skywings are hatched grey because skywing parents spend most of their time away from the nest. When mom and dad aren’t around, the little grey babies curl up and pretend to be rocks. It’s a bit like how fauns have spots because it makes them look like part of the forest floor. Fireless skywings have a blue tint to their baby scales, and firescales skywings look like hot coals
both rainwing and icewing infants are absolutely pathetic and rely on their parents for everything like baby birds.
baby sandwings spend most of their day buried in the sand, only being dug up to be fed.
leafwings are born with absolutely abysmal vision and rely on their leafspeak to guide them around
All mudwing hatchlings will break their clutchmates’ shells, the big wings just has a head start plus the strength to do it faster. This is how reed replaced clay if there’s only supposed to be one bigwings

I’ll bullet point what I have to say for clarity.
I’d imagine that some of their adult coloration show through as they start shedding scales, which based off how fast dragons develop in the book would only be a few weeks to a month or two. I’d imagine if there is ever a time where Firescales are more broadly accepted all of them sleeping together would look like a pile of hot coals, and that is such a fun idea.

I can’t help but imagining the looks of what look like an upset 40 year old baby, like a frogmouth bird.

I’d imagine when they are dug up they call it the feeding pit and have to feed the children like sharks in Jurassic park (that one scene with the food on a string above the tank) to avoid losing a finger.
This little guy is eating a scorpion.
I’d imagine a very confused plant could very easily tell a child they don’t know where their home is… and it behind them. But more often than not it would likely work.
The children’s parents are out of frame very disappointed…
I can imagine a dogpile of little Mudwings helping get the ‘runt’ of the sib group out of their egg, I also feel it would take much longer time to get all the dragons out if it was just the oldest sib helping!

Reminds me of how cats just show up with rats. I am sure many Nightwing dominate dragonets surprised their non-Nightwing parent by bringing home a rat!

A Scheming Bumblebee
The lack of that instinct may stem from a time that Seawings layed more eggs and ate some crab style. Although they never evolved it back after the need to do such things was lost.
