This snake does not have a common name in English.
Though this snake has been known for some time, it was first scientifically described in 2009.

Western gaboon viper/adder (Bitis rhinoceros). This species looks very similar to its close relative the gaboon viper/adder (aka Bitis gabonica) however their external differences mainly rest on two factors: the āhornsā atop the internasal scales (the scales between the nose at the top of the snout) and the triangle pattern beneath the eye. B. gabonica has two triangles beneath the eye and no internasal horn whereas B. rhinoceros does (hence why the species epithet is aptly named after the rhinoceros).
Western gaboon vipers are found in Northwest Africa along the Gulf of Guinea from Senegal through parts of western Nigeria. Not sure where this was filmed, so it could also be a captive or wild specimen. Very cool snake :)
Came out of the woodworks for this one because I was tagged in the comments! Iāve actually seen this video before on a different platform, and someone else in the comments already IDād this one.
Itās a reticulated python! Iām not sure where exactly this video was taken but the way the snake moves up the tree is the key identifier here. This is called concertina locomotion and reticulated pythons have been documented climbing trees in this fashion.
You can also see the blotched patterning of the snakeās body, reminiscent of other brown python species such as the Burmese python, African rock pythons, etc. but what sets the reticulated python apart is not only the reticulated blotchy pattern, but also the white dots along the āsidesā of the body are a unique trait of this species.
They are a non-venomous constrictor found across South/Southeast Asia but are an invasive species in Puerto Rico. They can get to a pretty decent size (known as the longest snake in the world and third heaviest) and in rare cases they can even swallow adult humans whole. I donāt want to claim that they arenāt dangerous (because they very well can be) but smaller individuals are unlikely to cause any trouble and itās rare one would try eating a person anyways.
Despite the blurriness, I was happy to catch a pic of this snake I found sunning itself when I walked the dog this morning. It's hard to get a clearer image while making sure my pup didn't notice this beautiful little guy. It didn't move a bit, certain in its stick disguise under a small tree. Hard to judge sizes from a distance, but I'd guess it was around 18 inches (45.72 cm) or maybe a little longer.
From local Ohio snake guides I'm tentatively ID'ing this as a Butler's garter snake, which specialize in eating earthworms and leeches! Solid chance it's an Eastern garter snake instead.
Based on the size of the head, I would lean more towards Butlerās garter snake! They tend to have smaller heads than eastern garter snakes, and have two faint yellow spots on the back of their head. The picture is too blurry to really make out any certain details but I think your Ohio snake guides are right. Without a clear photo of the scales for scale counts itās difficult to be 100% certain but its probably safe to call it Butlerās garter snake.
If you want more opinions from people living in Ohio, you could always post it to iNaturalist and see what they think! Very cool find ^^ love it when snakes show up!

Ooh, great question!
I am so so sad every day that woma pythons are so hard to find outside of Australia. When I've been to Australia to meet up with herpetologist friends, their woma pythons were universally absolute delights. Hardy, awesome snakes, and so beautiful, too! They're possible to find elsewhere but they're often prohibitively expensive.
Also, African house snakes! It's so hard to find these guys captive-bred in most areas, but everyone who's ever worked with them absolutely sings their praises. They're easy in terms of care, have great temperaments, and are generally all-around awesome pet snakes. The best pet snakes no one's ever heard of!
Fun fact about these guys is that theyāre a species complex. Boaedon capensis and Boaedon fuliginosus are the two more widespread species of this complex and the boundaries between these species are blurry. Is B. fuliginosus found in Kenya? Many experts say yes, but there is some uncertainty their exact range. Some papers have come out claiming they are restricted to Western Africa.
Itās an interesting and complicated debate to follow. There is even question about whether or not this complex is distinct from Boaedon lineatus (striped house snake). Chances are if you have a captive bred African house snake, the exact species of your snake is possibly unknown without genetic testing since there are intermediates between species within the complex. Unless, of course, you know the snakeās lineage and where in Africa their ancestors originated from.

You can see the heat pits on the labial scales (lip scales) which indicate that itās either a python, boa, or pit viper. You can rule pit viper out because this snake has smooth scales whereas pit vipers have keeled (ridged) scales which give them a rougher texture.
The heat pits in pythons are also less pronounced than the heat pits in boas, and since they arenāt super prominent on this snake, this leads me to believe this is a species of python.
Green tree pythons have a drastically different neonate coloration compared to their adult counterparts!
OP also has the identification in the tags, but I thought it would be a fun idea to parse out why this is a green tree python since Iām not entirely familiar with the species :)
Correct! Green Tree Pythons start out as either yellow or red babies and go through whatās called an āontogenic colour changeā as they transition into adulthood. The time of this change can vary but is usually around six months to a several years. This baby is right around 13 months old.
This particular snake was a yellow baby. You can see just how striking his colour was. A baby banana.
And hereās a better picture of him in the beginning of colour change now that heās calmed down enough for me to get a camera near him XD
When heās fully changed, heāll most likely be a solid, vibrant green with only yellow remaining on the belly. Heās also likely to have some white scales scattered along the dorsal area and also possibly with some blue markings as well.
The colour and pattern of both adults and neos is highly dependent on what we call the locality. Green Tree Pythons are native to New Guinea, Indonesia, and a very small portion of northern Australia. The locality is the location where the individual or the individualās ancestors came from. There is a lot of overlap in patterning between localities so identifying an individual by the pattern alone is not reliable, but you can identify some attributes that are indicative of a certain locality or groups of localities to make an educated guess. There is also argument over where the borders of localities are defined as well as some unreliability on where an individual was actual caught in the wild, as certain localities are more highly sought after than others and this may lead to some sketchy sales practices.
This particular individual reportedly comes from the Aru, Marauke, and Jayapura localities. The Jayapura parent has a very vibrant blue line down the spine with very few white scales. The Aru/Marauke parent has a lot of white scales scattered across the dorsal area with very little blue.

This is a California Kingsnake! They are well known for thinking everything is food. Theyāre opportunists, so in the wild they eat just about everything. Theyāre well known for eating rattlesnakes, and are therefore ākingsā of snakes. As a result they are resistant to rattlesnake venom and pound for pound the strongest constrictor (since it takes a lot of constricting to take down another snake).
They are also pretty docile to humans and have become a common pet! Theyāre sturdy and have not many complicated husbandry requirements, making great snake pets for beginners. Except for the occasional thinking your hand might be food situation. I have found that target training helps with this, and being so food motivated itās pretty easy to train them at any age.
They can come in a variety of colors and patterns, but the most favored is the normal black and white banded California Kingsnake. And totally understandable, theyāre so cool!!
