oh. i just found out that the writer of the vincent van gogh doctor who episode wrote it as a tribute to his sister.
Richard Curtis wrote, "So ā hereās the thing ā the key reason I wrote this episode ā was out of love for my sister Bindy. She was a gorgeous and brilliant person, 2 years older than me. She loved Vincent Van Gogh and life. She couldnāt have been more full of generosity and joy.
But half way through her life she was hit by depression and intermittently it hurt her for the rest of her life. And a few years before this show, like Vincent, she took her own life.
And in the key scene of the episode - when they bring Vincent to the future... that was me trying to show Bin how glorious she had been in our lives - and how nothing could change that.
And then also to deal with the fact that mental health issues are hard - and the capacity for joy, as I know Bindy did know how much she was loved, is intertwined with the immense difficulty of the illness sometimes...
So taking her own life wasnāt a failure by her, or a rejection of all of us. It was, as they say on Love island, what it was."
[Image ID: The Garfield "you are not immune to propaganda" meme, edited to say, "I am not immune to the van gogh episode of doctor who." The background of the image has been replaced with the image of the Starry Night sky from said doctor who episode. End ID.]
You get a million dollars, but your most recent google search is tattooed on your forehead Taking the deal?

Edit: THE ONLY CONDITION FOR GETTING THE MONEY IS THAT YOU CAN'T REMOVE THE TATTOO
This is so funny to me. They just woke up one day to this in their emails. They didn't ask for it. They didn't even want it. And yet it's in the episode anyway. Dugga doo is inescapable.
idk why i dugadid this to myself

i do love that at no point did fifteen even hint towards the timeless child in the rani's presence. she kept calling them the last of the time lords & he was like š
like i thought it was going to be the actual captian poppy from space babies trapped in the wish world and itd be a heartwarming story about adoption bc the doctor still considers poppy his child even when he finds out theyre not related and itd tie into the doctor and rubys whole adoption arc but noo
MY DOCTORS MY DOCTORS MY DOCTORS
my whole thing is just that like. there was no point to any of it.
there was no point in bringing back the rani, a character that many people wanted back for decades. we had this whole build up with ms flood for two whole ass seasons for the rani's plan to be inconsequential to anything that happens and brushed aside in the first 30 mins. there was also no point to her bigenerating if the "real" rani just gets... eaten?
there was no point to the doctor letting the rani bring out the omega, a character steeped in the mythos of doctor who, only to make him a giant skeleton who gets shoved back into his little jail after 30 seconds
there was no point to being like "time lord are sterile and that's why poppy is so important" only to make her not the doctor's daughter in the end
there was no point in putting bel into a box the whole episode so they could focus on ruby instead for some reason. and there was no point in shoehorning her into a mother role when her character is predicated on not giving into gender norms andddd after she specifically said she wanted to travel with the doctor now (they did her so dirty all season. she could have been a super memorable companion but they just did not give her a chance and then LITERALLY shoved her into a box)
there was no point in the doctor being able to heal himself with bigeneration energy only to have to regenerate instead of using that instead
there was no point in thirteen coming back for 2 seconds
there was no point in susan popping up (another character we've waiting a longgggg time to see again)
there was no point in ruby's memories
there was no point in rose noble (story of her life)
and now they got rid of a very charismatic and wonderful actor in their titular role for a gimmick
russell... stop wasting my time.
thirteen: hey just popped in to tell you you're tearing apart reality btw. you're gonna destroy the world and also us
fifteen, not taking in a single word: god so true bestie i DO miss being blonde
