I never really understood the toxic positivity accusations. Yusho doesn't seem like the type of person who thinks you should never show any negative emotions (when he sees Yuya crying in the throne room, he makes an appeal to Leo instead of telling Yuya to stop). His advice was always given with the qualifier of "here's what you should do if you want to change your situation," and he's correct, because if you freeze up you're at the mercy of your circumstances and whatever anyone else wants to do to you.

The "smile when you want to cry" thing is based on IRL therapy techniques (EMDR, DBT, pendulation) intended to pull you out of fight/flight/freeze/fawn trauma responses. It's not about never acknowledging when things are bad, it's about pulling you out of black and white thinking and reminding yourself of your own agency when you're overwhelmed, which Yuya really struggles with. And if Yusho hadn't disappeared, he probably would've given Yuya better explanations as he grew old enough to understand them.

Also, dialectical thinking is what allows Yuya to accept himself and his DID in the final arc of the show. He is Yuya, AND he is Z-arc, AND he is the other Yu-boys, all at the same time. He's able to learn that being his full self doesn't mean losing his Yuya-ness because he'd been primed from a young age to accept impossible contradictions.

Like, maybe you could argue that Yuya was still in the relying on his parents to solve his problems phase when he was 11 and shouldn't have been learning about this yet, and there's some truth to that, but for adults especially this is something everyone should be learning.

This is literally a point that Julia Serano makes in "Whipping Girl." She points to the fact that marginalized people have to understand the privileges and struggles that those who are held above them in society have, and their own marginalization, better than the people above them in the social heirachy do in order to survive.

Women generally understand the role that men and women play in patriarchy better than men generally do, and trans women in general understand the role that cis women, cis men, and ourselves play in cissexualarchy(? for lack of a better term) better than cis women and cis men generally do. Because we have to in order to survive this world. Cis people don't have to understand it at the level that we do, because its made for them.

I know that this is an important and necessary step in developing media literacy, but it frustrates me how stuck people get on needing media to be literally the communist manifesto or a perfect roadmap for navigating abuse.

Legend of Korra and Yugioh Arc-V are two excellent shows with terrible reputations in part because they criticise wealth inequality without advocating for a working class revolution. And like, anyone who's watched those shows should know how jarring it'd be for them to go in that direction.

They're both shows about how intergenerational trauma can't be fixed with even more trauma and brute force, and instead requires emotional intelligence and de-escalation so people feel safe enough to heal and make positive changes. The desperation and beliefs about power that would lead them to think they can and should fix society overnight is shown to inspire their worst decisions and dehumanize themselves. They're psychological stories, not Political™.

Digital Circus and Steven Universe are also great shows, but so much of the discourse revolves around how they aren't about "holding abusers accountable." Some characters have lingering trauma and the characters that caused it don't read out a list of every thing they did wrong before kneeling and asking for forgiveness and/or punishment. Some characters are worse than others but treated the same regardless. The relationships are messy and often unfair.

But that's not necessarily a flaw. Those stories are about trying to find peace and happiness in an unfair world, and the messiness is part of it. You won't get catharsis or justice for everything that's done to you, but that doesn't mean it's not worth it to try and move towards quality.

Like I said, it's a necessary developmental step to be a contrarian about the things you watch, questioning the narratives and thinking about what could've been done differently. But it's a step to be moved on from eventually. If you don't circle back round to meeting a story where it's at, you'll never enjoy anything as much as you could, and will eventually stop being able to see what it was trying to say in the first place

My issue with this kind of thing is never the criticism itself - critique and analysis is important after all - but with the proposed solutions.

Because it's never about working with the story to make a more cohesive message, tweaking the writing or plot points to get a point across better - it's always... "lets remove anything I find undesirable from the media in entirety."

Re: Korra - When people critique book 1, a lot of the times they're not asking for the anti-capitalist, anti-imperialist, or anti-industrialist themes to be expanded on. They're saying the elements that could potentially be used to discuss them - Republic City, poverty, post war politics - should be REMOVED ENTIRELY. Which makes no sense to me.

How are you supposed to have conversations in the series about industrialization and colonization if... you remove all evidence of those things existing from the fictional world in question? A lot of people were mad that the world after ATLA wasn't some beautiful communist utopia, where everyone is class conscious, new airbenders immediately embrace an extinguished culture, and mixed children have perfectly evenly distributed cultural heritage.

Does that sound great? Sure. But WHY on Earth would any of that happen? And more importantly, HOW would it make for stories of substance??

The annoying thing is that that's exactly how Korra feels. She's confused that the post-Ozai world isn't Fine and that everyone isn't Nice, and keeps looking for easy solutions that'll restore her sense of comfort in the world. Those people's feelings are what the show is about but they don't engage enough to notice

like. its pretty god damn hard not to draw a direct line between the way people have reacted to jax and callout culture and the unpersoning of "problematic" transfems. if you are upset that someone still reaches out to Jax, that she's still treated with human dignity, that her story was heard and her pain acknowledged, then it seems very very likely to me that once you decide that a real person- especially, say, a transfem- is An Abuser, that person does not deserve peace, friends, or dignity. that you are full throat willing to misgender a trans woman once your chest is filled with righteous indignation. the refusal to sympathise with a problematic tranny- the anger at being asked to! we see that. and we wonder how little it takes for you to turn that on us.
