friendly reminder that:
- it’s okay to replace toxic friends with ones that make you happy and to leave the toxic ones behind
- mental illness is not an excuse to be a toxic friend and to hurt you! if someone excuses their behavior with their mental illness they are manipulating you
- it doesn’t make you a hypocrite if you ignored someone’s abusive and toxic behavior for the sake of your friendship and now want out
- it’s okay if you need someone else to realize that a friend is toxic and that what they do is hurting you
- it’s not your fault that they act the way they do, don’t let them make you believe that’s the case
- friends should never make you feel unworthy of their friendship, guilty or like you don’t do enough for them
- friends should never expect you to bend yourself backwards and hurt yourself just to so they feel better
- friends should never mock you, belittle you or make you feel like you are dumb or worthless
- if a friend makes you feel like you have to hide things or to pretend you are someone you’re not just so they won’t judge you, they are not a good friend
kill the notion that you have to destroy yourself just because you love someone and care for them. no one who truly cares for you will ask you to do that. toxic friends make us feel guilty for our own emotions and manipulate us into giving ourselves up for them, real friends would never do that.
it’s okay to replace someone who hurts you! it’s not making you a bad friend or a horrible person for leaving someone who hurts you.
your happiness is more important that other people’s and you don’t owe toxic friends a way to lure you back in with guilt and manipulation after you left them. cut all ties, for your own good.
!!!!!! “if a friend makes you feel like you have to hide things or to pretend you are someone you're not just so they won't judge you, they are not a good friend” !!!!!!
““Just because someone used to be an important part of your life doesn’t mean you have to continue to cling to the friendship when it begins to die. Your relationship was once something beautiful and fulfilling, and that’s a wonderful thing. But at a certain point, no amount of watering and nurturing will bring it back to full bloom. The fact that its deteriorated doesn’t mean you’re incapable of sustaining meaningful friendships. It doesn’t mean you’re not worth the time and effort it takes to maintain a connection. And it isn’t any sort of evidence that you’re a burden or a bad friend. It just means that the relationship has run its course. It means that you’ve evolved into different people or moved apart or just lost each other in the clutter and preoccupation of life’s everyday demands. But it isn’t a reflection on your value as a person and friend. It’s okay to mourn the loss of a relationship that used to have a special place in your heart. But if keeping yourself tethered to this person is causing more damage than healthy detachment and ongoing growth, it’s also okay to stop watering the friendship and let it die out. You don’t have to sacrifice your wellbeing for the sake of maintaining a relationship that doesn’t serve you anymore. You’re allowed to be picky when it comes to the people you let into your mental and physical space. You’re allowed to conserve your time and energy only for people who reciprocate. Because you deserve to feel seen and heard and cared for. You deserve relationships that make you feel fulfilled and connected. And no matter how long of a history you have with a person, you deserve to let go of any friendship that hurts you and forces you to prove your worth.””

The 9-to-5 lifestyle is not only “slightly inconvenience” for us night-owls, but it can also be harmful to our health. Differences between night-owls’ biological clock and social clock - otherwise known as “social jetlag” - greatly diminish our productivity and increase health risks.
As a fellow night-owl - who have survived 7:30 AM high-school classes, 8;30 AM uni classes and internships, as well as 7:00 AM jobs - I have compiled a list of personal “survival” tips that I hope can be helpful for other night-owls, especially during the current situation. I am not a physician, medical or education expert. These are my own personal experiences, and I would love to hear more from those who have insights into this problem as well!
1. Make sure you still have sufficient sleep
Being a night-owl does not mean you don’t need sleep. Establish a fixed time to go to bed, fixed time to wake up, and try to stick to them. Work your way backward from when your job/classes start to determine when you need to go to sleep. Always make sure you have a proper amount of sleeping time to keep yourself healthy and functional.
2. Plan your days based on the tasks’ complexity
When it comes to daily planning, I always divide my tasks into morning, afternoon, or night tasks, based on how complicated - or mentally demanding - they are. It usually looks like this:
The rule for my planning:
Simple, mindless tasks are done in the morning. This will create a working mindset and momentum for the rest of your day. Then, the afternoon is where your day will truly begin. This is when the slightly more complicated tasks are tackled, such as lab reports, or reading assignments. After dinner, the most complicated tasks will be completed at night, when your productivity is at its maximum. The period of time right before bedtime will be used for mostly artsy/ leisure activities- anything light to ease your brain into falling asleep.
