have you ever felt like your art is not good enough / you constantly can't draw what you imagine in your head? how do you deal with it? i'm struggling with it myself rn
I think the most important step here is to think hard and define your exact problem...I hate everything I do, but it's more of a mental thing that I need to overcome or get it over with drawing already. However, you may dislike your drawings for more practical reasons, for example, your anatomy/ composition or some other skills may be lacking and you see this but are yet to form muscle memory to overcome the problem. Getting good at drawing involves a lot of looking at stuff and understanding how it works besides actual practice and this is a process that goes on passively as we live and observe the world around us too. What I'm trying to say - often times the disconnect you experience comes because you grew as an observer but are yet to transfer this growth into art, so, for me, at times like this, it's really important to remind myself that this dissatisfaction actually means I'm ready to grow and make a step forward AND THEN sit and think what skill I'm ready to refine in particular. Once you have this pinned down I would recommend to just sit and collect examples of good technical execution of what you are trying to achieve. Analyze them, do some "for yourself" studies from them that you won't post and you will actually get better at this stuff

deriding things as performative is anti third space
im sitting on a patio at my favorite cafe rn and im hand stitching them hem of a dress im working on. and i can see why someone would say im being performative by working on something like this in a public space. but frankly theres no element of that. i just want to work somewhere that isnt my apartment. i want to be in public, i wanna chat with strangers, i wanna see the world. it’s nice to hang out somewhere that isnt my home!
what i mean is when you say people are being performative you discourage them from doing shit they love in public. and thats no way to foster the world we want to see.

Hey do you know what rumination is?
Rumination is probably the most common type of OCD compulsion, but I rarely see anyone talking about it. I've talked to multiple people diagnosed with OCD who didn't even recognize it as a compulsion.
Basically, if you have OCD you have terrible intrusive thoughts. They can be about anything, but common themes are fear of being a bad person, fear of hurting someone, fear of contamination. etc.
Rumination is when you get stuck in a spiral. Rumination is when you spend hours catastrophizing, overthinking, analyzing, telling yourself it's going to be okay.
I'll say it again:
Rumination is a compulsion.
Rumination is a compulsion, and that means you have to stop doing it.
I did ERP (exposure response prevention) for my OCD with a therapist! For 9 months! And it did help, but the idea didn't really click until I found this website a couple years later.
And Oh My God. It made things make so much more sense, and I was able to pull myself out of an episode even though I wasn't in therapy or on meds at the time.
Genuinely if you have OCD, or even if you suspect you have OCD, I'm begging you to read some of these articles.
Like this was genuinely life changing for me.
Here are some of the ones that were most helpful to me:

How to Stop Ruminating

Reblogging to read later since I have this problem and haven’t ever really been treated for it. I feel like it will help.
