because they say in the movie that it'll take 11 years or so for communication with earth to happen, which means that if ryland grace starts tumblr blogging right after he wakes up, it could take anywhere from roughly 5-ish earth years for his posts to show up. (taking that tumblr posting takes a lot less internet than it does to have a phone call that's active and always updating).
Ryland Grace and Rocky could very much have a one way updating system to the people of earth by fucking with the internet

Obsession posting on main but it really is incredible how well the whole thing is set up just in the first few minutes. The first shot is a POV from a woman's perspective as Bear talks at us and tells us his feelings. It cuts occasionally to the girl thinking this is cute but is clearly a little uncomfortable, only to learn that this person is not Nikki, but just some poor waitress who was on her break and who they presumably kinda roped into this. They don't even listen to her thoughts on the matter, start talking exclusively to each other, and then they just thank her and tell her she can go now and her entire break was apparently used up on their confession practice. Just kind of using women for an imagined scenario and not wondering what she might think about it even in the first five minutes. Incredible stuff.
So I did go see Obsession again last night and made sure to pay extra attention to Bear’s little opening monologue when he’s practicing his love confession to Nikki.
Bear doesn’t say a single thing about Nikki as a person in his speech. He doesn’t say that he loves her kindness and how she cares for others, he doesn’t talk about how he loves her creativity or care-free spirit, he doesn’t talk about what he likes about her.
He talks about nice things she’s done for him. He talks about what she means to him. He talks about her being there for him, and how he likes how she’s treated him.
And while I won’t pretend that those things aren’t important, they are the only things Bear mentions in his big vulnerable romantic speech.
Bear’s “confession” tells us literally nothing about Nikki other than that she’s been nice to Bear in the past.
But in a subtle way, his “love confession” tells us a LOT about Bear and his actual feelings for Nikki.
He likes that she’s been nice to him. That’s it.
He likes that she’s been nice to him, and whether it was an unconscious process or not, Bear has responded to Nikki’s being nice to him by becoming obsessed and infatuated with her.
To the point that, once he’s (albeit initially unwittingly) in a position of power over her, he completely disregards her personhood and begins to feel entitled to her and her body.
That’s another layer to Obsession that I find absolutely chilling. That so often just being nice or polite to someone won’t lead to them showing you that same kindness in return, but will instead lead them to feeling entitled to you.

we don't appreciate fucked up sibling dynamics in media as much as we should. what if this was the person who knew you the best in the whole world but also didn't really know you, and they were everything you wanted to be but also the worst parts of yourself reflected back in a way you couldn't help but love. and you looked at them and felt apathetic and overwhelmed with emotion at the same time and you would be someone entirely different without them. they were a part of you and it hurt. what if the most important person to you was also the one who caused you the most heartbreak. what then
I also think that the strength gap is at least partially manufactured women would in fact be stronger overall if little girls were encouraged to do physically taxing games and activities and eat their fill while they’re growing vs having to constantly diet and be sedentary indoors (or god forbid do intense cardio while under-eating). The amount of adult women honestly afraid to lift weights bc they think they’ll get bulky as though bulking isn’t a full time job that athletes have to spend all their time on and anyone on earth gets shredded from just using their adult muscles for their intended purpose, girl your bone density 🥀
if you say women are intentionally nerfed from birth in 2026 people look at you like you’re insane and start condescendingly telling you about how women are just better at different things (but not during their periods haha) but this was a completely basic feminist talking point I grew up with like “girls can do it too! [shot of little girls climbing and running with boys]” nickelodeon commercial tier base level I hate it how is everyone suddenly dumber than the average 7 year old
