Now is a strange time to work in the arts and I am sure a lot of you are pretty scared. My heart goes out to the entire performing arts community. Please feel free to message me if you need to talk.
I was at a sports ball party and one of my old co-workers asked me if she heard correctly that I was applying for a particular office position. I said yes, and she said, “Oh you don’t want it, it’s a thankless job.” To which another SM friend of mine immediately jumped in and said, “She’s a STAGE MANAGER, she’s used to thankless jobs!”

Ok so like what is an alternative to tumblr here my dudes
So for my show last night the director decided to add a curtain speech with the music director. We got a sub fader for them to give the speech on the apron and a mic for them. Talked about it beforehand and thought we were all totally clear about how that was going to happen.
Top of show comes, the safety speech happens as planned... And no one comes to the stage for the curtain speech. So I tell the ASM on headset to send the director & music director on. Conversation goes like this:
ASM: They’re waiting for you to fly the main drape out.
Me: We’re not flying the main drape out. That is after the speech.
ASM: Okay, they’re on stage and ready for you to fly the main drape out.
Me: We are not flying the main drape out.
ASM: When are we flying the main drape out?
Me: After the speech. We do not have lights programed for before the speech.
ASM: Oh. How are they getting on?
Me:Â They can walk out through the curtain or through the backstage right entrance to the apron.
ASM: They don’t know how to do that.
So the ASM shows them where to go and the speech happens.
Exiting from the stage, they could not find the exits and fumbled around backstage for like three minutes cursing. After they found out where they were, they remembered the mic and started freaking out because they didn’t know that it was muted.
Lesson: Rehearse everything. Even if you think you got it.

So I just got my first SM job (it’s a volunteer community theatre) but I’ve never called cues before! I’m super nervous, especially since it’s a musical and I’m told will have probably around 400 light cues. Any advice?? I’m worried I will mess it up and the director is extremely tough, so I know anything done wrong she will be really mad.
Congratulations on your first SM job! Calling cues the first time can be pretty intimidating, but I promise it’s not bad! In fact, it’s one of my favorite parts of SMing because once you get used to it, it’s extremely calming.
Some advice I have is:
After paper tech, take some time to practice calling your cues, especially with a recording of the music.
Make sure your cues are marked so they can be easily moved. Especially in musicals, placement of cues will change as the show starts to solidify. I usually use Post-It Flags because it allows me to color coordinate the cues and easily move the cues.
If you can, also mark where you will have any standbys and warnings. This is especially helpful when you have a complex sequence because then you can explain to your board ops what will be happening in those sequences.
Avoid using the word GO unless you are actually GOing a cue. For me, when I’m prepping for a GO, I normally call it a gee oh.Â

I know two sets of my neighbors that I know. One of which are my friend’s parents and I greatly enjoy them. Another of which are friends with my dad and I am indifferent to them. They also don’t know I live here yet. There’s also this one kid that is always dribbling his soccer ball in the cul-de-sac by himself. I don’t know him at all, but I want him to have friends.
30. Do you want to get married?
I do not! I actually have plans for my 30th birthday to throw an “not-wedding” party. Everyone will receive save the dates. There will be a registry for gifts. I will wear a fancy ass gown. Some of my closest friends will be invited as my Boss Ass Bitches. And in the invitations I will specify that this is a celebration of me not getting married and that all bad attitudes about that should be left at home.
40. What do you want to do after high school?
Obviously I did not read all of these questions very well. I graduated high school eight years ago, so it’s a little late for this question. I did, however, do what I set out to do after high school, which was theatre.

Black. Because of course.

I was first place in Forensics for a couple of categories and a couple of different levels in high school. My favorite was for Storytelling. The story came from The Fairy’s Mistake by Gail Carson Levine.
I also won Freshman of the Year in college if that means anything.
