i dont think james cries. he just doesnt let himself.
the only timr keith has seen james cry was when they were like 17. james had clearly had a shitty day. shitty is putting it lightly, james was moments away from completely disintegrating, about to collapse in on himself like a bridge held together by electrical tape.
he hadnt spoken a word to keith all day - james was usually too preoccupied and overstimulated during lessons, so that wasnt out of the ordinary. it was when he continued to avoid keith between classes and seemingly disappeared at breaks, that he grew partially worried, but mostly pissed.
when the school day had finished, keith decided to not attemp to speak to james until he came to him first - he wasnt going to act desperate, for fuck's sake. if james was mad at him, fine, if he didnt want to talk to him, it didnt matter. if he has a problem he'd let keith know sooner or later.
all day keith had waited to hear a single word from him, for a glimpse of eye contact, to no avail. at around 1am, there came a knock at keith's dorm door (which he didnt share, keith's roommate dropped out after three months and no one offered to room with keith). james didnt wait for an answer before coming in.
keith didnt say anything to him, he didnt even move till james took a shaky breath and gently reached a hand out, which keith took as soon as he realised something was up, and it didnt have anything to do with him.
without looking up, james found keith on his bed and slid onto the mattress, holding his hand, and buried his face into keith's shoulder.
it was only when keith whispered to him something along the lines of "it's okay, you can cry", that james did. only then, and never again since, as far as keith is aware.
