Alex: George will be there for me whenever I need him :)))
George: Alex will be there for me in every metaphorical way but otherwise he's totally useless
Lando: if you take me at my word and strand me on a desert island with George then I will kill all of you
"don't worry scientists will invent a way to solve climate change!" They already did... several times over... just the people who didnt like their solutions (cough cough oil companies) had enough cash to shut them up both legally and illegally
if billie eilish donating 11.5 million dollars for food inequity & climate changes is performative activism then i think we need more performative activism
MARK NOO i knew the news was gonna take this out of context😭😭
luckily this article talked about how Mark is anti-ai and how he responded to the accusations in chat during his livestream, but what a ridiculous quote to put right at the end
summary of the livestream under the cut
if you get the chance to watch the VOD for yourself, absolutely do it. he said a ton of super good information that I'm probably going to butcher in this kind-of-short summary. i linked the stream above, it's about an hour long, so go check it out!!
but if you want a summary, for the first hour of the stream he answered people's questions about various things:
his opinions on current "ai" (extremely nuanced, but basically it's scary how much it has improved in just a couple years, and how much it tricks people)
the ACTUAL environmental impact of using ai (the data centers that ai runs on use fresh water evaporation to cool their servers, so that is draining the fresh water sources that already drought-stricken towns have access to)
how ai is threatening creative fields (it is a huge threat, but there's more hope than people think, so don't give up on your passions)
if he thinks ai should be banned (it's nuanced, but current ai, probably)
if he thinks proper restrictions are being placed on ai (in short, no, companies don't understand what they're putting into their products enough to restrict it properly)
he also answered questions about his personal use of ai:
using it in thumbnails (he used it a couple times years ago when ai images first became a thing, when ai still sucked, before he knew how bad it was. he plans to take down those thumbnails and replace them)
using ai in podcast episodes (he did it as a way to showcase how terrible it was at first, then as a way to showcase how scarily good it had gotten, to spread awareness. after people's concern that he uses it too much in episodes however, he's pretty much stopped)
using chatgpt in his daily life (he hasn't used it for months, he hates it)
using chatgpt in the Ethan peanut butter video (he understands people's concerns, he again did it to show awareness for how scary its misinformation can be)
using it in Cloak branding (he hasn't been as involved with Cloak lately because he's been busy with his movie, but from his understanding, someone on the team bought the promo image from adobe stock without realizing it was ai. he's dealing with that now and will replace it soon)
BUT AT THE END OF THE STREAM
he talked about how current ai is not ACTUALLY ai - it just puts words together one after another in the order it is programmed to put them in. it cant think for itself, justify its answers, or cite its sources
then he talked about something that Bob's wife - Mandy - has been doing. she has an incredible Phd in statistics that is so advanced that her degree actually had to be DELAYED until enough experts showed up in the US that could verify her thesis. she was in an amazing research team for years (Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory) that has made super cool scientific studies about ai and technology
recently, she QUIT her job on that research team to found "Real Good Ai", which is a nonprofit that is trying to create real, genuine, ethical, true ai from the ground up. go to their website or watch the end of Mark's stream for better info about their mission statement, I'm not nearly educated enough to understand everything they're saying
but basically, she's trying to make "real" ai that can do the Good Things (helping doctors make faster and more accurate diagnoses, being a genuine tool for scientists, analyzing huge chunks of data quicker than people can, etc) without stealing data, destroying the environment, wasting people's money, taking people's jobs, etc.
Mandy is an incredible genius. Bob is the head of the board of directors on her team, offering her tons of support. Mark is the second highest on the board and - as far as i know - is the only person funding this project because no company in their right mind would fund something like this
this is such a cool project and is way more than i ever expected would come from Mark's livestream. he hates current "ai" so much that he wants to see it scrapped and replaced with what it SHOULD have been in the first place - an amazing, potentially lifesaving tool. who knows where the project will go, but i wish Mandy and the other researchers so much luck!
ive gotten so much mileage out of this tweet. every time i see something on the internet that makes me mad i just think to myself "people in real life: hey man how's it going" and i keep it pushing
I don’t think people actually get how hard Lando was pushing this nightmare car. Mediums usually drop off at 0.05s per lap. Lando was at 0.07s. Doesn’t sound like much, right? Except by the time he pitted, those tyres had been dead for almost 10 laps. Zero grip. Nothing.
And he did that while fighting a tailwind that cost him half a second every single lap in Turn 16. Still managed to hang in Charles’ DRS for half the race when, realistically, Charles should’ve smoked him in both DRS zones. The Ferrari had almost 30 km/h on the McLaren down the straights. Lando’s DRS barely gave him +15 km/h. Charles should’ve been long gone by Lap 2, minimum.
But Lando clung to him like a fucking tick. One mistake from Charles and Lando would’ve had him, and Charles knew it.
I cannot overstate this: Lando should not have finished anywhere in the points. The McLaren is literally the slowest car on the grid in a straight line. Actual slowest. And he still put it P7 by holding onto a Ferrari and a Red Bull. From a technical standpoint, it was impossible. And he fucking did it.
