i read this thread on arlong park about how the animation isnāt necessarily any better in wano, but the photography direction is at a much higher caliber than whole cake or reverie (a new department took over the role with wano.) which is basically compositing and line effect. the animation isnāt any different but the way itās presented with different effects on top of it is what makes wano look so much better than the last few arcs.Ā
to demonstrate this better hereās a screenshot from dressrosa that i edited to look more like wano and a wano screenshot i edited to look more like dressrosa
bottom left is original dressrosa and top right is original wano
if the animation and people who make one piece look and feel like it does interests you like it does me hereās a link to the arlongpark thread i mentioned in this post
it catalogues almost every key animator and director of each episode. it goes into detail for a lot of pre time skip stuff how each key animator differs from each other and how you can tell who did what episode. i espically find naoki tate an interesting animator as a lot of his stuff looks off model to the untrained eye but he focuses more on fluidity of action and making movement look good not if the characters look exactly like they always should.Ā
I hope you donāt mind me jumping in here op but I just wanted to share some key animators who have been shining in Wano and been doing some fantastic work! (sorry for the quality of some gifs)
Katsumi Ishizuka: This guy is INSANE. Heās been working on the series for years, but his animation style has slowly advanced. He likes to use speed lines, and quite strong ones at that. His use of smears also allows for more fluid movement. His bold action and speed lines usually makes it somewhat easy to spot him. He also likes to make character close ups shake quite dramatically to create greater intensity to a scene. Also all of the old school Luffy final blow scenes? All him.
Tu Yong-ce: A younger animator, heās very fast and works efficiently. Usually sticking to the character sheets, it can be a lot harder to spot him in comparison to that of the other animators here based on his artwork alone. His timing is quite snappy, with his shapes for effects also being a key aspect to his work. Theyāre quite sharp, and shaped in a recognisable way. He has also created all the transformation scenes in Wano thus far.
Yoshikazu Tomita: He has quite a unique style and is very easy to spot, and is one of my favourites. He makes the characters somewhat like liquid, with timing being somewhat slow yet smooth. His shading recently has consisted of using blacks and many layers of shading, and usually has very strong action scenes. Jagged shapes are also usually used on his shading as well as his characters. He hasnāt done any scenes really for Wano as of yet, only really up the waterfall.
Takashi Kojima: Iāll be honest, I donāt know too much about him in comparison to that of the others here. But he has done a few action scenes in Wano, with his hair having a lot more individual strands and his intense use of expressions. His effects work is quite blobby.
And even ones that havenāt shown up as of yet/havenāt work on the main series in a while
Naoki Tate: One of, if not my personal favourite animators. Heās simplistic designs and lack of shading helps create fluidity, focusing on the use of smears to help accentuate his movements, especially during action. Most of his animation uses blobs and shapes to create that sense of movement. His character acting is incredibly strong, making the characters ooze with personality. Many people think his work is messy and/or ugly. His style is very loose! He hasnāt worked on the main series for a while (working on Dragon Ball), however he did work on Stampede.
Naotoshi Shida: You might not know him by name but you have more than likely seen his work and noticed theĀ āupgrade in qualityā. His movement is very liquid like, with somewhat sharp shapes being used as shading on his characters. Usually consists of a few layers of shading, and highlights. A lot of crazy camera work is usually used in his animations, with intense expressions, especially in the mouths.Ā
Ryo Onishi: Similar to that of Tate, he uses a simplistic style however itās more blobby and soft. He also has very strong character acting, making the characters move in a way that also expresses what theyāre feeling without the use of voice. Again like Tate, he wasnāt worked on the main series in a while (has been working on Dragon Ball) but he also did work on Stampede. If youāve seen Stampede then That scene where the animation just goes fucking insane?? Pretty sure thatās Onishi
These are just some of the wonderful animators that work at Toei! It is not the notion of Toei, or anime company,Ā āputting budget into itā that upgrades the quality in episodes/scenes but rather the hard working animators. Schedule is a very important factor that allows these, and many others, to have the opportunity to present their skills.Ā
