When Garnet looked back up at the confusion on her face, she knew that there was no hope in maintaining this facade any longer. At least her name was close to “Steven”, from her reaction.

“…I’m sorry; I don’t actually know who you are. You look and seem a lot like Steven, this boy I know that has a gem on his belly button, so I talked to you like him. I apologize for misleading you.”

She looked back at her with a small smile of hope. “I would still like to be friends, though. What’s your actual name?”

Her features became alarmed then. Garnet was definitely giving her a lot of information that didn’t make sense.

“What do you mean you don’t know who I am?” she asked, brows furrowed. “Stevie. Nora Stevie Universe, the child you, Pearl and Amethyst have kinda been raising my whole life?”

“And you said you know a boy named Steven who has a gem on his belly button too? Am I in some weird dream again?” She paused, wondering if this was actually it. “Yeah, this has gotta be a dream, first I’m seeing diamonds, now I’m seeing you not knowing me. Unless you’re pranking me? Ha, this is a prank, right, Garnet?” she spoke with a nervous laugh. “Please tell me this is a prank.”

Chopper walked over to the adorable human in his Christmas attire, smiling wide as he hoped to enjoy the oncoming holiday season by walking up to her and making a new friend. In spite of having never met her before, he just couldn’t wait to get presents for his soon-to-be-friend. “Hello there! Merry Christmas~!" He shouted out excitedly, overjoyed in anticipation for Christmas.

This girl was the human offspring of Rose Quartz, too? Now Garnet knew for sure something was up. If the situation was different, she would definitely begin asking her questions.

But again, she seemed desperate for the fusion to talk to her, give her advice. And so she did, to the best extent she was able. As if she was Steven Universe, the most extraordinary human she knew.

“I don’t think it’s pathetic. In a way, talking to your mom like that is giving you closure for the things she left behind. Don’t feel ashamed about it, Steven.”

She fell silent, her eyes darting away. Hopefully the girl wouldn’t notice such a obvious slip of the tongue.

“I mean yeah, I guess it’s closure, but-- wait.” She had to pause. Did Garnet just call her Steven? Maybe she heard it wrong. “Stev...en?” Stevie repeated. She laughed a little with a smile. That was weird, especially with Garnet suddenly looking away. “Did you say Steven?” she asked, her tone sounding amused despite her confusion.

There had definitely been a few people over the course of her life who asked one of the crystal gems or her dad if Stevie was a nickname for Steven, although they answered no, it was after a singer her dad liked: Stevie Nicks, and this was before people realized that Stevie was a girl. It was Nora Stevie Universe, though her middle name Stevie always just stuck more than Nora. Pearl still called her Nora from time to time, but no one else did. And especially no one called her Steven.

Garnet had no idea who the girl before her was, but she was a dead ringer for Steven. She was addressing her as if she was Steven, as well. Under normal circumstances, she would ask her who she was and sort things out.

But this girl looked too vulnerable right now to be sent on her way, told that she had the wrong Gem. She would feel horrible if she didn’t stay by her side.

“What happened? I’ll give you advice, if I can.” She said it as confidently and motherly as possible. As if this was actually Steven she was talking to.

Wires got dimensionally crossed when both Steven and Stevie entered their respective mothers’ rooms at the same time, and were both in there for some time. When they left, they walked out of a door that they hadn’t come in from into each other’s timelines. Stevie hadn’t noticed the small, subtle differences between her world and this one after stepping out of Rose Quartz’s room. She went straight to bed and when she woke up, there was pizza, and later Garnet. And she looked like her Garnet. The teenager didn’t even notice that she was in an alternate reality. 

“I went into Mom’s room last night.” she told Garnet. “And I did the most stupid thing. I asked the room to show her to me. It gave me this... fake copy of Rose Quartz that wasn’t even her. I mean, of course it wasn’t. The room couldn’t give me actually her, I knew that, yet I still talked to it. It was like playing pretend. We played video games, football... and we talked. Near the end, it was mainly talking on my side. Confronting her. She also hugged me. It felt like I actually got to hug my mom for the first time. Part of me wants to go back and talk to what is basically a hologram again. Isn’t that just pathetic?”

