I gotta hand it to sandler that this scene is exactly what listening to that song feels like.
The Department of Education worked with the far-right Family Research Council to officially designate March 12th as Detrans Awareness Day last year. But what actually leads people to detransition? It's not regret, but social stigma, incited by the very figures who claim to protect detransitioners. I want to hear their stories describing how the current moral panic influenced their decisions.
Part of the reason why I'm so passionate about being against the whole 'kill all men' mindset is because it does affect me directly as a trans woman.
If you're the type of person who automatically assumes men are bad people, then I have news for you. That assumption isn't going to wait until I tell you I'm trans. You're going to—whether subconsciously or consciously—assume I am just a man, and even after I tell you I am a trans woman your perception of me will still be permanently altered.
Discriminatatory beliefs aren't going to wait for me to tell you my pronouns.
I grew up in Florida, where at the age of twelve I was a victim of terror campaigns telling adults that I was going to sexually assault their children in the bathrooms, specifically because of the reason that 'men are all evil.'
I went through way too much at the hands of those people to see practically every ""leftist"" online continuing to push that ideology. Unlearn it. Please. It directly affects us trans women, too.
I still, to this day, have internalized this ideology, and I cannot look at myself in the fucking mirror because I think to myself people see me as a threat, no one feels safe around me. As a direct result of 'all men are evil.'
It doesn't matter whether or not transfemmes are your intended target. You are hurting us just as much as you're hurting everyone else.

Mirror-Ball Spiders: these spiders are covered in shimmering, mirror-like panels that shift and expand as the muscles of the abdomen contract
Spiders of the genus Thwaitesia are often described as mirror-ball spiders, because their bodies are lined with reflective panels that make them look like tiny disco-balls. These arachnids are also known as dewdrop spiders or sequined spiders.
Above: two different species of mirror-ball spider
The shimmering panels on the abdomen are produced by a digestive secretion known as guanine, which seeps out through the lining of the spider's gut and forms a mosaic of crystalline cells just beneath the surface of the abdomen.

The crystals shrink and expand as the muscles in the spider's abdomen contract; they often shrink when the spider is agitated, and they expand as it begins to relax.

The adaptive purpose of the shimmering effect is unclear, but researchers believe that it mimics the glistening appearance of raindrops or beads of dew, which could allow the spiders to blend in with their environment.

The reflective panels may also help to confuse predators, as this article explains:
The spider’s decorative patterning may seem like a dead give-away to predators, but for those looking to feast on this arachnid, the hunt might result in confusion and failure.
“Like a disco ball with lots of different mirrors, the reflective splotches on the spider’s abdomen probably scatter light and make it difficult for predators to see it,” says Robert Whyte, an honorary researcher in arachnology at the Queensland Museum.

There are at least 22 known species of mirror-ball spider, and their physical features can vary significantly. In some cases, the silver panels on the abdomen are accompanied by colorful, iridescent spots and scales, and the abdomen itself may have a red, orange, green, yellow, or beige appearance.

These spiders are widely distributed throughout the southern hemisphere. They can be found in the tropical and neotropical rainforests of South America, Southeast Asia, Africa, Australia, India, Sri Lanka, China, Singapore, and Madagascar.

Mirror-ball spiders are not aggressive toward humans, and there are virtually no recorded cases of humans being bitten by the spiders of this genus. They're also tiny, with most individuals measuring just 2-4mm long (roughly 1/10th of an inch), which means that their fangs are often too small to penetrate human skin.

THIS POST CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR Idiocracy AND Padak: Swimming to Sea. If you haven't seen those movies I'd reccomend you do so before reading this as they are great films and I wouldn't want to ruin then for you.
I think we need to start talking about Padak: Swimming to Sea.
I've been seeing Idiocracy gaining some traction in the Youtube algorithm lately, and honestly it doesnt surprise me, but I don't think it's enough. For those who don't know, Idiocracy is a movie about a US military librarian who is fundamentally average in every sense of the word being put into cryosleep and waking up hundreds of years later to find that humanity as a whole is in ruin. The average IQ has dipped down into the double digits, literal mountains of trash lay everywhere, politics has become more about the power and status of titles rather than the responsibility that comes with them, and everything has become a dustbowl because people are watering plants with a sports drink (it was what plants crave) rather than water. This is the movie that gave the world crocs, and it should be obvious why it's resurged in relevance in recent times what with the current political air. I undersfand that it's important to have a piece of media like this that helps us make light of the sort of hardships the world is currently facing to help us survive through it, but the thing about that is that everyone wants to survive. That simple fact has been engrained into our DNA since before we first clawed our way out of the ocean. But it takes a different kind of courage to stand up and say "You know what? I'm done surviving. I'm gonna LIVE. Or I'm gonna die trying." Because even if you DO die trying, even if you fail to obtain the life you wanted for yourself, even if all your effort seems to you like it amounted to nothing in the end, your efforts can pave the way for someone else to finish where you started. And that's exactly the sort of message Padak: Swimming to Sea presents us with.
Padal: Swimming to Sea is a korean animated movie about a blue mackeral named Padak who gets taken from the ocean by fishermen and sold to a seafood restaurant that likes to serve fish as fresh as possible. If youve ever seen those videos of sushi with fish heads that are still moving, its something like that. And even though the other fish in her tank (who were raised domestically specifically to be eaten) have accepted their situation and only care about delaying their deaths for as long as they can, Padak is determined to escape back to the ocean. Its a movie about hope in the face of hopelessness. A movie that reminds us that despair, desperation, and fear can bring out the best and the worst in people, and that people will take advantage of any situation just for a fleeting sense of security and control, no matter how deluded it is. It reminds us that going through the same experience and sharing the same pain means nothing if you refuse to understand each other. Its a movie about gnawing on the bars of your cage until your teeth break and your blood eats it's way through the metal. And it doesnt dance around the subject either. Within the first ten minutes past the opening credits, this movie takes its dark subject matter, slaps you across the face with it and says "pay attention now, we're just getting started".
"But what does this have to do with Idiocracy", you may ask. Well, Idiocracy is a live action production that uses crude humor, policital satire, and cartoon exaggeration to touch up on subjects like unchecked corporate corruption, human degredation, and the dangers of finding bliss within ignorance and apathy. Meanwhile Padak: Swimming to Sea is an animated feature that uses visceral surreal imagery, realistic violence and a beautiful original music score to tell a story about the clashing ideologies of doing whatever it takes to survive and fighting until your last breath for your freedom to live. Given the context of these interpretations, these two movies couldnt seem more different, but they both share the same message that as long as one person still holds that fire inside them, hope is never truly lost, and i think that's an idea thst we need to unite under now more than ever.
