"Senior" position requiring 3+ years of experience (alternatively: a non-senior position requiring 5+ years of experience, with no indication there are any junior team members)

So you look at non white collar labor like "maybe that's easier, even if it pays less," and its

Easy jobs are politically important. Hypercompetitive cultures surrounding work generate 'losers' who can't keep up with limitless demands. These people who fall out the bottom don't just become 'twitch streamers' or 'failed youtube channels', or 'etsy craftspeople' but also fascist lackeys. Fascists harvest them; that's what ICE is, before the ridiculous hiring incentives. The guys who fall off the bottom of police departments and private security. Women who fall out the bottom? Right wing politics expects they'll quit working altogether and leave public life. Nonbinary people? Forget it.

Jobs are not just getting harder to find and harder to keep, they're getting harder in general. Even if tools can be used to make certain tasks less arduous than in the past, the performance ceiling continuously becomes the floor and there is no possible way to work hard enough to ensure stability. Even if you don't burn out, in a hypercompetitive world someone has to not be able to keep up, by design, when performance is evaluated. Eventually, that someone WILL be you.

i think more people need to be aware that 1 in 4 americans is unemployed. the employment rate reported by the us government only counts people receiving unemployment benefits. if your benefits ran out or you didn't qualify or you're a freelancer? you don't count.

ive applied for more than 70 jobs this year and haven't gotten so much as an interview. i have a master's degree and years of experience, but i can't even get a shitty admin job because of the executive obsession with operating with as little staff as possible-- to say nothing of the way ai bros are trying to make human employees obsolete.

if not for the obsession with Record Profits Every Quarter so the shareholders can buy another yacht, all of these people (me included) could be employed, under less stress, working easier jobs. easier jobs would also allow more disabled people to work, which is supposedly something the government wants.

let's also not forget the way that prison labor incentivizes the "fire half the employees every 6 months" business model. why pay people even minimum wage when you can exploit a literally captive workforce?

Human Is is a 1955 Philip K. Dick sci-fi short story where a guy goes to another planet for work and when he comes back to Earth his personality has flipped from an asshole to a sweet, kind, considerate man. Everyone's immediately convinced that an alien has taken over his body, this goes all the way to court, and in court his wife testifies that she's noticed no changes at all and so the charges are dropped.

And then there's a bit right at the end of the story as the wife and the husband are walking out of court:

The man's gray eyes flickered. He smiled a little, kind, gentle smile. "I'm afraid you would not be able to pronounce it. The sounds cannot be formed..."

I'm reading a study on how nurses define the term 'drug seeking', and what makes them more likely to put the 'drug-seeker' label on a patient's charts and. well. let me just throw down some quotes

"Needy, unable to cope" (<- you try coping with chronic pain)

"Comfort seeking" (<- you mean.. having a preference for not being in pain.. how criminal)

"Using or trying to obtain drugs on a long-term, chronic base" (<- do you understand what 'chronic pain' means.)

"Asking for pain med then returning to sleep."

"States he’s level 10 pain, but does not appear to be in pain (or ‘5= on appearance)." (<- it is well-known that chronic pain patients tend not to display pain in the same way as acute pain patients)

"Dramatic response to pain" (<- notice how this directly contradicts the comment above. you cannot win)

"Gets IV med, then leaves unit to smoke or walk around" (<- wow requiring medication and then going off to do something you needed pain meds to be able to do is so suspicious)

the article itself put it best when it says: “some comments depict patients trying to apply sound pain management principles, such as continuing to take medication for persistent pain”. no wonder all the other literature on the matter says that women of colour are the most likely group to be labelled drug-seeking. this shit is entirely vibes-based (read: based on the prejudices of nurses and doctors)

nobody ever talks about how selfless it is to choose, over and over again, to not commit suicide. nobody ever acknowledges the tremendous sacrifice suicidal people make every time we choose not to kill ourselves. when a person who is suffering so horribly that death seems like their best option decides not to take their one way out, and to instead remain in hell, day after day, year after year, because they don’t want to hurt the people they love, they are doing something extraordinary. not killing yourself when it’s all you want to do is the purest act of love i can imagine. dying for someone is easy – you don’t have to deal with any of the consequences, you have your moment of nobility and then it’s all over. but living for someone, when the simple fact of consciousness is literal torture for you? every single suicidal person who ever made a choice to not kill themselves in a moment of misery is a goddamn hero in my eyes. wanting to die and still surviving is an act of titanic courage and self-sacrifice. we deserve more credit for it.
