IMPORTANT HEADS UP FOR HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS!

There is a company called “Vector” that sends out “work opportunity” letters in the mail for graduating seniors. It’s a scam. They promise a nice $17 an hour for zero experience which should be a red flag. It’s a multi level marketing scheme that preys on kids trying to make money for college and it’s gross. If you get one of these letters in the mail, just toss it in the recycle. Some of you may have heard of this or have already received one of these in the mail, but I just wanted to post about it just in case!

they did this shit to me too but they had no information about the company anywhere on the flyers and the website for applying was just a google form which should have been a red flag but basically they wait until you fill out the google form and then reveal that they are Vector Marketing. their scheme is they make you buy like $100+ worth of knives and tell you to sell them all to your family members in exchange for a cut of the profit. i ignored them once i found out but they started like sending flyers to my mom somehow

actually i love growing older and learning how i work as a person like realizing what kinds of fabrics feel best on my skin or what brand of yogurt i like best or how I want to be touched. watching myself change, enjoying brussel sprouts when I used to hate them as a child, understanding why I got angry in that one conversation 10 years ago… there are so many mysteries inside me that i have yet to unravel and there will always be more and sometimes i think maybe its all worth it

By the way, the way that No Child Left Behind impacts the trade worker shortage in the US is because in about 2002 shop classes, home ec classes, auto classes, etc, had their funding diverted into teaching kids how to pass standardized tests so that the schools could continue to pay teachers and keep the library open.

It’s hard to figure out that you might be interested in plumbing as a career when you’ve spent twelve years learning how to pass multiple choice tests and having ceramics and band as the only available electives.

This is one place where I actually WILL do the generational thing and say that Millennials and Gen Z got completely fucked in a way that older generations didn’t.

It’s actually really fucking hard to repair a cabinet when you’ve never had a shop class. It’s really goddamned difficult to learn everything about car maintenance on your own through youtube videos instead of in a semester of auto shop. It’s really goddamned difficult to figure out you want to be a plumber or an electrician or a welder when you are eighteen years old, have been taught to pass tests and cajoled into applying for college, and you’ve never handled an air compressor or used a socket wrench.

You know all of those household things that middle class Boomers like to mock Millennials for not knowing and having to go on YouTube for instructions? They learned all of that in school–in Home Economics, in Shop, in various other classes. And then they all voted for lower taxes and cut the curriculums when they became adults, and the funding dried up. NCLB was just the final blow.

In fairness, a lot of them learned those skills from their parents. NCLB did not cut off that avenue of skills education.

Hm, I wonder if the decades of increasing difficulty of supporting a whole household with only forty hours a week of income has anything to do with why so many people haven’t passed those skills on to their children.
