When I first heard, nightcore I thought rats were singing it …
Lost Traditions of Sicilian Jews
The following information is paraphrased from the book “Between Scylla and Charybdis: The Jews in Sicily” by Shlomo Simonsohn. I thought it would be interesting to share this as for the most part, no traditions of Sicilian Jewish culture survive into the present day, but some remain in the historical record. The disappearance of these local traditions is likely in part due to rapid assimilation following exile due to the significantly more numerous Sephardic Jews, who generally never wanted to conform, even partially, to local customs. Most of these were heavily contested by local religious authorities, many of which were Sephardic and did not get along with the local community. These are mostly attested in notarial records where Jews would file complaints against the religious authorities for refusing to continue or perform certain local customs.
During mourning, women would scratch their faces until bleeding.
In Ketubot, there was a tradition where new couples would receive a bed as a gift, and in the case of wealthy families, as much as three separate beds.
Christian mimes were regularly employed to perform at Jewish weddings and other community celebrations.
In Palermo, before their wedding ceremony, brides participated in a ceremony called bunbur where the bride is seated on a podium or chair inside the synagogue. At one point religious authorities denied pregnant brides this custom, which caused the community to lodge a formal complaint.
In Palermo, a funerary custom was to bring the newly dead brought in a coffin to the front of the synagogue, where lamentations and eulogies for the deceased would be recited. Sometimes, for those held in high regard, this would be carried out inside the synagogue itself. Then, the coffin would be carried to the cemetery as the cantors would sing the Psalms.
In Palermo, the sandaq (godfather) used to recite three psalms inside the synagogue.
On Yom Kippur and Hoshana Rabba, the hechal were opened and families would come and remain all night, including women, who would kiss the scrolls.
The Shema prayer was loudly recited in the same tradition as in Egypt and Palestine.
On Yom Kippur, the selihot were recited after the main events, and after every prayer Jews prostrated themselves.
In Messina, during weddings after the huppah, the bride would be driven around the Jewish quarter on horseback.
The Jews in Sciacca obtained permission to allow mixed gender dancing.
A funerary tradition in Palermo was heavily contested by religious authorities where a qaddish was recited on the shabbat in the Synagogue 7 days, 40 days, and 1 year after death, regardless of the deceased’s social standing.
How can you look at the finished work of Christ's death, burial, and resurrection and then think you can buy or pray the dead into heaven?
Purgatory is a heterodoxy that originates in legalistic medieval Scholastic philosophy after the Great Schism that abandoned the mystical truth and tradition of theosis doctrine maintained in Orthodoxy, but prayers for the dead absolutely do work and are necessary and have been done since the time of the Apostles. The Emperor Trajan's soul was pulled from Hades to Paradise by the intercessions of a desert monk, for one famous story.
Both sides here really need to read the Church Fathers...
Anyways the penitent thief had no works credited to him beyond a profession of faith in Christ and he was admitted to the kingdom that very day and using big words doesn’t make you or your precious saints any less retarded. Read your Bible or you will die and all the prayers in the world or heaven will not pull your wretched soul from the lake of fire you’re marching towards.
Cringe response. These "retarded" saints who labored and died for Christ are in eternal Paradise while our fates are still up in the air. Please try to remember this sometimes.
Your ancestors became Christian at all by missionary saints who very much believed Orthodox doctrine and worked miracles.
Then a mere 5 centuries ago their later descendants got duped by greedy novels who wanted the first tastes of capitalism by clearing out holy traditions which impeded their Lust for power and profit.
Find me an unbroken Apostolic connection to your teachings. Extra Hard Mode: No claiming "muh Waldensians/Cathars/Paulicians" or weird medieval sex cults you Wiki'd!

c’mon son.
Dig that hole deeper, dumbass
“But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.” - Matt 5:22
From the mouth of Christ Himself. How’s the Sola Scriptura treating you now here, calling me a “dumbass” because you refuse to study?
The Bible fandom gettin' heated tonight
These people used to fight wars over this. Really, Christianity being demoted from state religion to World's Worst Book Club was the best outcome for the rest of us.
Yeah, like, Europe burned for a generation over this disagreement that we see here tonight degenerated to accusations of being "cringe" and ad hominem attacks based on rebloging anime girls.
