My only real beef with NuTrek set at the same time that Bashir and Garak exist is that they haven't had the balls to make it screen canon. Like, it was there in DS9 to the point the Powers that Be had to tell Alexander Siddig & Andrew Robinson to Knock It Off, and separated the characters as much as they could without pissing off the entire fan base.
The actors saw it, the fans saw it, it is there!! If you can give us Picard and bring back all those people and little nods, you sure as hell can give us 30 seconds of Bashir consulting with Beverly with Cardassia in the background and Garak popping over Bashir's shoulder to ask about her magic-borg-son.
actually yes bc let's be so serious, andrew robinson could be a hundred years old and would still race to the makeup chair if it meant having a tiny little actual canon depiction of garashir -- same goes for alexander siddig, sans the makeup. they have a fanbase, books and a whole play about them, i'd say a crumb or two of canon content that ISN'T the lower decks video game wouldn't be out of left field. let my gay evil lizard and his dumb doctor boyfriend hold hands or something 😭😭😭😭
i said what i said. garashir forever, bitches
They've untragic'd my gays
i can't actually believe that, after 60+ years of pining and heartache and separation, they finally get peace 😭
An episode of Star Trek where Spock becomes "100% human" could have been good. As long as you remember the difference between biology and culture. A Spock who has suddenly became human would still have grown up Vulcan and would still follow their practices. He would not suddenly be emotional and he would not be eating meat.
But there are a lot of differences between Vulcans and humans that you could focus on! He could have trouble adapting to how much weaker his body is. Spock rushing into dangerous situations because he is the toughest is so common so now you could have him do that but then be like oh fuck. You could have him not realizing that he need to drink, eat and sleep more and be driving his body to the breaking point. The fact that he suddenly has sweat glands could be super unpleasant and he could overheat. I think he should definitely struggle with no longer being telepathic. Maybe it makes it harder for him to understand other people or maybe it makes it harder for him to understand his own thoughts. There could be stuff about how his eyesight is worse and he is constantly squinting and messing up colors.
There is literally so much that could be done with this concept and I don't think that it is an inherently bad one. I just don't think the way to do it is to make it so Spock is a complete different person who has no idea how Vulcans work (and needs to be taught what Vulcans are like???) and no control over his emotions. And I definitely don't think it is the right call to make the crew like Spock more when he is human.
Like wise an episode about how the rest of the crew are suddenly Vulcan could be good but it looks like it will fall into the same trap. A human who just suddenly turned into a Vulcan would not have the cultural history and upbringing to act like the Vulcans we normally see. They would not know how to control their emotions or telepathy. They would still be acting like humans. If anything a human turned Vulcan should be incredibly destructive.
THIS. i got gripes with making a culturally vulcan character, whose traits were to some extent based on leonard nimoy's own jewish heritage, eat bacon just because his biology changed a little. your take is brilliant op ❤️
If you lived in the Star Trek universe and you eat a replicated meat product (pork, chicken, beef, fish etc) would it be considered vegan?
yes
no
adding my 2 cents here as a vegetarian & former vegan: FUCK NO LMAO. it's just a more ethical way (since there's no animal suffering/killing involved) of creating the same product. if replicator tech was real i'd personally, since i'm vegetarian for ethical reasons, just have to reconsider on that basis, since it's still animal meat (made up of the same atoms & proteins etc that real meat is made up of), but procured in a presumably more ethical way. but would it be vegetarian/vegan? nuh uh
I do love that Garak varies wildly from "I am just a simple Tailor" to just shouting "allegedly!" Whenever anyone mentions the Obsidian Order, to "well if I were with the Order I would say..."
But when he's alone with Julian he drops all pretense. Alone with Julian he says "they never taught me that when I was in the order." He says "maybe I joined the wrong intelligence agency." He says 'i trust you'
a concept: the ds9 crew doing a hear me out cake when quark pulls out a picture of gul dukat. absolute mayhem. chairs are flying

