The thing that always gets me about the conduct of Ukraine in the Donbass region—the use of disproportionate, genocidal, oftentimes ethnic-based violence against a population as a reaction to the existence of popular separatist factions within it and branding them terrorists—is that it is literally bar-for-bar what the westerners who accuse China of genocide against Uyghurs believe China is doing in Xinjiang. Except unlike the nazi Ukrainian regime, the PRC never levelled entire towns and streets in Xinjiang with bombs or sent in literal nazis to slaughter Uyghur villages whole. Except there is no credible evidence of widespread Chinese Uyghur popular support for the ETIM separatists like there is for the People’s Republics of Donbass. Except the ETIM are literal Al-Qaeda aligned salafist terrorists whose militants have fought in Syria and who would see the unique culture of Chinese Uyghur Muslims destroyed and subsumed into some wannabe Islamic state monstrosity. Literally every thing the PRC has been erroneously accused of doing to Uyghurs, Ukraine has provably done tenfold to the people of Donbass with the explicit aim of “derussification”, IE at best the erasure of a minority culture with equal claim to the land, at worst(considering their actions since the 2010s) plainly stated intent to genocide and the willingness+material support from the entire political establishment of the west to carry it out.
It’s just kind of crazy how westerners can condemn (largely fictional) crimes in one context and support them unflinchingly in another; a moral code entirely dependant on what the US state department is currently saying.
