my pals on the lancecord asked me for some tips on cuban spanish so i thought iâd share them here too for all you lance writers. iâm a cuban voltron fan who doesnt want to live in fear of bad spanish in nearly every damn fic and im trying to be the change i want to see in the world. so feel free to message me if you have any questions about lanceâs culture bc this is nowhere near being comprehensive at all.
lets get into the stuff google translate canât teach u!
i donât know anyone under the age of 60 who says âdios mio.â lance definitely would not, unless he is doing an impression of his abuela.
things that sound more natural than dios mio: ave maria, ay dios, por dios, AY POR DIOS
more commonly we exclaim âcoĂąo!â for anything. shock/anger/awe/etc. if the reaction is negative, itâs just coĂąo. if the reaction is positive, we drop the first syllable and draw it out like ââĂąooooooâ
we exclaim âpinga!â or âcojone!â or âpinga cojone!â as a negative reaction more commonly than any translations of omg too
âde madreâ is something we usually exclaim a negative reaction. it can be yelled or sighed or grumbled. usually has a frustrated or incredulous connotation
âwepa!â is a sound we make as a positive exclamation.
we say ââuenoâ like the verbal embodiment of ÂŻ\_(ă)_/ÂŻ (itâs bueno with the b dropped)
other things that sound really stiff for cubans to say is like, âhola, como estas?â i mean, you say it to people youâre not on a casual level with. to friends/family these sound more natural:
âque bola asereâ is how we greet our close friends
âque bolaâ is how we say hey
âoyeâ is hey! but not as a greeting, as an exclamation. something you would say before a greeting or on its own when surprised/offended/trying to get someoneâs attention/etc
common insults: cabron/cabrona, mojon, comepinga, comemierda
common pet names for anyone: flaco, nena, mojon, mi socio, corazon
âasereâ is our word for âbroâ that no other country uses (1000% what lance calls hunk)
we also have a tendency to call our family members by their relation+their name, such as âmy Tio Jimmy calledâ or âAbuela Carmen is making food.â i think this is when we have big ol families and just saying tio or abuela isnt specific enough
also this isnt spanish but i s2g so many bilingual cubans i know use the word âfireâ almost constantly to describe something awesome. so i think thats a small cultural thing that communicates lance is cuban without having him speak spanish. (ex. âomg thatâs fireâ âhunk makes fire tacosâ âpidge is fire at fixing stuffâ âcan you play that fire song?â)
now hereâs a bunch of stuff thatâs just my opinion
I think itâs most in character for Lance to drop Spanish words only one or two at a time into English phrases, since thatâs how he uses it in canon (âHasta la later, Keith!â). A couple of quick examples off the top of my head -
tremendo/tremenda - an adjective for huge. âYouâre being tremendo sore loser, but okay.â
todito/todo - means everything. you can use them one after the other for extra drama. âI forgot todito, todo, about calculus immediately after passing it.â
These sound like really natural ways to drop Spanish into conversation without being forced if you keep it to a minimum. I aint here to tell u how to write your lance but i beg you -Â Please show restraint and donât try to use all of these tips at the same time!!
I recommend following latin internet personalities (like jaxxgarcia or mr. red) to pick up their Spanglish phrasing if youâre really into that. please donât try to make up your own. itâs never as cute as you thought.
if youâre writing full on spanish for more than a word or two, please do not ever make Lance speak it âaccidentallyâ (or even worse, on purpose) to someone he knows doesnât understand the language. thatâs really rude and alienating and itâs so against lanceâs character to isolate himself from others like that when he speaks fluent english.Â
other times Lance can drop a word or two in without sounding forced if heâs  namedropping cuban things! Try looking up some of ourÂ
food (ropa vieja, pan con lechon, arroz con leche)
drinks (materva, iron beer, malta),Â
films (juan of the dead, azucar amarga)
or music (celia cruz, marc anthony, juanes*) and have lance mention them by their spanish name if the topic comes up.Â
*not all of these musicians are cuban, but theyâre some of the most popular amongst us. iâm simply naming artists i think lance is most likely to enjoy considering his age and personality.
speaking of music, we have very specific dance styles that are pretty cool and almost mandatory to learn at a young age. cubans in general love to party, and to host large family gatherings which easily morph into parties, and basically any social event seems awkward if thereâs no one dancing at any point.Â
what Iâm trying to say is Lance definitely knows salsa or meringue moves.
I donât love to party and Iâm not a good dancer and I donât like dancing, but I know salsa anyway because I had to be in the environment my whole life. always exceptions, but the majority of cubans grow up knowing how to dance and it looks more or less like this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZEq54f1q0Xs
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLHP8hl7GfM
(no offense, but youâre a fool if u wrote a dance au and didnât have lance whip this out. i purposely looked for videos that reflect what average people dance like, but professional salsa is insanely cool)
and one last opinion for the road:
Voltron takes place in the future, so I like to dream of Lance being born in a world where Cubaâs free from communism. If youâre doing a Voltron AU that takes place nowadays, please donât write about Lanceâs experience in Cuba if you arenât familiar with what itâs like to live under a regime like that. Itâs very bleak and textbooks donât cover half of the fucked up things that those who live there actually have to go through.
