Band Candy really is the episode of all time. Opens with Buffy studying for the SATS in a graveyard, using her number 2 pencil to kill a vampire, and then trying to get out of studying because she just broke her number 2 pencil, only for Giles to pull out another one so that they can keep studying for the SATS in a graveyard. Then Ethan Rayne shows up and decides to turn the adult population of Sunnydale into teenagers so he can get his boyfriend back. Principle Snyder becomes the most pathetic fucking loser ever to exist. Giles steals a coat, knocks out a cop, steals his gun, and then spends the whole episode trying to get it on with Buffy's mom, even though they already had sex on the hood of a police car. Buffy punches Ethan Rayne in the face. He still doesn't get his boyfriend back.

Band Candy is Jane Espenson's first episode of the show, too. Imagine joining a writers room in the third season, new kid on the block, and coming out the gate with THAT episode. An absolute slam dunk, S tier shit, a true flex of an episode. I 100% believe that Espenson joining the series completely changed its comedic trajectory.

It's honestly so unfair that Counterpart never got its moment because it's really a show built for fandom omg. Cold war spy drama but between parallel worlds instead of rival nation states? Come on, that's obsessive fan catnip... AU doubles! Assassins! Sleeper agents! Conspiracies! Longing! Regret! Spotting the differences between the worlds, speculation about the show's mythology, characters going to the other side and seeing what their lives would have been like for want of a nail? Gold.

I honestly think the problem is that it was presented as a prestige drama with a *lil teeny bit of sci fi* so as to not scare off the normals (and tbf it very much is a prestige drama, it moves slowly and deliberately). But the sci fi spin is what gets you invested! It so deepens your understanding of the characters and their relationships... that's fandom shit, baby
