The lady in the lake
Livia Drusilla was a Roman empress from 27bc to AD 14.
She was the wife of Tiberius Nero and then once divorcing him while still pregnant with his child, she married Caesar Gaius Augustus, the first Roman emperor.
She was known as the shadow master behind the emperor, her knowledge in politics made her a formidable partner and as a daughter from one of the oldest Roman families she brought legitimacy to her second husbands rule.
She was never able to give her husband the heirs he needed to secure his own line but by doing so her first born from Nero, Tiberius Caesar Augustas, became his heir and as such became the second Roman emperor.
She survived two husbands and multiple changes in the Roman political arena.
In AD 29 she fell ill and died, with her son by her side after years of a more than turbulent relationship.
Her legacy is remembered to this day, and depending on who is telling the story she is ever the she-wolf of Rome or a woman who did the best she could with the circumstances she had.
Hypatia was a hellenistic Neoplatonist philosopher, astronomer, and mathematician, who lived in Alexandria, in Roman occupied Egypt.
She was raised by her mathematician father who worked and taught in the university of Alexander. As she grew older she surpassed her father in astronomy and mathematics and took up teaching at the university herself.
Hypatia was renowned in her own lifetime as a great teacher and a wise counsellor, teaching in the university and advising the ruling government.
Although she herself was a pagan, she was tolerant towards Christians and taught many Christian students. Her classrooms were a melting pot of religions, ages and nationalities as students flocked to learn from her from all parts of the the ancient world.
As Christianity rose in popularity tensions were raised in Alexandria as people were against the new religion and their strict views. As tensions raised the popularity of a pagan female advisor to the government became less and less popular and as Hypatia drove her carriage home one day she was dragged from it by an angry Christian mob, murdered and dismembered. She was 45.
It is said that her murder was the beginning of the end for the city of Alexandria, and only a handful of years later the city was no longer the place for education it once was.
Living with an all seeing demon is rough but they will make toast at all hours of the day and night.