I just know in my heart that an Amok Time situation would never happen in the AOS universe simply because when Spock tells Kirk that it's Vuclan Biology and he needs to fuck or die Kirk would've jumped his ass right then and there
aos!spock: it's about vulcan biology
aos!kirk, ripping off his shirt, on call with amanda for advice, thinking about how well "S'chn T'gai James Tiberius" works as a name, calling to mind knowledge imparted on him by illegally downloaded pdfs about vulcan biology & pon farr that he perused for no particular reason at all, ready to pack up his shit and move into spocks quarters, with sarek on speed dial to ask for permission to bond with/marry spock because he might not be old-fashioned but he's an old fashioned romantic when it comes down to spock, planning a charming spring wedding on earth & a ceremony on vulcan: i'll do it for the mission
Garry Marshall was filming the Michelle Pfeiffer/Al Pacino romance Frankie and Johnny in the same studio as Star Trek VI. He decided to take advantage of this fact when a key shot relied on Al Pacino’s complete surprise upon opening a door and seeing who was on the other side. Marshall asked Nicholas Meyer if he could borrow his two leads for a few minutes and had them waiting on the other side of the door, in full costume.
Pacino, of course, delivered.
Article transcript:
BEHIND THE SCREENS
Enterprising ‘lovebirds’ stop Al Pacino dead in his tracks!
SEX: THE FINAL FRONTIER! Filming a scene from the new movie “Frankie and Johnny,” Al Pacino was supposed to catch screen girlfriend Michelle Pfeiffer making love to another guy – but when he burst through the bedroom door, he found CAPTAIN KIRK and MR. SPOCK locked in a mock embrace!! Pacino’s eyes popped out as if he’d been stunned by a phaser when William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy – dressed in their Enterprise uniforms – said together: “OOPS! BEAM US UP, SCOTTY, I THINK WE’RE ON THE WRONG SET!”. As cast and crew guffawed, Pacino realized that it was a gag and began laughing so hysterically he almost collapsed! Shatner and Nimoy, who had been shooting “Star Trek VI” on a nearby soundstage, were talked into the prank by “Frankie” director Garry Marshall.

"I am scared, Spock, help me not to be, how do you choose not to feel?"
"I do not know. Right now I am failing"
I think Amanda fully believed she and Sarek were dating for weeks or months before he realized that she thought that.
Like, Sarek is thinking he's doing SUCH a good job in Human Diplomacy, he has made A Human Friend. They do activities together, consume meals together, communicate outside of work functions in an informal fashion. Amanda makes an effort to show him Human culture and landmarks that are more likely to appeal to a Vulcan and is considerate of his different physiology in a way most Humans usually forget to be. She doesn't touch him without warning but still somehow uses body language to convey to other Humans that they are together on their activities. She gives him lots of signs of Human comfort and intimacy without pushing too hard at his Vulcan boundaries. He's Succeeding at Human socializing!
Meanwhile Amanda has like. Introduced him to her parents. Taken him to friends' weddings. Done super obvious This Is A Date activities with him, only tailored to accomodate Vulcan preferences about physical contact and emotional displays. SHE thinks she is doing So Good at Wooing The Vulcan. Sometimes he willingly touches her when they are out in public, to like, keep them from getting separated, or pull her out of the path of danger or discomfort, which as far as she knows is like Vulcan First Base.
But also she is a Human woman they have been dating for months and taking it slow for her Vulcan beau is beginning to grow...somewhat frustrating! A little! Like she enjoys spending time with him but also! She would sure like to touch him more! Maybe kiss him! She would even settle for feeling up his hands the way Vulcans do because she has gotten so preoccupied with his hands since they've been dating, she feels like a 19th century maiden, it's insane.
So she casually broaches the subject of whether or not Vulcans engage in sexual activity outside of Pon Farr (when they're having a quiet evening alone in one of their apartments, obviously, you don't have a sex talk with your very shy boyfriend in public) and Sarek is like. Well that's a very intimate topic, Amanda, why do you ask? Is there a Vulcan you are interested in pursuing a romantic relationship with?
And she's just like What.
And he's like (gently condescending) That sort of question could imply a "come-on", as you Humans would say.
And she's like I SURE HOPE IT WOULD, SAREK, MY BOYFRIEND OF SIX MONTHS, WITH WHOM I WOULD LIKE TO BE PHYSICALLY INTIMATE
And Sarek is like WHAT.

cannot relate to most star trek posts on here because everybody loves bones. I do not love bones. I hate bones. I am a bones anti. he should be killed and spock should be the one to do it
i'm afraid us bones dislikers don't talk about this enough!!! bones is a raging fucking racist and an asshole to boot. honestly even if he's good at heart, which i believe he is, that will never excuse his rudeness and dismissiveness of spock just bc he's half vulcan.
imagine you grow up on vulcan, hated for any part of you that seems human, and then you go to starfleet and oh look at that, you're ridiculed for being vulcan AND for any glimpse of that "human side" that you've supressed brutally all your life. if spock is your blorbo, and i'm so serious when i say this, how can you like bones? 😬 do people on tumblr dot com just love making fun of autistic people and being racist or...?
