"oh, no. It's unavailable."

Highlights from Andy's week away- I've been traveling more than Andy for work this year, and he was overdue for some writing time. We've had quite the week at home: we closed on our new house! (Walt slept the whole hour+, despite all the documents I had to sign twice.) Charlie came down with a fever overnight Friday, so we are missing Special Olympics Summer Games today, which is a big bummer. But we are looking forward to dad's return, and getting the keys to the house tomorrow! Big week of packing and moving this upcoming week.

Walt's math skills continue to impress. Yesterday he made these odd numbers out of Play-Doh. The cross on the seven cracks me up. We didn't teach him that! Actually we haven't really taught him anything. He just KNOWS it. This morning he asserted that an eleven-sided shape is a HENDECAGON. Walt likes to count his toes, and if he stubs a toe, he'll tell us he only has 9 toes. Tonight I asked him randomly, "If there are ten people, how many toes do they have?" He thought for minute and he restated the question for himself: "If there are ten people who have feet and they have the right number of toes, how many toes are there?" He answered his own question, "One Hundred!" And our jaws hit the floor. Ellen followed up and asked "What if there are nine people with the right number of toes?" Walt answered "ninety," like it was so easy. This kid is 3, folks, and he's answering multiplication story problems.
Fun at the Maple Syrup Festival. Charlie's favorite rides were the yoyo (the high spinning one), the fun slide, and the dragon wagon roller coaster. His least favorite was the fun house. He bumped into wall after wall in the house of mirrors but still wanted to do it over and over.

Charlie had so much fun on the “Fun Slide” at the Maple Syrup Festival in nearby Shepherd, Michigan, on Saturday that he woke up dreaming about it last night. Here he is in action. He probably went up and down this slide at least a dozen times (and even raced this same little girl a couple times). Each time he had to climb all those steps while carrying a big gunny sack.

More Walt chatter
Walt has been talking up a storm today. Here are some favorites: (Overheard on the baby monitor after putting him down for a nap) "Oh, no I have to go to sleep now. But I can't go to sleep. I need a timeout from this nap. I wish I could go downstairs." "It's 3:16. What do we do at 3:16, dad?" Me: I don't know Walt, what do we do at 3:16? "Wait for 3:17!"
(takes two bites out of an apple, puts it down) My apple is ridiculous. I need to be in time out. (Puts self in time out.)
Walt
I can say with certainty that I never used my magnadoodle to draw elements at any age, much less 5. Ha!
Well, we found Walt's next interest... Barely made it to anything else in the Midland Center "Hall of Ideas."
What may seem like an unremarkable pic of a 5 year old eating a PBJ is nothing short of miraculous to me! Years of scaffolding up to eating a whole sandwich (without cutting it into tiny bites) finally came together today. He has excitedly eaten TWO today. Yay, Charlie!
Happy Super Bowl Sunday. (Punch!)
Oh, the joys of lunch subtraction. He started with 10 orange segments and joyfully ate/subtracted all the way down to 0. 😂
Walt’s birthday party, part 1!
More pics tomorrow - wanted to get a batch out tonight for Zizza and the other diehard sqwehrman readers. :)
We had a GREAT time, and are so thankful for all the friends who came! Extra special thanks to our friend Dani, who helped with party execution and took all but one of the above photos - couldn’t have pulled this off without her!
