An UNMARKED police car pulled up behind her and put his lights on. Laurenās parents have always told her to never pull over for an unmarked car on the side of the road, but rather to wait until they get to a gas station, etc. Lauren had actually listened to her parents advice, and promptly called, 112 on her cell phone to tell the police dispatcher that she would not pull over right away. She proceeded to tell the dispatcher that there was an unmarked police car with a flashing red light on his rooftop behind her. The dispatcher checked to see if there were police cars where she was and there werenāt, and he told her to keep driving, remain calm and that he had back up already on the way.Ā Ten minutes later 4 cop cars surrounded her and the unmarked car behind her. One policeman went to her side and the others surrounded the car behind. They pulled the guy from the car and tackled him to the ground. The man was a convicted rapist and wanted for other crimes. I never knew about the 112 Cell Phone feature. I tried it on my AT&T phone & it said, āDialing Emergency Number.ā Especially for a woman alone in a car, you should not pull over for an unmarked car. Apparently police have to respect your right to keep going on to a safe place. *Speaking to a service representative at Bell Mobility confirmed that 112 was a direct link to State trooper info. So, now itās your turn to let your friends know about āDialing, 112ā You may want to send this to every Man, Woman & Youngster you know; it may well save a life.Ā This applies to ALL 50 states PLEASE PASS ALONG TO FRIENDS AND FAMILY, IT CAN SAVE A LIFEā¦.

How typeface influences the way we read and think
Last summer, CERN was on the verge of announcing a discovery so critical to understanding the basic building blocks of the universe that it had been given a divine name: The God particle. The hunt for the Higgs boson was one of the most expensive and labor-intensive particle physics projects ever undertaken, and promised to answer the fundamental but elusive question of why our atoms stick together in the first place. I've always thought Baskerville was one of the best fonts out there, and now I know I'm right. Ā Know why?

And I knew that Comic Sans was one of theĀ worst, gaia-awful fonts out there, and I'm still right! Ā They don't call itĀ comic for no reason. Ā It's a joke! Ā (Sadly, I once had a Spanish teacher who insisted that every typed assignment be printed with that font. Ā Easy to read, but how can you take it seriously?)
Seriously, though, for those of you interested in graphic design, or even just making little icons (ever spend hours fiddling, just trying to find the right text for the icon? I know I have!), this is a very interesting read (with a good video to watch). Ā It actually puts into words just why that proper text choice is important - it's an expression of what you're trying to convey. Ā
I think next time I need to use some subtle, subliminal messaging in the next report I write, I'll be incorporating it into the font style. ;)

I really love this; I wonder where I can find more by this artist?ā but the person who posted the image cited the source as [for example] āweheartit.comā (or worse, no source at all). Assuming the OP is not the artist, hereās a handy guide that will help you find the original source!
(A lot of people donāt care about sourcing, thatās fine! but I care about sourcing, and I like to do it because it gives people a connection to the artist. This guide is for those who also care about sourcing but donāt really know how to go about it.) That way you donāt have to rely on the OP to source their images, either.

So, I completely forgot it's Father's Day
Seriously, not my thing. But, I thought Iād just take a moment to muse on my fathers - and mothers, actually. Parents, blood or otherwise. I remember when I was, oh, a pre-teen, I think? Tween? Whatever theyāre calling the 10-13 crowd right nowā¦. I had the ārevelationā that parents are people too. It was actually kind of scary to realize that, to know they had flaws and weaknesses, and could be scared and angry and make mistakes. Fast forward 10+ years later, I guess I should take a moment to muse on it. In a few years, Iāll be 30 (blows my mind) and I really, really donāt feel my age. Iāve come to the conclusion you never do. People are always growing and learning, and thatās part of what sortāve puts me in awe of parents. I mean, okay, none of them are perfect. But you know what? They have lives theyāre living, where theyāre going through their own things, having their own struggles, their own wants and needs, fears and dreams, and they werenāt ātrainedā to be parents. Theyāre raising a child - or children - while still keeping up with their own life. If you stop to think about it, thatās a hell of a task. And thereās no second chance or reboot button. They get one shot, and children can be cruel. Not being a parent myself, I canāt truly comprehend, and I wonāt pretend I do. That said, I know enough to say that parents are, by and large, very impressive people. Iām not saying theyāre perfect (no one is) or that they did the best job (too easy to make mistakes) or anything like that. I know, in the case of myself and some close friends, they have parents who at least tried, but literally cannot do what they wish they could. But they mean well. You have to take it all into consideration, I guess. Iām not supporting the abusers or people who flake off, or just shelve their kids. But, to those parents out there who care, and who do their best, I just want to tell you that today, at least one mun thinks youāre pretty awesome. Itās an incredible job youāve taken on, and I commend you. Have a good day.

