Slightly related, I remember several years ago (though I donât remember who or where) someone saying instead of writing fanfics, why donât people write spec scripts instead.
That bothered me greatly, but I couldnât put my feelings into words. And while over time, I came to understood why it bothered me -- they were dismissing fanfiction because they didnât see it as being productive enough. They saw it as a âdead endâ and felt it wasnât worth peopleâs time or efforts because it couldnât go any further. They thought people should turn their efforts into something that could potentially be âmore productive.â
They saw fanfiction as a âwasteâ because thereâs no result aside from the finished piece; so, therefore people should redirect their energies and efforts into something that gets them somewhere - like a career in writing or whatever.
But this whole post just put my thoughts and feelings into actual coherent words.
Fanfiction is a hobby; people do it because they enjoy it and itâs fun.
Donât get me wrong, I think you can definitely improve upon your writing with writing fanfic, because writing is writing (though keep in mind itâs a different medium than books and or scripts), and maybe you do want your work to build up to something more (you do you), but thatâs not everyoneâs goal.
In fact, thatâs not the majority of peoplesâ goals when it comes to fanfiction.
Itâs exactly like knitting or any other hobby.
This attitude reminds me of when people roll their eyes at someone elseâs hobby, because theyâre âwasting their time;â and they should something practical or useful like learn another language.
Sometimes people do things for no other reason than to just do the thing. Life shouldnât be an endless assembly line of productivity, where everything you do amounts to something that can be âcommodifiedâ (so to speak).
Obviously, thereâs nothing wrong with learning another language (thatâs a great skill to have and can definitely be fun and a hobby too), I just used that as an example because itâs always the response I hear when someone is dismissing the work someone put into something the other person finds to be pointless and or useless.
