For whom was this spring created (if I cannot spend it with you)?
Special thanks to @alamangoes for illustrating this idea so well and blowing me and @botanycrewmember out of the water every time she sent us an update!
Reference and research under the link!
These are the references that we sent to Stes before we commissioned her. We just thought it was neat to share <3
For the general silhouette and cut of the clothes, we had references of paintings & sculptures from the Southern-Northern Dynasty and early Sui Dynasty. The clothing patterns are inspired by the characters’ names (waves from Gu Hengbo’s “bo” and clouds from Yuan Zixiao’s “xiao”).
Gu Hengbo’s hairstyle is taken directly from the novel, described as a high bun held up with strings of jade beads; Yuan Zixao’s hairstyle is a simple period-appropriate topknot that allows for easy maintenance during travels.
Gu Hengbo’s sword, Tian Wei Shei Chun, is based on a replica of a sword forged in the 6th century; the charm on the sword hilt is a traditional Chinese bow that we decided is made by Yuan Ying for his shimei.
Yuan Zixiao’s fingertips are stained with ink due to her role as an archivist; the water and cloud motifs in the background are inspired by illustrations from the Shan Hai Jing, emphasizing the distance and yearning between the two characters
I like the nodding emoji 🙂↕️ for how at peace it is. when I use it I feel like a wise sage who has reached an enlightened truth of the universe. mmmm 🙂↕️ monkey
that poll going around of the guy who thought "people only eat tofu as a bit because they're deranged vegans" or whatever really crystalizes something that i have never been able to precisely say - which is "a nonzero fraction of people who start picky-eater discourse just happen to precisely hate those foods which are not from north america and refuse to introspect on this whatsoever"
In contrast some people say "there aren't any picky eaters in Asia 🙄" but this is laughably untrue. I have a cousin in India who refused until his 20s to eat anything in a sauce. as you can imagine in India this was difficult. he basically had to pick things out of curry and wipe them dry
this fucking sucks. I got soul-bonded to a living weapon who takes the form of a beautiful girl. But she has no fucking joie de vivre about it. I keep trying to do combined dramatic attack cries but she’s all like. “No that’s embarrassing” and “just kill him, don’t waste time.” she won’t even let me name her finishing move. I think she only has a finishing move because it’s just a reliable path of least resistance. This fucking sucks
is it worth it to continue reading hikaru ga shinda natsu/the summer hikaru died even though i dont vibe w the scifi thriller/pseudo shonen powerscaling arc (closing the holes)
the problem with visual novels is that they are novels, but they are almost exclusively sold on video game distribution platforms, which means that they're novels being read by gamers who are by and large entirely unequipped to critique that medium
ive been caught on priv comparing hgsn to higurashi and for the first 4 or 5ish volumes that may actually have been such an apt comparison but ive only seen through abt 3 loops of higurashi to say and i sort of really liked the mundaneity of small town eerieness as a backdrop for horror
also i sorta dislike how it went full shonen manga past those volumes ngl
on a side note if higurashi ever gets readapted for tv again, i want Everyone involved in adapting hgsn to be involved bc they Really tapped into every horror aesthetic in the last decade to deliver this thing on a silver platter AND got to show it on national tv

“your friend is dead, and their corpse is inhabited by something only you can see for what it truly is" is already good horror. but "you begin to love the thing that wears their face"? the blasphemy of it. terror turning into desire. grief turning into longing. being enticed by what should repel you. it twists the knife deeper, because the horror is not based on deception anymore. the fear comes from recognizing the monster in its raw form and finding beauty there. you're not clinging to scraps of your friend, you're surrendering to something other, something wrong, and loving it. you're not holding onto a ghost of the past, it’s the monster itself that you choose
how do people mask through a conversation they dont give a shit abt.
at a doctors appointment, i was talking abt liking cats and wanting one. but bc of my allergic rhinitis, she kept telling me not to get one. i jokingly looked over to my mom (who, for reasons i will not get into, was in the room w me for the appointment) and said "well, i've always wanted a tortoise"
and then the doctor proceeded to try and sell me on the idea of getting one and how to keep it. and i had to feign interest the whole time while trying to subtly signal that maybe she should just get on with the prescription.
i Have wanted a tortoise bc i used to startle easy with physical touch. but like. can we please get a move on, its 11pm.