Hear me out for a minute… (this is an American-specific analysis but probably applies to lots of other places) Radical leftists’ anti-Semitism is, in practice, assimilationist rhetoric against a group of people of immigrant ancestry, who still maintain their cultural identities and customs inside the countries (like the US) that they were raised in. It’s identical in a lot of ways to old school, boring nativism. It *isn’t just about Israel.* We’re not actually supposed to have connections to anyone anywhere outside of the United States; during the 50s, we were scrutinized for ties to the Soviets, and we’ve ALWAYS been scrutinized for ties to any country we’ve left unless there has been some major public genocide (i.e., the Shoah) that provides some kind of justification for asylum. But we have to have practically been killed off within an inch of our collective lives for that to be valid. Jewishness just isn’t supposed to exist *as its own thing* or *as its own identity.* Jews who are white passing, are actually being asked to prioritize their whiteness over their Jewishness, and not in any way discuss anti-Semitism too much. “Jews are white now” is disingenuously used to mean “let’s revise history.” It’s great that we’re not okay with pretending the Shoah didn’t happen, but can we also not pretend that American Jews were treated like hegemonic white people before the 1970s? And that Jews historically didn’t always live in “white” areas? Fuck’s sake, even *census rolls* in some places didn’t count us as white. From what I’ve seen, it seems like Jews who aren’t white, are treated as their visible racial identity first and Jewish second (if at all). (And if you’re Jewish and contribute to this problem, I’m calling you out for it.) When you add those last two things together, the end result is… Jews do not actually exist. Jews are nothing. Jews aren’t supposed to exist. Jews are asked to basically not make any kind of big deal of anything we deal with *as Jews.* We’re not supposed to make our own issues or our customs too visible and we’re not supposed to complain in spaces where there may be structural anti-Semitism. And if we’re too assimilated then our Jewishness doesn’t count enough for us to talk about, but if we’re not, it counts against us as well. It’s not just about not taking up space in Israel, we’re not actually supposed to take up space *anywhere*. We’re not supposed to actually be *visibly* Jewish. And we’re not supposed to be ally to non-white groups either, in any meaningful way that would build solidarity. It’s not just that we’re white, it’s that we’re SUPPOSED to assimilate to a kind of hegemonic whiteness that excludes any kind of actual Jewish identity! We’re presently assumed to be white, Judaism is ~just a religion~, religion is problematic, so we’re supposed to assimilate with mainstream white people. (Or, on the flip side, we’re told that if we’d just become Christian, all of our troubles would just Go Away.) All this and I didn’t even TOUCH the issue of Israel or Zionism. But another thing is that we’re not actually supposed to have a history of any kind that’s distinct from anyone else’s, or ties to any other country. The left treats Jewish people the way that the right stereotypically treats (non European) immigrants in general, in being treated as personally responsible for the actions of their governments. Except that many Jews are able to become invisible in white culture so that is exactly what we are required to do. At the end of the day, we’re supposed to be indistinguishable in every way from white Americans who do not identify as Jewish, and we’re considered responsible for the bad things that hegemonic white Americans have done, even when we’ve been their victims. Congratulations, that’s just ordinary boring 1950s style nativist/assimilationist rhetoric, dressed up as leftism. That’s just full on fucking horseshoe theory right there.
YES YES YES YES YES YES
When I say that, while I would love to see more diversity in representations of Jewishness that reflect the richness of our people, I am NOT here for Goyim constantly insisting that every Jewish character needs to also be “something else” (JoC, LGBTQ+, disabled, etc.) in order for them to be counted under the banner of real representation because in their minds, Jewishness alone does not qualify as an aspect of diversity, THIS IS WHAT I MEAN.
When I say that I’m tired of non-Jews assuming I must be “white” based on the fact that I’m Jewish and then say “oh, well then I wasn’t talking about you,” when I tell them I’m mixed and still find their words antisemitic, THIS IS WHAT I MEAN.
When I say Jews are no more or less racist than other minority group, and that biases within the Jewish community are not indicators of whiteness anymore than those biases in the Indian community (which I just posted about btw!) are indicators of whiteness, THIS IS WHAT I MEAN.
My mother and father were both raised in white neighborhoods in Oakland and San Leandro, California, respectively.