Lance could have been born in Cuba, but raised somewhere else. Miami would be my recommendation because itâs our second homeland and it means he would have been raised surrounded by Cuban culture without the governmental oppression. But Cubans are absolutely everywhere, so itâs equally believable that Lanceâs family could have immigrated to Pawnee, Indiana. Even in Voltron canon, I think itâs likely Lance moved to America at a young age because he clearly has a native fluency in English.
hella good reference post, you rock!!!
More notes from another Cuban:
If Lance was raised in Miami (like me and 100383202930 other Cubans), hereâs some slang words he might use FREQUENTLY:
- bro (every five seconds. like. i say bro 19330393 times a day. âLIKE, BRO, WHY IS EVERYTHING SUCH A MISSION FOR YOU?â)
- literally. (in the way any american might say it. just 100000x more)
- bottles (miami guys LOVE saying this. it basically just means to party hard. âBRO, itâs gonna be BOTTLES tonight.â most likely came from popping bottles)
- irregardless (i still refuse to accept irregardless isnât an actual word. lance would 10000% say this. âIRREGARDLESS, i still feel super bloatedâ)
- ay (every cuban i know says ay all the time, whenever theyâre shocked or exasperated. âaY, my car!â âaY thatâs gotta hurtâ âaY oh my god what is this messâ âayyyy you interrupted my napâ)
- supposebly (instead of supposedly. ie:Â âwell, SUPPOSEBLY, she was gonna go out with tati tonightâ)
- que pena (literally means like âwhat a painâ or âwhat a pity.â âi mean, she wanted to go but was being so difficult. like, qUE penaâ )
- super (super everything. âsuper tiredâ âsuper lonelyâ âsuper hotâ âsuper constipatedâ)
- guy (used like bro, just slightly less frequently)
- dale (we actually do say dale like pitbull. a LOT. dale technically means âgo aheadâ in spanish, but cubans use it to mean not just go ahead but like âhell yes,â âcome,â âgo,â âwe can do it,â âbye,â etc.
- swears (like. an outrageous vow or claim. âlike, she swears. but caro/tati/andres/whoever told me they donât even know herâ)
- chisme (gossip.)
- getty (a get-together. not big enough to be a party, but still not just a small hangout. âno, mami, itâs just a little getty at my house. only like 5 people.â)
- chancleta (what u get when u talk back to ur mom. itâs a flip flop/sandal to the head.)
- this is an accurate post:Â https://www.wearemitu.com/mitu-voice/that_ventanita_is_packed_bro/

other notes/tips on writing miami cuban lance:
- lance is a man so he probably greets women/children (so pidge, allura, his mom, etc) with kisses on the cheek, but theyâre not actually kisses the way we do them? theyâre more like just pressing ur cheek to their cheek and making a kissing noise lol. cuban women greet everyone this way.Â
- he probably greets other men who he is platonic with with what i like to call the âplatonic but loving cuban man hug/handshake.â essentially heâll grab their hand vertically and pull them in for a brief hug where they pat each other on the back. but latino men r pretty affectionate towards everyone, so the hug can be a bear hug. sort of like this:
- there is no exceptions to this. this is how he greets everyone. even people he just met. ^^
- he probably calls his mom âmomâ âmaâ or âmami,â or a combo of the three. his dad is most likely âpapiâ but âdadâ is also acceptable. please dont write smut where lance calls shiro or keith or whoever papi in the place of daddy. thats just. so uncomfortable for me and pretty much every cuban (or just. latinx) person on earth. thanks.Â
- his grandparents are abuelo and abuela
- if lance has an older sister in your headcanons, itâs not uncommon for little kids to call their big sisters âtata.â it usually doesnât extend past the ages of like 10-13, but itâs pretty normal.
- aunts can be called titi in the place of tia- especially if theyre older! i call my younger aunts by their first names, but i call my older aunts (who are both over 50) titi!Â
- he refers to hair ties/scrunchies/whatever as moĂąos. nail polish remover is acetona.Â
- rt about what op said about coĂąo. lance says coĂąo all the time for sure.Â
- he pronounces salmon wrong. he says itâs sahl-man.Â
- he 10000% drinks rose (like. pink wine.)
- he eats croquetas. every cuban does.
- he most likely drinks cafe con leche for breakfast, and drinks espresso after dinner.Â
- rt on tremendo/tremenda.Â
cuban nicknames:
chismoso/a - a gossip
gordo/a / gordito/a - literally means fat/little fat but is an affectionate term used to refer to someone whoâs fat or chubby lovingly. i call my brother gordo instead of his actual name. lance may call hunk gordo affectionately
flaco/a / flacito/a - same as gordo but with skinny people
mi vida - literally âmy life.â what your abuela calls you because she adores the living shit out of you so much that every saturday she takes you to navarro (like. hispanic CVS) and lets u get a toy or, if ur lucky, jcpenney and lets u buy things with her JCP card
gringo/a - a white + non-hispanic person.Â
