prom somewhere that was cancelled one time because a lesbian couple wanted to go, so Green Day rented a venue and had a prom for them. Not sure about accuracy, my mom told me about that
yes this is true as well!! green day helped to fund and organize this second prom when the first one was cancelled. the second prom was actually open not only to the students of the school, but also to any other lgbtq+ students as well as supporters in the state of mississippi who wanted to attend as well!!
Billy Joe Armstrong once literally leapt into the crowd at Green Day show and drop-kicked a guy who wouldn’t leave a girl alone.
This exemplifies how do to representation right. Being a straight ally doesn’t mean creating things for LGBT+ people. Its about giving those who are already creating a better stage.
He’s not a “straight ally” he’s bisexual.

Hey ! I made RPG class buttons !

Do not punish the behaviour you want to see
I mean, it seems pretty obvious when you put it like that, right?
But how many families, when an introvert sibling or child makes an effort to socialize, snarkily say, “So, you’ve decided to join us”?
Or when someone does something they’ve had trouble doing, say, “Why can’t you do that all the time?” (Happened to me, too often.)
Or any sentence containing the word “finally”.
If someone makes a step, a small step, in a direction you want to encourage, encourage it. Don’t complain about how it’s not enough. Don’t bring up previous stuff. Encourage it.
Because I swear to fucking god there is nothing more soul-killing, more motivation-crushing, than struggling to succeed and finding out that success and failure are both punished.
old people really need to learn how to text accurately to the mood they’re trying to represent like my boss texted me wondering when my semester is over so she can start scheduling me more hours and i was like my finals are done the 15th! And she texts back “Yay for you….” how the fuck am i supposed to interpret that besides passive aggressive
Someone needs to do a linguistic study on people over 50 and how they use the ellipsis. It’s FASCINATING. I never know the mood they’re trying to convey.
I actually thought for a long time that texting just made my mother cranky. But then I watched my sister send her a funny text, and my mother was laughing her ass off. But her actual texted response?
“Ha… right.”
Like, she had actual goddamn tears in her eyes, and that was what she considered an appropriate reply to the joke.I just marvelled for a minute like ‘what the actual hell?’ and eventually asked my mom a few questions. I didn’t want to make her feel defensive or self-conscious or anything, it just kind of blew my mind, and I wanted to know what she was thinking.
Turns out that she’s using the ellipsis the same way I would use a dash, and also to create ‘more space between words’ because it ‘just looks better to her’. Also, that I tend to perceive an ellipsis as an innate ‘downswing’, sort of like the opposite of the upswing you get when you ask a question, but she doesn’t. And that she never uses exclamation marks, because all her teachers basically drilled it into her that exclamation marks were horrible things that made you sound stupid and/or aggressive.
So whereas I might sent a response that looked something like:
“Yay! That sounds great - where are we meeting?”
My mother, whilst meaning the exact same thing, would go:
‘Yay. That sounds great… where are we meeting?”
And when I look at both of those texts, mine reads like ‘happy/approval’ to my eye, whereas my mother’s looks flat. Positive phrasing delivered in a completely flat tone of voice is almost always sarcastic when spoken aloud, so written down, it looks sarcastic or passive-aggressive.
On the reverse, my mother thinks my texts look, in her words, ‘ditzy’ and ‘loud’. She actually expressed confusion, because she knows I write and she thinks that I write well when I’m constructing prose, and she, apparently, could never understand why I ‘wrote like an airhead who never learned proper English’ in all my texts. It led to an interesting discussion on conversational text. Texting and text-based chatting are, relatively, still pretty new, and my mother’s generation by and large didn’t grow up writing things down in real-time conversations. The closest equivalent would be passing notes in class, and that almost never went on for as long as a text conversation might. But letters had been largely supplanted by telephones at that point, so ‘conversational writing’ was not a thing she had to master.