Parents aren't perfect, and maybe some of them aren't even good. Ā But if theyĀ try, if they aren'tĀ bad people, then they deserve our respect, if not also our thanks. Ā
Really, parents aren't any different thanĀ you.Ā Do you thinkĀ you deserve someone's love and respect? Ā Then your parents probably do, too. Ā We're all imperfect. Ā But most of us try to do the right thing. Ā Most of us are genuinely good people. Ā Some of us just don't know how to show it or act it.
Obviously, there are all exceptions to this, and only you are in a position to say whetherĀ your parents deserve your support. Ā But take a moment to think about it. Ā Put yourself in their shoes. Ā Today's a good day for that. Ā And if they aren't everything you want or need them to be, then what areĀ you going to do about it? Ā Ever thought aboutĀ helping them out? Ā You're strong enough for it. Ā But do you have the will and conviction to change things for the better? Ā If you can do nothing but complain, then the problem isn't theirs, it'sĀ yours. Ā We all bear responsibility for our own family.
Reading the Director's post made me remember something my father said to me, once. Ā He said, "I don't want to be just your father anymore. Ā I want to be yourĀ friend." Ā I realize now that, like Lazard said, he doesn't feel his age, either. Ā He's just likeĀ me ... and would probably love to just hang out or talk more, asĀ friends, not just as father/child. Ā It makes me wish that I'd called to talk more, rather than pushing all that to the side to take care of my own life. Ā I think, after this, I will. Ā He wants a friend in me just as much as I want a friend in anyone else.
So, Happy Father's Day to all the fathers/father figures out there, to anyone and everyone who's ever tried to be a father. Ā YouĀ do deserve respect for that, because that's something above and beyond what non-parents do. And it's worth it to have a holiday to remember that.

I tend to assume most times that the average person is really kind at heart, and it's been proven to me time and again. Ā I once had someone anonymously pay for my lunch at a restaurant, completely out of the blue, because I was in SOLDIER. Ā I still don't think I really did anything to deserve it, and there was no way I could thank them in person or ever repay them ... but it still makes me smile.Ā
I want to do the same thing for someone else at some point, someone who might really need it. Ā I just haven't had the chance yet, but I'm looking for it.

PSA: Mary Sues.
So Iāve been seeing a post thatās been going around on my dash lately that refutes the existence of Mary Sues entirely. While it makes a lot of good points, what it should be saying is that the term āMary Sueā is thrown around so readily that it doesnāt have the same meaning as itās supposed to, not that Mary Sues do not exist.
Mary Sues exist. That is all there is to it. I will say, yes, the term is thrown around wildly, mainly towards any female character, despite the fact that the male counterpart ā commonly known as a Marty Stu or a Gary Stu ā does exist. But this isnāt a post about blatant sexism.
To give some background information for those of you who donāt know, the term āMary Sueā was coined in 1973 by Paula Smith, in her fanfiction āA Trekkieās Taleā. It actually became quite a huge term and through the 80s and the 90s, female authors would often not include girls in their stories at all out of the fear that their readers would call them a Mary Sue.
āA Trekkieās Taleā was originally satire, but satire has to target something. What is a Mary Sue?
A Mary Sue/Marty Stu is an idealized version of the writer. It is always a self-insert(and yes, it contributes a lot to the hatred of self-inserts), only they are more beautiful and perfect and everyone loves them and they have some sort of deep connection to the protagonist or deuteragonist of a series, whether it be their lover, relative, or apprentice, or whatever else. You can look at some different types here who donāt explicitly fit the definition given right there but are still Sues.
If you would like to encounter a Mary Sue, go ahead and read something like Twilight. And Iām sorry to all Twilight fans, but Bella is a Mary Sue. You could easily get away with reading 50 Shades of Grey to the same effect.
Or you could just go read My Immortal.
(Sidenote: And for those of you who like Kingdom Hearts, Those Lacking Spines is a fantastic satire fic targeting fanfiction tropes of all kinds, focusing primarily on the prevalence of personalities being completely fucked over and ignored for the sake of ~teh yaoizz~, but there is a portion on Mary Sues and itās altogether a pretty enjoyable read.)
Mary Sues and Marty Stus are all over the place, but the terms are used so willy-nilly that not a lot of people know one when they see one. I hope this helps you in identifying a Mary Sue.
For examples of characters who arenāt Mary Sues, please look at the vast majority of every single character out there. (I can name several off the top of my head that have been called Mary Sues! Lots of characters from Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts, I mean. Youāve got Tifa, and Cloud himself, and Kairi. Then Naruto fans like to scream about how Sakura is a Mary Sue just because she likes Sasuke and itās like honey she aināt perfect and he donāt like her back so shut yo mouth. Iāve for some reason never seen a Homestuck character described as a Mary Sue, not even Hussieās self-insert or the Condesce or Bec Noir. Thereās a lot more but this tangent is getting too long and Iām sure you get the idea.)
Also, to wrap it up, not all self-inserts are Mary Sues. I, personally and admittedly, am kind of wary of them because I know from experience how many are, but the biggest reason is that Iām just plain not comfortable bringing my roleplay outside of the land of fiction. Butā¦ I have seen self-inserts done well, and I do think you should give them a chance or ten before you call it quits.
Same with any other character.
Not everyone is a Mary Sue, though they do exist, and you all are the people who have to know and understand that.
Please be smart with your terminology and donāt throw it around whenever it conveniences you or you donāt like a character. Iāve known so many people who are afraid of making OCs or RPing or writing in general because they donāt want to make a Mary Sue.
And thatās because of people improperly using the term.
Yāall should just fucking relax and have fun I swear to god. Thatās all that fucking matters. If you have fun playing a or playing with a Mary Sue, then cool!! You do that! If you like self-inserts, yeah!! You have fun! If you like anything else, just chill the fuck out and have a good time and stop worrying about shit so much!
But if you wrongly accuse people of being Mary Sues, you are part of the problem, and you need to sit the fuck down.

