So. Tyr, my dog, is a Great Pyraneese. This is important because this breed is known to be smart. Not in the way a German Shepherd or border Collie is smart, and wanting to please a human; Great Pyrs are independent minded and bred to Be Management of herds when a human might not be around.

Anyway.

It has been very pleasant out. We had the windows cracked and left them cracked when we went to work. This has never been an issue before.

My darling spouse was working on a job in a small town about a mile from our place. He was getting some stuff from the work van when he sees a large white dog prancing along.

Our dog, Lord Percival Hundstein von Sidney Westen de Doggo ll (but you can call him Percy), is to our best estimation a GP/Coonhound mix, and this tracks. He definitely wants to be around us, and is pleased when we are pleased, but does not see it as his job to please us. Indeed, this dog feels he should be allowed to do whatever he wants and we should be happy with the outcome.

He makes a wealth of decisions, mostly centered around home security and constant vigilance, and frankly, can't understand why we're not getting with the program.

A part of the reason we were fine leaving windows cracked was because Tyr is on 24-7-365 security detail, and while she has gotten much better about reactivity OUTSIDE the house, she would absolutely no questions asked attempt to murder anyone who broke in without our permission.

Her least favorite person in the world is the mail carrier and the UPS man, who comes up on HER PORCH and knocks on HER DOOR, THE DOOR TO THE PACK DEN, HOW VERY DARE.

Growing up I had a Hovawart, which is like the dark shadow version of a Great Pyrenees. NORMALLY Hovawarts don’t leave the property, because their whole shtick is guarding the property.* Ceasar however had a very…. Liberal… understanding of what his property was, and that it definitely included the neighboring farm and said farm’s peafowl. Because of this he was not allowed out alone unless he was tethered (fences are not even a suggestion to these dogs)

Once my dad and I were in the kitchen making dinner, and I noticed Ceasar was standing at the back door. So I just…. Opened it, and in he trotted. Dad looked and me, and I looked at dad. “Did you let him out??” Dad asked in a very incredulous voice. “No,” I said in confusion, because surely DAD had let him out? Then: “wait, he wasn’t tethered, he just came in!”

That’s when i noticed that the screen to the window we had opened had a massive hole in it. The wonderful rat bastard literally ripped the screen open and jumped out.

Next day dad stopped round our neighbor’s and asked if he’d seen the dog last night. “Sure did,” our neighbor said, “he was checking on the peacocks. Thought you sent him out to do the rounds.”

*once our front door blew open while we were gone, and our OTHER Hovawart, Keeva, was found hours later just lounging across the threshold and keeping the other dogs inside. Which is exactly what she was SUPPOSED to do, because she was a perfect princess and not a perfect little rat bastard.

His girlfriend had been fending off the 5 drunk guys for most of the evening by explaining that even if she was going to ditch her boyfriend, she can't possibly leave without finishing her beer, which she is keeping perpetually full via careful sleight of hand where she's just pouring it back and forth into and out of the pitcher.

However the drunk guys are also drinking, and eventually she can't afford to buy another pitcher for the table so she can't keep up the ever-full beer glass trick. At this point she has to resort to setting up the pool trick shot that she's never seen anyone but her boyfriend pull off, and says she'll leave with whoever manages the shot first.

That buys her another hour or so and then, finally, her boyfriend makes it back. He looks like shit, hair down and just a mess, he's wearing an entirely different jacket that he got from an alley, and barely recognizable—especially to 5 guys who've been drunk for hours now. He lurks for a minute, finds out what's going on, and proceeds to pull off the trick shot first try. Throws the jacket off, fixes his hair with a hair tie his girlfriend lends him, finally looks like himself again, and THEN beats the shit out of them with the pool cue.

SO I SHOW PART OF THIS FILM AT AN ANIME CON PANEL AND IT GETS BETTER/WORSE

(For those who are about to ask, it’s called Throne of Blood in English but its actual name is Spiderweb Castle and some Shakespeare scholars are big mad about it because other Shakespeare scholars consider it the best film adaptation of Macbeth ever made and we can’t have that)

THE ARCHERS DIDN’T KNOW MIFUNE’S BLOCKING. Every time you see him fling out an arm he’s actually signaling to the archers which way he’s about to go. That’s it, that’s what they had to go on. And they were shooting on location on Mount Fuji, which Akira Kurosawa had chosen SPECIFICALLY FOR ITS DENSE FOG.