3. Set aside 15-30 minutes before bed to free your mind of any thoughts that might prevent you from falling asleep
My mind is super loud at night, especially when I’m trying to go to sleep. All kinds of thoughts would invade my head, from plans, homework problems, to just random brain-vomits. This is why this small period of time is so important. It basically serves as a brain-dump, a place to let you go through all the thoughts you might have so that you won’t be disturbed by them later. It’s also a great time for self-reflection/ journaling as well!
4. If you have early classes, prepare for them in advance
This will reduce the pressure to follow morning lectures when your biological clock hasn’t caught up yet. Preparing for them in advance also makes it so much easier to understand and absorb new information. This is also super helpful for in-class quizzes/ clicker questions that demand you to understand the topic on the spot. To make early classes even more enjoyable, record the lecture and revisit it later in the day.
5. Give your body time to wake up
Set an alarm for 15 minutes before your planned wake-up time. Don’t worry, you don’t have to wake up just yet. This period of time is for your body to adjust from sleeping/resting state to waking up. And this includes every organ from the brain, liver, to the heart. Jolting awake right as the alarm goes off is risk-inducing to your physical and mental health. Drink a cup of water during these 15 minutes. Go through your phone for a bit. Let your eyes adjust to the sunlight.
6. Make your mornings as enjoyable as possible
Blast music. Have fancy coffee. Open your windows for that ethereal sunrise light and fresh air. Meal-prep your breakfast. Plan your outfits and pack your bags the night before. Schedule to go to classes with your friends. Dance in your bathroom. Find things that can spark joy in you and incorporate them into your mornings - you don’t have to wake up miserable.
7. Take small naps during the day
If you need these power naps, it’s best to keep them short, about 10-20 minutes. Even if you don’t completely fall asleep during the 10 minutes, closing your eyes and letting your body and mind rest for a bit is enough to re-energize yourself. Also, try not to have these naps after 4:00 PM - it will mess up your biological clock. And no caffeine after that as well!
Feel free to add your own tips too! It would be greatly appreciated.
Of course, there is a long road until educational institutions and companies recognize the biological uniqueness of night-owls and make proper changes to provide a healthy, productive schedule for everyone. In the meantime, we can try to make compromises to play to our advantages and make the best out of our abilities.
Good luck to my fellow night-owls out there. I love you all 💕
Part of my recent efforts to shape my life up both academically and personally include a new gym routine but I find it difficult to know what to do nutritionally. And even harder to keep the habit up (it seems like clean eating is so expensive). What tips do you have for a college student to stay motivated to make a lifestyle change like this and kick the laziness out of the way?
You’re not wrong that clean eating can be expensive and also challenging to maintain. But it can also be done with a little practice and patience. Check the “Clean Eating 101” link up top on my blog for a whole list of food ideas. Then find what is practical and affordable for your day to day and try to implement them into your diet. It does not have to be a 100% switch all at once. Maybe it’s just one meal a day to start or cut an unhealthy choice out of each meal and replace it with a healthy one. An apple or orange for a sweet treat rather than junk foods. Steamer bags of veggies are pretty inexpensive, raw baby carrots, nut butters, trail mix. Make a bag of quinoa or cous cous and mix it some of the steamed veggies. A dozen eggs are pretty cost effective and can be cooked in numerous ways. A good rule of thumb is the fewer ingredients in it the better. And lastly WATER WATER WATER! it’s potentially free or cheap if you prefer bottled. Get rid of sodas and costly sugary beverages. Use the money you save on those to put towards better foods. As far as keeping the habit up, you just have to want it bad enough to do it even when you don’t feel like it. I’ve found that eating less junk and better foods also helps you feel more energized and motivated to keep up regular workouts. Give it time and don’t feel like you can’t miss a day or eat some treats now and then or you’ll be miserable and never stick with it. Hope some of this helps, all the best!!