So whereas people around my age or younger tend to text like we’re scripting our own dialogue and need to convey the right intonations, my mom writes her texts like she’s expecting her Eighth grade English teacher to come and mark them in red pen. She has learned that proper punctuation and mistakes are more acceptable, but when she considers putting effort into how she’s writing, it’s always the lines of making it more formal or technically correct, and not along the lines of ‘how would this sound if you said it out loud?’
the linguistics of written languages in quick conversational format will never not be interesting to me like it’s fascinating how we’ve all just silently learned what an ellipsis or exclamation mark implies and it’s totally different in different communities or generations or whatever
earlier this month it was 120 degrees in Australia , but yeah lets continue to mock those trying to save us in the 12 years we have left to slow climate change’s effects.
What is the worst thing that could happen if we listen to scientists and change our ways, and then it turns out they were lying?
Slowly dying in a mad max hell world to own the libs I guess.
this is literally why scientists stopped calling it “global warming” and started calling it “climate change”
because these dense motherfuckers couldn’t get it through their heads that an increase in the average global temperature is, has, and will lead to an increase in extreme weather events including goddamn polar vortexes.
“Fner ner ner, look at all the snow outside, what of your global warming now?? CHECK AND MATE SCIENTISTS so much for your fancy degrees and decades of research” of fucking course you’re still gonna get a winter you goddamn dingdongs! The Earth still has a fucking axial tilt – there is always going to be a portion of the year that is colder because that’s when you’re further away from the sun!
(unless you live between the tropic of cancer and the tropic of capricorn, in which case you’re at more or less the same distance from the sun all year, but presumably then you aren’t pointing to snowfall as proof positive that scientists are spearheading a conspiracy to…i don’t even fucking know. reduce emissions? meanspiritedly destroy the fossil fuel industry, which is gentle and blameless and certainly has never been linked to enormous environmental disasters or long-term health concerns or…?)
Conservatives will be the fucking death of us
Also the reason for these extremely cold temperatures happening and doing so more often is directly a result of literal global warming. Due to rising temperatures (thanks to climate change caused by humans which is real and happening right now and fuck anyone who says otherwise), the Arctic sea ice has been melting more and more without replenishing itself during winter. To make matters worse, the more ice that melts, the more ocean is exposed, which absorbs (rather that reflecting like ice does) the sun’s energy, further heating up.
This rise in polar temperatures is the reason the polar vortex is currently above the US and making Day After Tomorrow a reality
For those who don’t know, a polar vortex is an area of low pressure that likes to chill around the poles (both north and south but the north is more relevant here). These areas of cold, dense air are usually kept in check by jet streams: long, narrow, fast flowing air currents caused by two masses of air that are different in density/pressure/temperature etc. meeting.
The polar jet streams in particular are caused by the meeting of cold, dense low pressure polar air and warm high pressure air from the tropics. It’s usually pretty strong, especially during winter, as the temperature gradient between the poles and the tropics is rather large. The bigger the difference, the stronger the wind, and the less likely that polar air escapes southwards.
However, due to the warming around the north pole thanks to the melting sea ice and warming oceans, this gradient is decreasing.
This results in a weaker polar jet stream, which allows the vortex to meander all over the place, such as down south into the US, bringing the cold dense air with it.
Please go forth and use this information to make sure the idiots using this cold snap as piss poor evidence that climate change isn’t real know that they’re wrong and they should feel bad. Also maybe tie them down and make them watch this video (which is where I got these gifs from) which is a good (but terrifying) explanation of how extreme weather events are becoming and will become more common as a result of anthropogenic climate change.
i love how hobbits are canonically so good at hiding in plain sight that they’re basically cryptids to anyone in middle-earth outside of the shire and bree
my personal theory is that anyone passing through nearby who doesn’t know better sees hobbit tracks on the dirt roads and assumes from the size of the footprints that the area must be inhabited by creatures of matching stature, and just gives the whole place a wide berth

Name: Wiggler Segment
Debut: Paper Mario Sticker Star
Today’s post will finally mark the end of Allies Week here on [email protected], with an ally that is also sort of an enemy. Yes, we know it lasted more than a week. We wanted to keep it going! Time isn’t real anyway! Do whatever you want! Eat breakfast for dinner! It’s great!