However, BECAUSE this was Akira Kurosawa—if you don’t know that name think “Stanley Kubrick but earlier and Japanese and not quite as much of an asshole to his actors”—and he was insane, Mifune is also wearing real 19th-century feudal lord armor, in the sense that while it’s a modern reproduction it is completely functional. A feudal lord from the early 1800s could have been resurrected in the 1950s when this was filmed, handed this armor, and would have gone “yeah, that’s correct.” There are actually a couple of shots where you see arrows hit his torso and bounce off, or stick in the armor but they’ve very clearly only just barely stuck rather than going through.

So his torso is protected, and there’s a railing in front of him that provides some protection to his legs, and yes, this means THE MOST VULNERABLE PART OF HIM WAS ALSO THE ONLY PART THAT WOULD DEFINITELY KILL HIM: his face. I’m sure it was of very little comfort to him that the archers also weren’t very powerful shots.

Oh, and his character dies by taking an arrow through the neck. You can tell that one is a trick shot because it’s the only shot filmed from that specific angle, but I can imagine Mifune was none too eager to do it after all this.

While I’m here: you should watch Spiderweb Castle. I show it because it is a GORGEOUS retelling of Macbeth, which is relevant to my panel, but more importantly Kurosawa decided to shoot it in the style of Noh theatre drama, and that’s what I like to highlight. Although the story that inspired it is Western, Kurosawa took one look at it and went “oh that is 1000000% a thing that would have happened here” and the story as he tells it is so clearly, fully, and unashamedly Japanese in both style and tone. It’s a fantastic look into another culture and a masterful film.

My understanding is that while they were "real" arrows (actual physical arrows being fired through the air by bows), they weren't real arrowheads. They were thin needles, strong enough to stick into wood but not strong enough to penetrate his armor, and short enough that even if he was hit it wouldn't kill him unless it was a very unfortunate shot (like straight through the eye).

lethal company is such a crazy good game it gets to me sometimes... no other game does prox chat so well. the way your voice is altered by the presence of walls between you and your teammates and even having a headcrab on you or being underwater. the aesthetic is so specific and unique. the visuals are a perfect mix of low poly and gritty. it runs on basically anything. the gameplay loop is fun and doesn't get repetitive because it lets YOU dictate which moons you go to. YOU get to determine what gear you bring which also lets you set your own difficulty. but even then, you never know what you're gonna get. sometimes s+ moons are a cakewalk and sometimes you get fucked over by a b difficulty moon that spawns a man-eater and 3 coilheads in a mineshaft interior. you get forced into comedically impossible situations so often. earned deaths as you narrowly skirt spiders and thumpers are just as funny as stupid deaths that happened because you mistimed a jump or accidentally backed into a slime or reacted too slowly to a turret. and yet, deaths never feel punishing. it doesn't feel like you're being a drag on your teammates when you die in lethal company. there's an equal amount of strategy and fuck it we ball in this game, mostly because any strategy you come up with falls apart almost immediately when an enemy you didn't account for shows up in a spot you didn't expect them to. and the enemies! they're all so unique and have such interesting triggers and workarounds and conditions. there's so much variety. the screams of a kidnapper fox, the growls of the dogs, the warped howls of a man-eater. there's usually a way to avoid or evade them - i like that they all have different weaknesses and blind spots. and the visuals for them are fascinating and unsettling. man, seeing your teammate get turned into a plant monster with their body hanging lifelessly from the organism that is now piloting it? Fucked Up. like this game really does such a good job of balancing funny with creepy in a way that keeps me, a non-horror fan, coming back over and over again and again. i'm creeped out, yes, but i'm also usually giggling and shrieking and having a great time running from a thumper only to turn a corner and get my shit rocked by a loot bug or something equally stupid. hiding in the ship while an old bird firebombs us and plays screaming baby noises and trying not to breathe too loud so we don't draw a dog into the ship only to see the ghost girl is closing in on you and now you're the only person left alive to slam the lever is an experience you can only get through this game and i love it so much
