What I find infinitely fitting in the context of the romantic subtext between Eva and Ryland in the movie - which exists, ultimately, to be subverted but it is there in deliberate imagery and the order of scenes - is the fact that this woman is wearing a ring that within her cultural framework is on the finger where you wear a wedding band.
This is a movie that took no prisoners with costuming, so this must be considered very deliberate.
It's frequently visible (#mycoffees) but never more prominent than in the karaoke scene after she gently deflected his bid for "camaraderie" and rerooted it in the direction of faith. It is close to her face while she is holding the microphone, singing at him, with the prolongued eye contact that can mean anything or nothing.
The ring is never acknowledged. The same way you never actually have to acknowledge the romantic subtext that leads nowhere.
For all we know, in the movie universe she could be married or widowed, but we never find out. It is never addressed. But as soon as you consider the romantic subtext at all, it becomes actually relevant in how it's entirely ignored whenever Ryland (arguably, subtly) scratches on that door.
Because within that context it is clear that this woman has a prior, larger commitment that she is not making a secret of.
And I kind of love how that transports the same message about their relationship under the surface that we see play out in the open after the explosion.
Because her choice was always already made. She can never belong to anything other than her commitment to saving Earth and humanity and every single lamb outside of Ryland Grace.
The love story was never going to be between them, because it (one of them) is already between her and humanity.
