Another relationship that I really thought a lot about. I know Xiao Jun and Qiao are end game, but Pao was something else. Can you imagine somebody standing by you in your lowest troughs? Pao and Qiao may have been one of the most beautiful surprises of the film, but I appreciated that kind of presence. Xiao Jun and Qiaoâs dalliance were going to end inevitably. As all star-crossed tragedies go, Xiao Jun and Qiao meet and part, several times in the film. Encounters with other people similarly reflect real life circumstances. Chances are, when you part ways with an important figure, youâll meet other prominent ones. Pao was a really prominent person in Qiaoâs life, no matter how long while their end dragged on.

Comrades: Almost a Love Story (1996)
Not many people have even seen the movie and everyone understandably talks more about in the mood for love but comrades almost a love story always gets me.
Every now and then I think about that scene when the feds show Maggie Cheng her dead husband and she asks to turn him over so she can see the tattoo he got as an inside joke with her. And she smiles and tries to laugh but no one around her is laughing, and no one else is in on the joke or ever will be again because the joke is over. She's stuck in a foreign country she barely speaks the language of, all alone because the one person she came here with is dead, and he's the only one who would have laughed with her. She tries to point to it, like the joke will explain itself to them and make them magically understand and empathize with who he was to her and what she's lost and it just doesn't work so she just breaks down crying instead but she still has to do that alone.
Anyway I think about that scene all the time.
Normal groceries like milk or bread or whatever running out is whatever. Just anotha day. But when stuff like salt or cooking oil or rice runs out it feels like Youâre supposed to be here for me and youâre leaving. Youâre just like everyone else
The most unrealistic part of The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion is the fact that there is such a concentrated number of Young Men of Quality in a single location send tweet
I've seen a bunch of "fandom etiquette" posts on my dash today and I'm going to say something that is maybe going to be unpopular but;
The absolutely pervasive mentality that unwanted criticism or critique shouldn't be given and should be ignored is why fans of color don't stay in fan spaces.
And I am not going to mince words here:
A lot of you are racist. A lot of your fan works are racist.
That might have been difficult to hear. And if it was, you should probably reflect on why that was.
"Fandom etiquette" has created a space where fans of color either bite our tongues and eventually leave or say something, get dogged on, and then eventually leave.
So much of "fandom etiquette" seems to be about insulating creatives from Feeling Bad and hostility to any kind of negative feedback is a pretty big contributor to why bigotry festers in these spaces.
#imo the potluck analogy applies- it would be rude to critique someone's icing technique at a potluck bc it wasn't as good as at the bakery #but if they had decorated their cupcakes w hate symbols it wouldn't be rude to tell them that's gross and gtfo #in fact it would be inappropriate to NOT say anything in that situation #or to complain that another guest who did point it out was 'ruining everyone's potluck' #and pointing out racism in fan works is 100% the second thing not the first! (via destructions-daughter)
sorry for the mixed signals I donât know what I want or what Iâm doing mostly

Yâall rereading Half a Soul (Olivia Atwater) for the nth time and Lady Carroway really deserves a fucking medal for her patience. (And the Viscount I guess by extension)
You mean to tell me her son came back from the war, all torn up and shit, and suddenly the Lord Sorcier is hanging around demanding his help with french translations and being utterly unbearable to polite company? And she just keeps letting him come back, keeps inviting him to shit? Fully just lets Albert drag around his social outcast bestie to every function, family and social? Beautiful, amazing, iconic. The fact that her attempts at setting him up with Dora keep getting ruined at every opportunity and yet she backs down the minute she realizes *why*? The patience she has for her son and his two social outcast besties is so fucking funny. What does she mean she âwouldâve loved to have Dora as a daughterâ, Elias is practically also her son at this point, thats absolutely her daughter now.
Is Half a Soul clearly an originally self-published early novel with weird pacing and sometimes inconsistent character voice when the author wants to hammer home a theme or lean into a trope? Yes. BUT is "I did not come here only to dance. I came here only to dance with you. It is quite a different thing" the height of romance? Also yes. This is up there with the Pride and Prejudice hand flex. I adore this questionably edited book.
An incomplete list of things I also love:
Literally the entire dance scene. Give me an introverted magician who makes fairy lights at the ball and waltzes all night.
All the hugs and late night magical chats.
Specifically the rain hug.
"Everyone does things sometimes which they do not wish to do. Even magicians." #me when I have to do hard things
Elias's big enemies to lovers character flaw is that he's kind of a dick when overwhelmed, exhausted, and sad. #relatable
Dora and Elias being quietly traumatized, e.g., Dora's "I will doll my way out of this situation" and Elias's "oops, spilled your drink on you when I was startled definitely not as a PTSD reaction."
"You have to do your bit to make the world a better place. You also need to take breaks with your friends and shouldn't feel guilty about that." is a solid theme.
Likable side characters with their own agendas! Love Albert quietly having his own romance in the corner, all of the Carroways, and Dora's relationship with Vanessa.
Dora and Albert bullying Elias in French.
Albert accidentally bargaining with a faerie to defeat NapolĂŠon (cost: make it home to his mother alive).
Elias trying true love's kiss to revive Dora.
"If you dance with Dora twice you have to marry her." Elias: "don't threaten me with a good time."
ohhh socially awkward female protagonist with no concern for polite society, who somehow captures the attentions of a pathetic pretty man raised in the fae realm and escaped into the mortal realm where he made a name for himself all by being herself ohh how i love you