How to make your mornings easier
So remember how I vowed to never take an 8AM again and then I did? Well I swore to myself never again. So I have a 9AM now haha. Living an hour away from campus idk why I do this to myself but hey gotta get that edumacation somehow.
Anyways, I have a lot of experience with this early morning thing, especially with depression and icy weather and rainy weather (all 3 make you wanna sleep in so much more) so here are some tips to make your mornings smoother, less chaotic, and maybe even more enjoyable!
Give yourself at least an hour in the mornings. Trust me. The more time you have the better it is. You won't feel stressed or rushed and you'll have time to wake up before driving
M U S I C. Seriously. This like makes mornings 1000x better. Put in some earbuds or blast that shit and have fun. Dance and jump and head bang while getting ready
Make or buy coffee the day before and put it in the fridge or something. Having coffee already made speeds up the routine and it's a nice little treat
Lay out your outfit the night before or at least plan it and know where everything is. Saves so much time even if you are the kind to just grab and go. I am like that. Just grab a shirt and pants and go. But laying it out the night before makes me feel accomplished and in the morning I'm like oh!
"I'll just get gas in the morning" is the worst lie. You'll hate yourself in the morning as that morning will be the one where you are running late and it is super chaotic. Get gas on your way home
Pack your bag for the next day WHEN YOU GET HOME. Don't wait. Mornings are groggy and not the best and you are bound to forget SOMETHING. So pack as soon as you can
Use an alarm you like. "But Lauren, if I like it I won't wake up!" It doesn't have to be peaceful. It can be straight bag pipes and screamo with a hurricane in the background. But if you like it, you'll be happier when waking up
If you know it's going to be cold in the morning, leave the fans off
Two words for you: overnight oats. Cheap, easy, and delicious. "But I don't like yogurt. I am lactose intolerant. I don't like Chia seeds. But..." thousands of recipes my dudes. Thousands. I hate yogurt and am lactose intolerant and hate most fruits. So I use oats, almond milk (vanilla flavored), vanilla extract, cinnamon, coco powder with some sugar mixed in, honey, and if I'm feeling really frisky, some flax seeds. Mix that baby up and stick it in the fridge and voila! A tasty and fast breakfast! You can even eat it on the go or blend it to make a smoothie!
If there's dew or ice, turn your car on like 10 minutes before you leave
Make a routine that keeps things steady and flowing towards the door. Dress, bathroom, breakfast, go
Coffee does not make a great breakfast
Put water next to your bed and drink it first thing in the morning
Hair and makeup can be done before class
Try to get to class half an hour early or more. This gives you time to review and prepare for class
If you have time, try some excercise! A jog, pushups, yoga, etc. It's a great way to get early morning serotonin and energy as well as feel better through the day
Take care of your animals before you eat to make sure you don't forget
If you bring lunch, pack it the night before
Set an alarm for bedtime and listen to it. When your bedtime alarm rings, put the phone or book down and sleep
If you wake up before your alarm, stay up if you have less than 30 minutes before it goes off
You can try burning incense in the mornings. Orange, lemon, and basically any citrus scent is known to improve your mood and help with energy
Consider buying a second phone charger that stays in your car so you don't have to worry about that
Simplify your skin care routine or modify it for the PM
Night showers are now your new beat friend
No you won't wake up extra early to finish that assignment. Just do it now
If you like hot coffee, prep the coffee maker the night before and set it to start when your alarm goes off especially if you sleep near the kitchen. You'll smell it
If you need to help calm your anxiety over your mornings, make a check list with everything to make sure you don't miss anything
Keep your keys in the same spot
If you have a dog, walk them before leaving or feed them when you get up. They catch onto patterns fast and will wake you up if you don't want to get up
Wake up at the same time during the week. Consistency allows you to fall into the patterns and allows you to get used to it faster and easier. And on days you don't have to leave until like 10, you get extra time
reblog to save a life (including mine when school starts)
I already do some of these things and will have to start taking some of these tips for myself! I love waking up early in the morning to get some extra tasks done and start my day with a productive tone. Reblogging this to save my own life and maybe someone else’s
