Me explaining writing (badly):
Writing is like vomiting. You know when you have an upset stomach and all you want is to vomit so you can feel better? Well, writing is the same. You have these ideas in your head, making you nervous and anxious to let them out, and then you get your (preferred writing instrument) and it just flows out of you, like a river. You blink it and seven pages are in front of you, finished. And then it's just bliss. So yeah, writing is like vomiting...

This is your daily reminder to not be ashamed of making your life easy for yourself.
Cut your food into small pieces, make the font size 30 on your e book, use straws to drink, get a pen that’s comfortable to hold, take more naps, walk slowly, eat another cookie, buy velcro shoes, re-watch the part you couldn’t understand the first time, write things on your hands so you don’t forget it… whatever you want and/or need
Don’t let anyone tell you how you should be doing things. We don’t need to prove each other anything
to all the fic writers out there who have made 2021 bearable and have given us all countless hours of happiness and escapism, thank you so much
The new Ao3 wank I can't escape is that it sounds like the site has 1.5 million in funds and someone in a finance meeting said that could keep them running for 2-3 years. This is a "suspicious" and "unheard of" amount of money for a nonprofit to have, and I'm hearing all sorts of overblown takes about how it's proof that OTW is run by a bunch of clueless and incompetent people and no one should donate to them again. e.o
--
1.5 million... so... like 3 high level developers for 1 year.
AO3 right on the front says 4,135,000 users.
6,700 people donated this last drive.
That is like .001% of the users keeping the lights on. With that low a turnout on the donation drives, I want them to have one hell of a safety net, and ability to hire for emergencies, or you know coders for that block function we are all hoping to see.
Honestly people, that whole when will I use this math in my life? Right now, right here, this is where we use math and realize what is going on and it is to our benefit.
Reblogging for @anarchycox’s perfect addition.
Every $10 matters. Every single one. It MATTERS. And for those of us who can give me, we’re going to, because we know there are people out there that can’t.
Yup.
The vast majority of donations over the history of OTW have been pretty small. $10-25 range, mostly.
And yes, yes, that isn’t so small for some of you with a bad exchange rate, but that’s just one more reason OTW works how it does: a very small percentage of the users--hopefully people for whom $10 is a couple of fancy coffees--pay, and we all get a service. Other people can give back with their fic or their comments or their recs.
I think people complaining lose sight of just how big AO3 is and just how small the pool of donors is.
Yes, many non-profits only have 4-6 months reserves, and some run month-to-month.
Do you know what most NPOs want? To be stable on a longer horizon.
Do you know what every single NPO that has has received a gift from MacKenzie Scott has said? Some variation of "oh, god, we can actually plan more than a year out, because we aren't in risk of the lights turning off!" The fact that the AO3's users can and do see fit to give us the fiscal stability to have organizational stability is gods-sent, and every single volunteer knows and loves them for it.
I do want to point out a flaw in your math, @anarchycox, though. They note that the front page says 4.1 million users. Yes, that's 4.1 million accounts, active and inactive and sock. But per one of our systems admins, in the last week, the servers received 440 million pageviews, and the majority of requests? Not from logged-in users - we see a lot of traffic from users who don't have an account (or are choosing to not log in). In August of this year, one aggregate site our systems team uses to estimated we had 17.76 million unique visitors that month - four times our actual accounts. So that 0.001% donation rate? Chunk it further!
It’s lonelier to be in a group of people who you don’t match with than to be all alone