Author: Butterfly's Shadow Beneath the Moon / Yue Xia Die Ying
Fl: I know you are hiding something fess up, husband......
Ml: I see that this dynasty is riddled with holes and sinking into ruin, Ban Hua, I am an ambitious man, I- (Talking about staging a coup and overthrowing the current Imperial dynasty- fl is an Junzhu of imperial blood)
Fl: Ohhhh are you going to be the emperor?? Niceeee- I get to be the empress!! When are we starting???
Ml: ??????
Fl: * has been having prophetic dreams of ml in dragon robes for more than a year* ahem, so-
Bonus content-
Fl: So you didn't silence us when we saw you smuggling weapons?? Is it bc I was pretty??
Ml: Yes, my hua hua is very pretty (It is definitely not bc I thought you and your little bro were too stupid to notice bc you would make me sleep in the couch If I admit to it)
"Your eldest brother is straightforward, clever but inflexible. Your second brother is even more simple-minded, lacking the resolve to shoulder great responsibilities. As for the third, heâs too mild and overly shrewdâyet excessive shrewdness makes for an unwise ruler. And the fourth..." At the mention of Yun Yanze, Emperor Longfeng looked at Prince Chen. "His temperament is the least suited for the throne among all of you." "You are my beloved son, with the makings of an emperor."
The emperor might favour chen wang excessively but he knows all of his kids well
And honestly if any of his other sons were more qualified to be an emperor, he would definitely let them rule but pave a safe path for his beloved consort and their son
But ofc that doesn't matter bc chen wang is genuinely a kind person despite that personality of his
"Jiuzhu, smash it." Empress Su glanced at the letter's contents. "Break whatever you likeâlet's hear the sound and vent some frustration." "Your Majesty, that's not the right way to settle accounts." Jiuzhu picked up a white-glazed vase but carefully set it back down. "Since you are the mistress of the inner palace, doesnât that mean everything here belongs to you? Rather than smashing these fine things, why not take them away? Such treasures shouldnât go to waste." Empress Su stared at her daughter-in-law in astonishment. Between the two of them, who was the one raised in a merchant family? "Take them, then." Empress Su nodded. These exquisite porcelain pieces were indeed too precious to destroy.
Lol at Jiuzhu's penny pinching habits rearing their head again
He couldn't bear the thought of dimming the adoration in this earnest girl who'd rushed toward him with such hope. He refused to tarnish the radiant prince she believed in, or shatter the beauty she saw. Some claimed love meant baring one's ugliest self to another. But why? Why tear yourself open just for momentary catharsis, heedless of whether it might wound the one who cherished you? Why couldn't love mean striving to be the best you could be for them? His silly, guileless Xiaozhu gazed at him with stars in her eyes. What manner of beast would he be to extinguish that light?
The novel is all comedy and suddenly drops banger lines like these
Also the whole arc with consort dowager zhao and her sweetheart is so emotional especially with jiuzhu and chen wang reuniting them in death via cenotaphs