My mother, whose father worked selling scrap metal from the junkyard, has a distinctly Jewish maiden name. There were a few other Jewish families on her street, but she also had neighbors who spewed slurs and threats at her and prohibited their children from so much as speaking to her. At school a classmate stated that “the Jews killed Jesus” and the teacher essentially allowed that statement to stand as fact for the rest of the classroom, making my mother and her friend, the only Jewish students in the room, feel unsafe. My mother also grew up very close with her second cousins (the daughters of her own mother’s first cousin). The eldest of those second cousins had been born in a Soviet Refugee camp after her parents had been liberated from Auschwitz and met in that Soviet camp. While the family members from whom I am directly descended came to the US to flee Soviet pogroms, that doesn’t mean I am untouched my the Shoah (the Holocaust).
My father’s experience was different. His surname (and mine) is unique, but also very French, due to his paternal grandfather being a goy. My grandfather was stilled raised Jewish and he and my grandmother raised my aunt and father in a Jewish home as well, but that surname, as well as some steps taken to fit in, kept my father’s family from being recognized as Jewish. This was important because in the 1960s, when my father was a small child, San Leandro was the kind of town where a black man driving in a car would be tailed by police until he crossed the city limit into Oakland (where he ostensibly “belonged”). It would not have been a good town to be openly Jewish in. That isn’t to say my grandparents didn’t use their passing privilege, however. My grandfather single-handedly assisted a fellow Navy veteran and his family become the first Black family to live on their street. He also struck a police officer who was choking a Black father at a school board meeting (my grandfather was a teacher and a school board member). My grandmother worked in and eventually managed the voter registration office for the county of Alameda and worked with Huey P. Newton and the Black Panthers to organize voter registration drives in Black communities. They brought my father and aunt to march with Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta during the farmworker strikes. My grandmother still doesn’t buy table grapes.
I spent my entire childhood as the only Jewish or only religiously Jewish student in my grade and one of only a handful in the school. I was harassed for my dietary restrictions and for not celebrating Christmas and Easter. I was actually required by my public school teachers to participate in annual Christmas activities. I was the target of antisemitic bullying from classmates from preschool through high school. I’ve had academic consequences because of my choice to observe the High Holy Days. I’ve been tricked into eating treif by peers who would never think of doing such a thing to a Muslim person (nor should they).
The year I became a Bat Mitzvah a swastika was graffitied on my synagogue. I saw literally uncountable swastikas drawn on and even carved into desks, walls, and playground equipment throughout my time in school and I never reported it because I knew nothing would be done.
I am fortunate that I didn’t face the same level of harassment as my older sisters did, more likely due to my asocial nature than anything else. My eldest sister was the target of the “how many Jews can you fit in a Volkwagen” joke on multiple occasions. I was only taunted for picking up my own dropped change once.
The fact that people immediately and permanently see me differently when they learn I am Jewish is evidence enough to me that I am not White. I have the privilege of my maternal ancestors having been raped by Cossacks enough to make my mother’s skin light, and the privilege of having one half-goyische grandparent. I will never be targeted for my skin. But I will still be target for an unchangeable part of myself.
all people who say 'becoming x-pilled' deserve death and i have come to this stance after browsing the doom threads on 4chan and seeing a poster say they were 'taking the musicprodpill' by learning how to make midis

It appears absolutely no one realizes this character (assuming this story takes places during the time in which it was filmed) grew up during The Troubles of Northern Ireland.
You don’t if he’s Northern Irish. You don’t know if he’s Catholic. You don’t know if he grew up watching his people get murdered by Loyalist Protestants and British soldiers who carried heavy racial prejudice against Irish Catholics (hellooo, Bloody Sunday anyone?), who had for centuries been characterized as barbaric, racially inferior, lowly people who needed to be wiped out or converted. Attacks by the IRA, and therefore retaliation by the British, didn’t completely cease until 1998, I believe? This film came out in 2002.
You don’t know if he was an Irishman who grew up in England. Bomb attacks carried out by the IRA in England kindled misplaced aggression toward innocent Irish civilians living among the English population and Irish people were verbally and physically attacked and their businesses targeted. Perhaps similar to how ordinary Muslims bear the brunt of aggression after attacks by Muslim extremists…
You can still find yourself threatened and demeaned if you’re a Catholic in Northern Ireland or if you’re a Protestant in Ireland and some older dude in a pub in a smaller town straight up asks you if you’re Catholic or not and you’re afraid what’ll happen if you don’t lie about who you are.
You can still hear casual racism toward Irish people in everyday life and in publicly broadcast media in the UK.
You can still see and hear “Kill All Irish” and other pretty heavy anti-Irish sentiment among Loyalists in Northern Ireland who don’t consider themselves Irish at all.
