This moment: Wei Wuxian walking into the jingshi with Lan Xichen’s plea ringing in his ears, and seeing Lan Zhan, this strange, quiet man with his contraband alcohol and his vulnerable, curved shoulders and soft hair and precise hands and, and fathomless, world-altering devotion. This tiny set of frames is when I think Wei Wuxian, the poor ass, first begins to guess the nature of the current beneath Lan Zhan’s placid surface. For years, he’s been protective of his friend’s dignity, his reputation, certainly his body, but I don’t think it’s ever really crossed his mind that he might have the right, or the responsibility, to protect Lan Zhan’s heart. Zewu-jun has just informed him otherwise.

On the steps of Koi Tower, Lan Zhan declared himself publicly and politically: This is my zhiji; his word is my word, his honour is my honour. It was an act of love, and Wei Wuxian certainly recognized it as such, but even moreso, it was an act of justice. It was Hanguang-jun ablaze, sword in hand, finally sticking the landing on an oath he made when he was seventeen.

That’s one kind of love. The love he shows in the privacy of the jingshi, in the simple act of pouring a cup of wine, is different altogether. It’s personal, not political. Righteousness and moral accord have nothing much to do with it. It’s purely and simply romantic. At the tower, he says, I’m with you. At the jingshi, he just says, I love you.

Usually, when Wei Wuxian enters a space and sees Lan Zhan waiting for him, he breaks into an affectionate smile, but now he’s serious, almost shy. His own heart is doing something to him in reply—unfolding just enough to tuck this new responsibility carefully inside, even if, as of yet, he can scarcely look at it straight on, has no idea what to do with it, nor how he could possibly be worthy.
