I've always been wondering about this line in His Kiss, The Riot "The devil take this Orpheus/ And his belladonna kiss" like what is so special about the belladonna that Hades associates it with Orpheus?

I only knew that it is poisonous, can make you hallucinate and in very high doses could even kill you. Could be a metaphor for Orpheus, who makes you see the world how it could be in spite of the way that it is, which could be interpreted as a form of hallucination, but that's not specific enough for me.

So I decided to google and it says that the scientific name for belladonna is Atropos Belladonna. The Genus Atropa was derived from Atropos, one of the Three Fates in Greek Mythology. Atropos is the third and oldest Fate, who cuts the thread of life after her sisters have spun and measured it. The species name belladonna, which means beautiful women in Italian, was chosen in reference to the cosmetical use of the berries during the Renaissance. Woman would use the berry juice in eyedrops to dilate the pupils and make their eyes look more seductive. And WOW, this makes so much more sense now.

And imo this background makes His Kiss, The Riot so much more final, bc it's not just some poisonous kiss, but the final kiss to end it all. Like, this whole situation is not just some circumstance that happened by chance, but it was orchestrated and decided by the Fates. And you can't tell me this reference was unintentional. Using the belladonna as a reference to the Fates was a deliberate decision.

Other notes from the Wiki page that made me think of Hadestown in some way include:

1. Other plants of the deadly nightshade family have been used to make, amongst other things, love potions - Orpheus, who makes the Gods fall in love again

2. The Roman empress Livia Drusilla used the juice of Atropa belladonna berries to murder her husband, the emperor Augustus. - also Orpheus, who overthrows Hades and his capitalism, more a figurative murder, but still

3. The Wine of mandrake, another plant of the nightshade family, was used as an anaesthetic against pain and sleeplessness - Persephone, who uses wine to drown her sorrow and guilt and who would without the wine probably have lots of sleepless nights and feel much more emotional pain

I love finding more and more layers to this show! Also since belladonna dilates your eyes, I’m wondering if it could also be a metaphor of how Orpheus’s songs have opened the eyes of the workers in Hadestown to the fact that there’s more to life than working to survive??

I am DEEPLY curious what the structure of wild canids looks like compared to show dogs but it is hard to get a coyote in a hand stack, is the problem

Ok this isn’t quite a stack but it does track with what I’ve seen of Coyotes in the wild- hips are Juuuuuuust lower than the shoulders, the tail hangs until they’re really stoked about something and they have LONG necks with lil heads. In Motion, they walk straight-backed and keep thier heads fairly high, but the tail still slopes.

Gray wolf is not dissimilar to coyote but... chonkier. Coyote is a square, Wolf is a Rectangle, also his feet rest a lot further back than the coytote’s.

Red Fox meanwhile, is walking around with his hips higher than his shoulders, and his feet rest farther forward than his hip joint.

And rounding out the list of Wild Canids I thought of at 3 AM, we have the Maned Wolf which...

That sure is an animal alright.
