(Just Not Today) - Angst Edition

Continental drift

After a rough breakup with his fiance, Suna, Osamu decides to stay with his brother for a bit to clear his head. Along the way he finds himself falling madly in love with someone new. There's just one problem. It's Sakusa Kiyoomi. Atsumu's boyfriend of over 5 years, who notably, does not return his feelings and finds the entire situation incredibly uncomfortable. The rift it causes between him and his brother seems irreparable but the worst part is when he has to crawl back home to Suna and finds that he genuinely regrets their breakup and wants to get back together. Osamu can't find it in himself to re-accept Suna's feelings or play pretend when he simply doesn't love him anymore. It feels like he's been cast out to sea with nothing left to cling to.

Faded Eggshells

Kiyoomi feels like he's been walking on eggshells his entire life. He's become a master at tiptoeing and skillfully dodging any danger that comes his way. Or at least what his brain perceives as danger. What happens though when the danger disappears, the eggshell ridden path suddenly fades, and he realizes he's forgotten how to walk with his feet flat on the ground.

An exploration of anxiety, ptsd, and grief.

500 ways in which Osamu slowly breaks Suna's heart until he realizes he can't pick up the pieces anymore. The sand slipping between his fingers still cuts just as deep as the glass shards of the past, and yet he's found he's used to the dull ache that comes with rejection. At the end of the day he'll still lay his head next to Osamu, still hold his hand, still tell him he loves him. He'll still pour his entire heart into a cup that Osamu is intent on shattering day after day.

At least until the day comes where Osamu breaks him for good.

Kiyoomi's therapist suggests exposure therapy to help him become more acclimated to touching people and being ok with germs. What kind of friend would Atsumu be if he didn't help?

Backwards Ass Town

After the Olympics, Kiyoomi and Atsumu are a little disappointed that they went all the way to California and didn't really get to experience much outside of the Olympic village. As such, the pair decides to go back to do some real exploring and site seeing. Having pretty much zero clue about how big the state actually is or how the United States actually works, they end up right smack in the middle of California in some backwards ass town called Fresno. Everything they wanted to do is hours away (at best) and even though they're both pretty good at speaking English, it really feels like the people here are speaking an entirely different language sometimes. Thus begs the question, what the fuck does one even do in this backwards ass town???

Atsumu has gotten a lot of admiration over the years but it seems all of it has been for his skill and dedication on the court. Off the court? Not so much. When he starts receiving love notes in his locker, complementing something other than his ability to play volleyball, it stirs something in him.
