I love when my history classes just devolve into me and my classmate A the commie and my classmate D the brown girl infodumping about all the shit rich and influential people have done.
Todayâs edition: Mahatma Gandhi and the pedophilia and antisemitism, and Elon Musk and the ethics of wealth and his involvement in coups executed by the American government.
godd i just hate the idea of academia as an aesthetic so much . weâre out here trying to demystify scholarship and destroy the image of classics as this sacred, elistist, mysterious subject n people are like no weâd rather think about the idea, the feeling, the persona of academia rather than actually engage in analytical, scholarly thinking or any self-reflexive critiscism of the way that imagery and aesthetics help perpetuate an elitist ideal deeply rooted in classism and colonialism im not saying that dark academia is inherently problematic or that classics students are oppressed bc youre fetishising our degree or anything but like . i swear to god if i see another post thats like âhow to be more dark academicâ im going to eat my computer
oop there it is
iâm currently reading the metamorphosis
DID SOMEONE SAY KAFKA
Are you kidding me. Seriously, fuck Disney. They buy out a studio just to shut them down and now weâre going to be deprived of a movie that could have been incredible. Blue Sky was about to make a movie adaptation of Noelle Stevensonâs comic Nimona, a creative and wonderful story with LGBT leads and a unique style. This is why I donât trust Disney; they take over everything and shut down any sort of progress that doesnât fit their money-making agenda. Capitalism breeds innovation my ass.
In the wake of Blue Sky Studios shutting down, it has been revealed that the studio's final title, an adaptation of Nimona, was nearly compl
college is catered towards the able bodied and able minded. school applauds people who can stay up all night, skip meals, and work endlessly. that kind of extreme contribution is expected. why are disabled people being squeezed out of academic institutions? why should I feel inferior because of some arbitrary and ridiculous standard?
The undying truth.
Not to mention, every college campus Ive ever been on is MADE of stairs and hills.
I tried to talk to one of my college professors about my ADHD once and he literally stopped me and said if I couldnât handle it I shouldnât be there
Read the book Academic Ableism on this subject. Itâs an excellent read and I genuinely think about it all the time still even though I read it a couple years ago.
We really used to ask teachers if we could drink water.......what the fuck was that
Or to use the bathroom and they really said "noâ€ïž"

Watching academia conversations when you attend and have a degree from an African university is bizarre because the eurocentricity makes me think wow⊠have you guys heard⊠the word decolonisationâŠ

Infratext: Subtext that nobody picked up on because it was too deep for them.

Why is it whenever ppl bring up things that have colonial implications or a history within colonialism, people get like reaaaally pissy about it & act like we're makin shit up to ruin their fun just for like. Talking about something that hurt us & still does
"Um the wellerman isnt about colonizing, its about the working class đ" idk how to tell you working class white people still had power & privilege over Indigenous Maori people in New Zealand & also had a hand in colonialism
Black ppl: H@milton is a revisionist musical that glorifies colonizers & slave owners into a quirky show, whilst the writer is not black and himself had lobbied for U.S imperialism in Puerto Rico
White fans: that's fake no it doesn't, you're reading too much into it & overreacting, let people enjoy things
Natives: c0ttagecore & romantisizing farm life or "escaping" to some land to own a farm or cottage actually has a history of colonialism, manifest destiny, & farms have historically & still are utilized in the colonization process
White fans: that's fake no it doesn't, you're reading too much into it & overreacting, let people enjoy things
MÄori & Black people: A lot of shanties are literally talking about colonization or the white working class participating in it, & Shanties were an offshoot from working songs. The Wellerman specifically is named after a company that screwed over and colonized MÄori people in New Zealand while whaling in its seas & importing goods stolen from colonized countries, including ones forcibly cultivated by black people in the form of slavery, like cotton or sugar
White fans: that's fa--
So we can't want to bake and have a garden or press leaves or picnics? It's an aesthetic I could actually engage in in my real life someday. Now it's bad. Ah fuck it I'll probably die this year or next anyway. :(
you can do literally whatever you want, except have everybody like and approve of you. you can just do those things and tolerate being made fun of. nobody is trying to put you in prison for growing a carrot.
Except part of talking about the whole c0ttagecore thing was trying to get people to rethink the whole following through with going off to some farm or whatever because of how it might affect native people or the environment in general. This idiot is reducing genuine concerns that stem from genuine issues to "so I can't press FLOWERS?? You're overreacting" on a post where I talk about white people doing this exact thing. Literally nothing is stopping anyone from doing the things they described right where they live at the moment while also being mindful of indigenous people, issues, rights, and being aware of their privilege, but when it gets to the point of fantasizing about doing this shit like theyre lil settlers in little house on the prairie that shit gets ugly. Nobody's gunna jail them for farming but natives might lose some land (again) because of it
You guys know when your brain feels like it won't shut up and it's buzzing and flickering like crazy but every time you try to reach in there and find out what it's thinking about it's just singing Peas Porridge Hot real loud
im creating a subgenre of dark academia called grey academia. less classism and less subtle racism. less drugs and alcohol. less wildly expensive colleges and clothes. still with the biting chill of the autumn wind. instead of tweed and carefully pressed suits itâs denim jackets, flannel, and combat boots. everyone carries sketchbooks where they can draw in their long droning classes or write down quick notes or ramble about their feelings. everyone fights to make academia more accessible to the masses. everything is vaguely punk rock and no one dies
Sounds like a hufflepuff
Every time someone reblogs this post I take one d8âČs worth of psychic damage