“Garnet?” The young girl’s voice rang with uncertainty, cheeks flushed with embarrassment even. They just got back from space yesterday, they rescued her dad, they escaped the zoo, she should be happy, Stevie thought. But then Connie left, and the gems were gone, and she was alone with the portrait of Rose Quartz looming over her. And then what happened kept her up last night. “Can I ask you about something... something I did?”

“When you guys were out getting pizza, something happened.” Stevie’s throat tensed, feeling a knot as if she swallowed a rock. But Garnet was the one she trusted most with this. Pearl would worry too much and Amethyst would just tell her not to worry.

“Good thinking, Sis!” Gem Steven smiled helping them stay organized in the backpack so they won’t get squished or misshapened. Amethyst was on look out for any of the store clerks.

“Alright. That’s about 20 at the big donut.” He replied, “on to the next store!” He replied picking Nora and the backpack up and ran out the door Amethyst following. Pearl in persuit to see they already went and stole a sizable ammount and went back in to pay for them.

“Alright, next place, is … Cosmo-Mart they got all sorts of space themed stuff Cookie Cats are space themed… the store’s on Main street right before you get out of Beach City!” He replied running with Nora in his arms.

“Woo! Theft!” Nora beamed cheerfully as she was picked up. Their heist went well, Nora unaware that Pearl was actually following them store to store, paying for everything. With a backpack to the brim full of Cookie Cat, and with having poofed a centipeedle along with the other gems, she felt very accomplished today. 

“Okay, we should get these home before they melt.”

“Whoo! I’m up for stealing a bunch of ice cream for Steve-o!” Amethyst hops on. The warp starts to glow. “Amethyst!” Pearl yelled in frustration, watching them warp off.

Gem Steven, Amethyst, and Nora was in the wrap stream. “So how many we stealing?” Amethyst asked.

“As many as possible. I might not like them cause they make me sick but I wanna make sure Steven doesn’t miss out on anything.” Gem Steven explained.

“We might need to stop at multiple stores, the fridges they have ‘em in are really small.” Nora pointed out. They got to the store and immediately she ran to where she knew the Cookie Cat fridge was. She liked them, ate them occasionally, but nowhere near the level of Steven. Nora preferred Lion Lickers. 

Immediately she took her backpack off her shoulders, opening it, and the fridge, and began scooping the ice cream sandwich packages into the backpack.

Truthfully—-Ky was NOT used to this amount of praise from another person. At least not when it wasn’t superficial in some way. Sure she got praise from fans of her music, but in a lot of ways she didn’t find that kind of thing to be genuine. So the fusion found it odd when it was.

       “ No…I’ve never dated anyone. It’s shocking, I know. I’ve not been one interested in relationships of that nature until recently I guess.”

     Plus she’d really never had anyone who seemed to crush on her anyway.

     “ So….no. I suppose I wouldn’t know how to tell, unless it was told to me outright.”

                 “From what I’ve seen though….I doubt anyone DOES.”

“Well, we know you have high standards, but do you have a concept of what those are?” Stevie asked curiously. “Maybe if we can pinpoint what you really want in a person, you can start to look for people who have those qualities.”

“STEVEN’S FAVORITE ICE CREAM IS GETTING DISCONNECTED.” Gem Steven yelled. “We gotta go rob a store!” He replied heading to the warp pad, “Nora, come on!!”

Nora gasped. “That’s horrible!” she spoke, running to her room. “Wait, I’m gonna grab my backpack to carry the ice cream!” she shouted back as she quickly grabbed it and darted to the warp pad. Breathing heavily as she stood on the warp pad, she held a thumbs up as she put her backpack on.

“Pearl, it’s just words. It’s not like I’m directing it at anyone.” Gem Steven replied.

“I make no promises!…” Gem Steven paused, looking around. “I think that’s all of them for now.”

Nora was confused; she had never heard that word before and didn’t get what was so unsavory about it. She decided to ask Gem Steven later what it meant. 

“How can we find the mother?” she asked for now. “She’ll have a gem, right? We’ll be able to bubble her?”