Just because it now appears that the island of Ireland has been allowed to move on from war and their appearance and culture generally allows them to blend into and reap the benefits of the White European demographic doesn’t mean that this character does not have the background suitable to fully empathize with her. Maybe he does, maybe he doesn’t, we just don’t know his story.
But I guess you’ve never been demeaned as a Paddy or a Taig so you wouldn’t understand what it feels like, would you?
don’t worry dude it’s tumblr the mentality here is basically “if you’re lighter than a coconut you’re not allowed to have any feelings and your life is automatically perfect but that’s not racist at all bc your skin is lighter than someone else’s and that means it’s ok”
^^^^^^^^
not enough upward pointies in the world
plot twist: being Irish actually sucks, seriously
I normally don’t comment on posts like these but the ignorance of this makes me so fucking angry because absolutely no one in the world seems to give a shit about the Irish because we all just seem to be so happy and drunk all the time. Because they’re white, right? So obviously they have no idea what hardship means.
*bursts in* *breathes heavily* Did someone mention the Northern Irish Troubles
First of all, pretty much yes to everything about Ireland up there. Growing up in Northern Ireland, I saw the violence from all sides - my father is a British Protestant and my mother is a Catholic, so I basically couldn’t win because according to one side I was a dirty taig and according to the other I was a filthy hun. Luckily I managed to make friends with a mix of both Catholics and Protestants who all thought this attitude was just as stupid as I did, but between all of us, we saw our fair share of sectarian violence, and the Catholics, without a doubt, got it worse.
Irish Catholics were robbed of their country by Protestant invaders centuries ago. They fought and fought and eventually got the Irish Free State (now the Republic of Ireland), however, thanks to the deliberate plantation of Protestants to eradicate the Catholic majority in the North, it was left under British rule. Since then, Catholics have been murdered, arrested, terrorised, tortured and driven out of their houses just for being Irish Catholics.
I moved from Northern Ireland in 2010 and to the day I left, the violence was not over. I couldn’t wear certain colours in certain areas because I would be beaten. I had fake names depending on where I was stopped, as attackers can determine what religion you are from your name alone (and this is a trick I learned, too, for defence). I can recite my rights if I’m arrested because if I was stopped in certain areas I could be, on the assumption I could be Catholic. I know the subtle sectarian geography of the city of Belfast because if I cross the road in the wrong place I’m in enemy territory. I have been chased by a group of forty people, throwing fireworks at me, because they assumed I was a Catholic. Police were parked on nearby streets and didn’t acknowledge the commotion. My friends and I walk past graffiti screamed “Kill All Taigs”. A fifteen year old boy who lived half an hour from me was beaten to death by a group of adults for being Catholic. For fifty years, people have been detained without trial, tortured, beaten and wrongly imprisoned just for being Catholic, because apparently, being Catholic means you must be in the IRA.
Even now, I can’t escape it. I have a noticeable Northern Irish accent, which is stronger when I’m around people from there and is noticeable as a strong accent whenever I’m not in the country. At airports, I’m always the one stopped and frisked if they hear my accent. At ferry ports, it’s alway my car (which has Northern Irish registration plates) that’s “randomly selected” for a search. All of this just happened to me, a person who got off lightly.
If you think that Irish people haven’t faced oppression and abuse, you’re wrong. If you think that Northern Ireland is past its troubles, you’re wrong. It sickens me that this happens only a few hundred miles away from England and no one acknowledges it exists, because hey, they’re just some terrorist Catholics, right?
Contrary to popular belief, racism isn’t America centric. Just ask the Serbians and Croatians.
REBLOGGING FOR THE LAST ONE JFC THANK YOU.
Hell, ask Rwanda. Plot twist: ethnic genocide involving no white people at all!
Ask China about Japan. Ask Tibet about China. Ask Kuwait about Iraq. Ask Ukraine about Russia.
Xenophobia is not just the purview of white people. Any other can be an enemy. They can be the same colour. They can share a religion. They can live right next door right up until the moment the blade or gun or bomb is in your hand.
By the way, the woman who wrote and directed Bend it like Beckham? She’s a Brit of Indian descent. I’m fairly sure she knows what it’s like to be from an oppressed ethnic group in the UK, so when she writes a line about Asian and Irish people being treated similarly in British society, you better believe she knows what she’s talking about first hand.
Because newsflash, American forms of racism and ethnic prejudice are not universal.
