Leave it the the Nalu fandom to get me out of another hiatus.
I wasnāt planning to make a post about this particular drama. This was part of another post I was already working on for some other time.Ā
However, Mashimaās been to France again and did another interview over the weekend. In response to a question, he said that Natsu and Lucy consider each other to be more than friends. If you were only listening to most of fandom, youād think that Mashima confirmed that Nalu was absolutely going to happen. All he did was say that Natsu and Lucy consider each other to be friends.
I know that sounds like a big deal, but it shouldnāt be. Mashimaās already said as much in the past. Someone pointed out that he said that in the same afterword he mentioned not writing Nalu as romantic. He likes writing them as more than friends, but not necessarily romantic. In fact, he clarified that as his vew a few days later.
I appreciate Mashimaās consistency about Natsu and Lucyās relationship. In fact, Iāve come to appreciate it over the years. Nalu was always going to be popular as a romantic ship. However, Iāve had fun playing with the idea of them working together, without having to consider romance.
To be honest, I donāt blame fandom for going crazy over this kind of thing. Mashima will draw Natsu and Lucy looking at each other, and fans will wait for their proposal in the upcoming chapter. This is something Iāve come to expect from fandom.
For now, though, excuse my skepticism over this translating into Nalu becoming a canon couple. Until Mashima changes course in canon, Iām not budging on my views or expectations on the ship.

Fine, let's run through the list.
Has either Natsu or Lucy had a moment in canon where they acknowledge genuine enthusiastic romantic feelings for each other?
We've gotten moments fans have argued hint towards the ship happening. Obviously, fandom is going to skew towards those moments showing Mashima favoring their ship.Ā
However, I'm losing patience with fandom over this point.Ā
This series is two decades old. We've gotten more chapters of Fairy Tail material than most normal shonen series run for.
Has Nalu gotten a moment like Orihimeās five lives speech in Bleach?
Has Nalu gotten a moment like Hinata saying she's saving Naruto because she loves him?
Has Nalu gotten a moment like Benio losing herself to corruption but being centered by realizing she loves Rokuro?
Has Nalu gotten a moment like Haru realizing the reason he still fights is that he loves Elie?
Has Nalu gotten a moment like Gajeel saying he wants to protect Levy?
I could go on, but you get the point.
Admittedly, every ship doesn't need to have a moment like this to be canon. Bluebell happened without a moment like this. However, I'm sick and tired of hearing that Nalu is a surefire ship when we're still waiting for either to outright say they even like the other person twenty years into the series.
I can't be convinced that Mashima, who is hyper sensitive to fandomās wishes in multiple other aspects, isn't making a conscious decision not to confirm Nalu. In the same interview, he said that heās aware of what fans want, but that isnāt affecting how heās writing them. Thatās a bigger stain on Nalu than fans might want to give credit. Especially considering he was fine ending the original series without giving them that kind of catharsis.
I can imagine a world where Nalu happens. However, it wouldn't be the grand fantasy fans want or expect. It would happen without incident. It certainly won't be the well developed ship fandom has deluded itself into believing Nalu is or will be.
Could we get another sequel to further extend this whole thing? It's not out of the cards. It's not like we expected the sequel we got. However, it would be foolish to assume such a sequel is a given. Even more to assume that it will absolutely confirm a ship ten or more years after the end of the current sequel.
As a Nalu fan I canāt really disagree with this.
I sincerely hope Nalu does happen in canon but I personally donāt think itāll happen in any type of grand romantic way, or even how the other confirmed ships in the series have sailed at this point.
I wish all Nalu fans were this mature. The good news is you guys have a lot of fanon content but I definitely understand wishing for it to be canon. Hopefully one day the culture within the fairytail fandom will shift to Nalu fans making peace with their fanon only status and being kind to other natsu or Lucy shippers despite differences in opinion.
At the end of the day, fairytail is beautiful and the bond between Natsu and Lucy is something deep and beautiful. I personally choose to see it as friendship - but for those who ship it thatās okay too!

Canonically, Natsu does not see Lucy as an exclusive love interest due to the fact his subconscious mind shows sheās on an equal level with familial relationships such as Wendy who he interprets as a sibling like bond. So in my opinion mashimaās words still hold true to the fact he sees Nalu as more than friends less than lovers - and in Fairytail style that would be nakama or what we would call family.

As someone that loves Nalu she was literally never a threat to them, sheās actually extremely supportive of them??? Hereās her acknowledging their bond by telling Lucy to stay close to Natsu bc he is stronger when heās around people he loves and trusts.
Obviously Lisanna and Natsu were close when they were little, and she really enjoyed teasing him too but they were also literal children so idk why people felt so weird about theyāre wholesome little bond or like it was a threat to Natsu and Lucyās bond as adults? š
ALSO something that I donāt see mentioned is Lisanna probably knew for awhile the kind of bond Lucy and Natsu would grow into because after she ādiedā and was in Edolas, she met Edolas Lucy before Earthland Lucyā¦ which means she probably already had an idea that Natsu and Lucy would be close. (also further proof that it was always going to nalu in the end, bc in all universes they really do end up together)
At the Grand Magic games when everyone is trying to find someone to partner up with, only for Lucy to end up crashing into Natsu (ultimately pairing them together) and Lisanna giggles. Itās obvious to me that she finds them cute and humorous together. Like sheās a supportive sweetheart and you guys need to be a lot nicer to her character š also Hiro Mashima has literally mentioned at his panels that Lisanna is way too nice of a girl for Natsu and I AGREEEE. Natsu and Lucyās banter and chaotic energy together is literally what makes them so great together and a fan favorite, and clearly Lisanna ships it too
Lastly, Iāve also seen people say that they hate her bc she didnāt add anything to the story once she got brought back. Like yes, Hiro Mashima brought her back and didnāt do much for her character BUT that still doesnāt make sense to me for that to be a reason to hate her for thatā¦that seems silly to me
Donāt get me wrong I can understand the frustration of bringing her back bc I do feel like it takes away from the whole point of loss and living with it and how that shaped Elfman, MiraJane, and Natsu (I mean unfortunately Natsu still learns this lesson with Igneel later on soā¦) but also why canāt yall just be happy that Elfman and MiraJane have their lil sibling back and can be a trio again like DAMN lol
Anyway this is just my perspective, at the end of the day ship who ever you guys want! I was just coming from the perspective of trying to understand why Lisanna always got so much hate and it always felt people just simply didnāt like her bc they viewed her as ācompetitionā towards Lucy but it never gave that š Mashima intentionally never wrote a love triangle between them but somehow the fandom created one anyway š

It was at an event I think, @yashirosukes has spoken about it before but when Mashima was asked to then pick between Nalu and Nali after being asked that he backtracked and said that was a difficult question to answer. I think he held up Nalu to
1. Appease the fans and
2. Them as a pairing of main characters, not romantically.
However when asked the same question with Nali involved it became less a question about character duo dynamics and more a ship question and Mashima then backtracked
