Something that just occurred to me is I think people compare Tenna’s fear of being thrown away with Spamton’s living out of the Trash Zone and go “wow that thing Tenna was afraid of actually happened to Spamton and it happened to him for years!” While they are miles of severity apart and it makes me feel insane.

Yes, Spamton lost everyone he thought cared about him. Yes he faced homelessness and poverty for years and that’s terrible for him and that trauma probably led to a fair amount of his present behavior. However. Living in a dump is not at all what would happen from Tenna being thrown away.

The game likes to reiterate that Tenna being thrown away is effectively dying. Being on the street “in the junk folder” vs Literally Being Hauled Out Of Your Home To Be Destroyed Because You Weren’t Good Enough At Making Your Family Happy levels of difference.

Neither of them are pure evil or perfect characters but this particular comparison bothers the hell out of me because it really isn’t one.

To my knowledge this is all he’s said about it, but the repeated emphasis on “I’ve been Alone” plus how intensely he seems to fear going back to being unplugged makes me think whatever it was, was very unpleasant.

I will never be over how excited Rocky was to get Grace's laptop. I mean, if I went on a mission because my planet was dying and then I met an alien who helped me save it and he also gave me the collected knowledge of his species in an advanced little machine, like, he gave that to ME. ALL THE KNOWLEDGE HIS SPECIES HAS GATHERED SO FAR, sure, they don't know how to turn Xenon into a solid but they know about relativity and radiation and movies and so many amazing things I could have never imagined before I went on this trip. And he just handed it to me because we're FRIENDS, I didn't even have to ask him for it, he just did it. Without hesitation. He didn't even tell me "This is for your planet.", he said "This is for you." Like, hello? Can you imagine coming home after decades, your crew is dead, but you made it and you don't just bring the solution for the whole "the planet is dying" thing, you bring the collected knowledge of an advanced alien species?!?!? And it was a personal gift.

The happy little dance and grabby hands were fully appropriate.

One of my favorite things about loving someone or developing a closeness or fondness towards someone is also loving and developing a fondness for the things they care about. When you learn to see the world in a new way, or you learn to appreciate the things you’ve previously overlooked, or they become your excuse to get into an interest you always thought was cool but thought you didn’t have time for. When a connection makes your world bigger and warmer and fuller and more beautiful.