Anyway, it’s true that Sticker Star and Color Splash are bland and disappointing when it comes to characters. Heck, we have a whole post about it! But ironically, their determination to include only existing characters led to perhaps one of the strangest things in the franchise…
In World 3, Mario encounters a friendly Wiggler, who has been split into five segments by Kamek. These segments are scattered throughout the land, and it’s up to Mario to get them back! Also, Wiggler behaves like a child- since he is a larva, after all- and refers to his segments as his children. And also also, the segments are all still sentient.
That’s right! The third world of this game is entirely centered around tracking down sentient, disembodied larval segments as they get into all sorts of shenanigans, in order to put a living caterpillar back together. Wow! That’s grade-A silliness!
The reason they’re sort of enemies is that in order to get the segments to join you, you’ll have to battle them, and they’re rambunctious, expertly dodging many of your attacks! Good thing their battle theme, like the rest of the soundtrack, supremely slaps.
So why did Kamek split up Wiggler, anyway? Well, since every forest in Mario is poison for some reason, their justification here is that it’s the work of a corrupted Gooper Blooper. Wiggler, for whatever reason, is invulnerably to poison, and would have been able to reach the island where Gooper Blooper dwells, and Kamek simply cannot allow that.
The segments are totally unfazed even when drenched with poison! I have no idea why!
Finally, we have Wiggler’s diary. This is a rare example of entirely missable content, which if you ask me, is extremely anxiety inducing! But the content in this case is quite lovely. If you bring Wiggler’s segments to the right locations, they’ll add a page to the diary, and I will show those all under the cut!

call me ignorant but i genuinely don’t understand why sports have to be split up by gender.
@ everyone in the notes talking about physical performance: if that were the case, then sports would be divided by physical performance. that’s a thing you can measure. that’s a thing that varies by individual. a weak man and a strong man would be an unfair fight in boxing/wrestling/MMA, which is why they divide those sports up into weight groups based on physical performance. but they also further segregate them based on gender. chess is segregated by gender for no reason but sexism. if it’s actually about skill and physical ability, then measure those and separate people by those metrics. don’t do some bullshit gender segregation and pretend like men and women are inherently on different levels no matter their individual abilities.
Remember that time a teenage girl struck out Babe Ruth? That’s fucking why. Men are afraid of being beaten by women.
Remember that time male swimmers were pulled out of training because Kate Ledecky was leaving them ‘broken’ by swimming better than them? Remember how she didn’t even notice, because she was busy actually training?
Shooting is a sport that has no reliance on strength and so any allowance for gender variation is irrelevant. The last time there was a mixed competition (1992) a chinese woman named Zhang Shan won it.
It’s often presented as for the benefit of women. After all, they’ll be heartbroken when they‘re hurt or bested by men.
Projection is a hell of a drug.
this is why they drug test Serena like crazy. the believe no woman should be that good. let alone a black woman. and black women have always been considered “manly” and less feminine.
also can we talk about how surfing is segregated as well? like how the dude who won this years international surfing cup or whatever was given $30,000 worth of prize money, while the woman who won the women’s comp was only awarded like $16,000 of prize money???? or whatever it was. but I know it was either half or less than half of what the man won. like why can’t they get the same prize money and when they’re competing internationally in the same competition? they surely have the same level of skill and talent.
the pay gap in sports between men and women is fucking insane.
The pay gaps, not to mention lack of sponsorships for women athletes who don’t look like models is insane. If you weigh over 250 pounds, no one will sponsor you. It’s why most female Olympic-class weightlifters live in poverty/out of their cars.