99% of computer repair is googling the problem to see if anyone else has successfully fixed it. I have a certification in computer repair and I was allowed AND EXPECTED to use google in my exam. 99% of bartending is pulling pints and adding coke to a spirit. I managed bars for 10 years and have a diploma in Cafe, Bar, and Restaurant Management. I think I can make like 7 cocktails from memory. I use google to find the recipes for the rest. I was working towards a paleontology degree. On the few digs I was involved in, everything was photographed and shared with experts who werenât there to get their opinions. The real world doesnât operate in exam conditions. Whatever career path you follow, you will be able to consult colleagues in some form or another. Youâll be allowed to use Google and Wikihow and industry specific forums and texts and websites. Exam conditions do not exist outside of exams.
Keep up the good fight for the soul of grey academia!!!
The soul of grey academia is very tired and wants to get everyone the fuck off of tumblr and go take a walk instead.
To follow up my last text post on wlw in Dark Academia, we need more POCs in Dark Academia. I donât know how to stress enough that DA is not just for white people, and people of any race and ethnicity can take part. As a POC myself (Iâm Latina) Iâm well aware that thereâs a lot of classism and a history or Eurocentrism in Academia itself, but DA will always be inclusive to POCs. There are many POCs that enjoy the Dark Academia aesthetic, even though it can be incredibly whitewashed.Â
If youâre a POC that engages with DA or takes part in it in any way, know that I see you, and you are valid (I honestly shouldnât even have to say it because you should know that of course you are, but if you needed a reminder, there it is). You do not have to be white to enjoy DA, no matter what anyone else may say. Dark Academia has an uncanny habit of romanticizing thin white people, and not offering the same status or visibility to POCs, and thatâs something that we should fight to change. POCs deserve to be seen, acknowledged, and given important roles in DA books and movies just as much as white people.Â
The different learning experiences and different vibrant cultures of many POCs should be taken into account in DA. Each culture presents something new and different in knowledge and in their works. Consume works made by POCs. Read books in other languages if you can. Learn about other cultures, and if you are a POC yourself, donât be afraid to incorporate parts of your culture into DA. Knowledge should always come from many different sources, and we as academics should not be limiting ourselves to only European works when great knowledge, art and literature comes from many different places; lest we become the ignorant ones who refuse to see beyond our own tiny sphere of only European academia.Â
academia types âšâš
dark academia: you have 3 copies of to Kill a Mockingbird, you wonât shut up your current obsession, you were too shy to answer questions in class even though you knew every answer. despite being super capable, you still wing a lot of tasks. also self-care but make it ~ edgy ~.
light academia: youâre the teachers pet, but like in a good way? you probably tried to learn an instrument like the flute in school but havenât played it since, always holding iced coffee, works way better in an Organised Study Group with like minded pals.
pastel academia: all the coloured highlighters imaginable, and the neatest handwriting? studying anywhere BUT their room (cute cafĂ© yes please), if youâre nice to them they will fall in love with you, you probably havenât seen their natural hair colour.
grey academia: takes lots of notes but can they read them?, cried listening to Greta Thunberg in 1975âs song, âgender is a social constructâ, surprisingly good at time management, probably short and angry, constantly trying to tell their parents how to be âwoke.â
classic academia: your cat is your best friend, always dreamt about having a bookstore cafĂ© when you were older, definitely participating in goodreads reading challenge, you shock friends on your ability to always sleep on time, quiet until people get to know you (and discover youâre ~quirky~)
science academia: you are not capable of liking things casually: itâs all or nothing, constantly complaining about how difficult your subjects are but knowing this is exactly what you want to do, well practiced at pulling all-nighters, probably got some sort of nerdy/edgy tattoo.
Dark, light, grey, and science
Lmao Iâm a mess đ
hahah youâre a true AcademicâąÂ
I feel like this person took one look at grey academia and decided not to talk to any of us before making this post
