Heh. I'm in the Bug Leagues, Kid. No, not the Big Leagues. The Bug Leagues. I'm kind of a Bug Deal, you could say. I'm covered in bugs. I'm covered in bugs
I often feel like a forager wasp when I'm buying dairy for my family
I posted this to my tiktok and someone commented this:
hey. don’t cry ok? there are over 20,000 known species of bees in the world, categorized into seven distinct families.
hang in there. approximately 10% of bee species in the US have not yet been formally described or named.
Tag yourself and learn about your bees🐝
I drew 100 bees, but there are over 20000 species of bees! Some bees are moving leaves, scraping plant hair, or sticking out their tongues. Some male bees have hairy faces and unusually shaped legs. There are also baby bees that have just hatched from their petal nests.
Search for your favorite bees to find photos and information!

I've packed the Blender project file and the images into a zip here:
Did you know wasps switch from ham to jam foraging during the late summer?
A fabulous and wasp-friendly set of suggestions for when they crash your picnic. (Because we all gotta eat…)
Yes!!! I figured out this method independently, and it works great!
I will add, though, that this article is specific to European wasps (article is focused in the UK). If you're in the US, we have wasp biting season (protein season) later in the year -- in the northwest, I tend to be bitten around mid August to late September, give or take. This is because some wasps need extra protein to feed to male larva near the end of nesting season. (I don't know why, but I learned that when I did a project on social wasps in high school. I know social wasps are haplo-diploid, so maybe that has something to do with it? Idk. I'm also confused because insects contain more protein per pound than beef, which I imagine is similar to other mammals. I don't know why they bite mammals for "more protein." Maybe there's something else they need that we have more of than caterpillars. It is an hour and a half past my bedtime, so I'm not looking it up now.)
But point is, some wasps in my area will want more protein late in the season. And they'll start biting live mammals for it. I've found the best thing to do is just hold still and let them bite (it hurts but not that bad, esp if you've been bitten by larger animals, and it hurts WAY less than being stung). They USUALLY just take a small chunk of you and leave. If they try to chew out some more it can be more painful, but it's usually pretty short, time-wise. If you try to wave them away or smack them, they might sting, and that hurts WAY more. Just let her take a chunk and she'll leave. Then make sure to WASH the bite with soap and water. And disinfect it with 70% or higher alcohol (beer won't do it. Use actual isopropyl/rubbing alcohol). Remember that wasps eat carrion and rotting fruit. You need to WASH insect bites amd stings.
Wasps are wonderful pest control and fascinating critters to watch. They will generally play nice with you if you learn how to read and react to their body language, be respectful, and move slowly and deliberately. I've had great luck giving wasp offerings at outdoor events. If you chill out as much as possible they'll be less agitated (because a lot of insects communicate with pheromones so they literally smell your fear and think you're going to attack them).