I disagree only on one point. Ā I argue that Mary Sues areĀ notĀ always a self-insert.Ā They are commonly associated with self-inserts, but possess qualities that are independent of that,Ā such as poor characterization/perfect abilities/etc. (check out my other post here). Ā It's a combination of these qualities that creates a character worthy of the title of Mary Sue. Ā For a simple description, think "wish-fulfillment." Ā If you've created the character with the focus on fulfilling whatever desires you have, then you may be dealing with a Mary Sue. Ā Focus instead on plot, conflict, and story, and internalize those concepts, so you don't stray into the Mary Sue realm. Ā Have conflicts drive your character, and have your character respond in a way that attempts to drive the plot (an effort at forging one's own destiny, whether or not it ultimately proves to be successful). Ā Don't be afraid to let your character fail.
As an example of a Mary Sue that most of you might know, take Bella from Twilight, as mentioned in the reblog above. Ā Why exactly does she qualify as a Mary Sue? Ā You can name many characteristics, but the two that jump out to me the most in viewing the movies were: Ā 1. That she fails to makeĀ anyĀ decisions to control her own future - she is incredibly passive and simply lets everything happen to her, particularly in the first movie (very uninteresting in terms of characterization); Ā and 2. That, despite her doingĀ nothing to cause anything to happen or not happen, everyone becomes obsessed with her - for no good reason. Ā She has no abilities, personality, or characteristics to attract anyone, let alone Edward or Jacob, yet they're extremely interested in her. Ā In Edward's case, the excuse of her "special" blood is given, which is a classic example of a generic Mary Sue: Ā that singular, special something about the character, which they cannot control, that causes the hero to become infatuated with them, and not because of anything they've actually done to attract the hero's attention.
In Bella's defense (or at least the author's), she was specifically written to be a generic character to allow the reader to essentially step into her shoes and become that character. Ā She was the Mary Sue for everyone's self-insert. Ā That's probably why the Twilight series ended up being so successful (well, in addition to the whole vampire/werewolf "hotness" going on). Ā But if you want to create aĀ good character, that's exactly whatĀ not to do. Ā Give your character some attitude, some spunk, some opinions, something that they can disagree on. Ā Make your character aĀ source of events, not merely aĀ targetĀ of events. Ā People want characters toĀ act ... not just to sit there like a bump on a log. Ā Strive forĀ realism. Ā Sure, youĀ can have a completely passive character. Ā But are they really going to become the focus of the story's events, if they continue to do nothing? Ā A passive character will most likely be forced to ultimatelyĀ act in the face of so much pressure ... or simply be crushed, and the story will move on to someone else.
With a Mary Sue, you risk not only your character not being taken seriously, butĀ everyone aroundĀ your character, especially in fanfiction. Ā If you stay true to your fandom characters, they will help to either beat the Mary Sue out of your character, or leave your character behind. Ā If they don't, then most likely your beloved fandom characters have just become OOC.

a writer is not their character; their character may be an asshole, but the writer may not be
someone else roleplaying the same canon character as you should never be compared to you or another because you are each your own portrayal ā thus you are each unique and have your own merits as the character in question
someone using an āoverusedā face claim does not make them any less of a roleplayer or writer nor does it negate degrees of āqualityā
some writers may be slow because they have real life issues or maybe their muse for their character comes and goes, or perhaps their internet connection is faulty
as a writer you can pick and choose whichever threads you have the muse for whenever youād like ā it is your blog and your character, only you dictate as much, never let a person make you feel bad for that
do not enforce a ship or push for smut, let things flow and they will be magical
if you worry you are being ignored? you probably arenāt, the other writer just may not have the muse for your thread or maybe they are simply too busy
