just got my One ☝️ Viewing Of Falsettoland As Recorded For The Theatre On Film & Tape Archives, july 8th 1990 at playwrights horizons, as introduced with that VHS font ahead of the recording, viewed on a large rgb monitor w the scanlines & all god bless us
really really fun simply to See Things And People even when, god fucking bless again, the Sung Through Musical of it means so much is available through Official Audio Recording alone. quickly here's what im recalling & jotting down. had a great time. came armed with paper towels & napkins & here & there wept through 3 of the paper towels, including shedding a tear in the opening number just via the delights of this experience and thinking about what all was to come
beginning with only the like little Traffic Direction orange lit-up batons visible, definitely like creating Visuals with moving those around, swinging some arcs, directing them at the audience like 👀 style, then of course the fun of kicking into gear Homosexuallll (at marvin) & everyone joining in Livelily, bringing set pieces, doing some leaping about (like with the high school musical Poster Simultaneous Leap (bless the multiple camera film photos Takes of this) (except marvin, keeping center / downstage)
everyone being Introduced like coming up to marvin there as he sings out, and indeed of course coming up and Going Away, there goes your son on not the weekends, trina coming up then whizzer for an arm around them on [i had a wife, i had a lover] then extricating themselves from that & walking off in reverse order on [he ran for cover, she i divorced], singing to mendel for the next bit into My Psychiatrist, also some fun perfunctory handshakes w mendel, introducing the friends who come up for a hug which is fun, whizzer way in the back But I Don't Have A Lover Anymore, Oh My God
love that part & that the When Am I Gonna Get Over This shifts all the way to I'm Never (Fully) Getting Over This & Would Do It Again & Again & Again
just so fun to See Things Happen. how marvin trina & mendel are interacting in this initial Bar Mitzvah Arguing while jason is in the corner here listening to his walk[er]man but then also sometimes fully taking it off to listen anyway. and in the last bit jason just like flopped fully back sideways in the chair inelegantly wriggling along to the music while all the adults look at him and sing about him & the year of the child
jason is just delightfully like "is a middle schooler that small? my gosh" & generally inelegant & like introspectively distracted. it's fantastic. yellow shoes & tee as his default outfit, great
everyone and their sunglasses in the baseball game. i adore the '80s (though it's 1990. but not the 1981-2 Setting, anyway) fashion, mendel & trina's Workout Outfits are fantastic. always be running around like that even when not actually running
a joy to watch the adults on the bleachers all getting to interact with each other right there, two rows w (our) left to right marvin / dr. charlotte / cordelia upper row, then mendel & trina. everyone's sunglases, again. mendel cupping his mouth to yell SANDY KOUFAX then getting up mid those verses & again amplifying HANK GREENBERG & trina kind of coming to collect & herd him back. crushing it as like the humorous idiosyncratic sitcom parents
marvin Standing when we pull back to see that whizzer has also now walked in & is standing slightly stage left (facing the audience) like the No Discretion™ even if it's Standing Up In Spirit. god bless
i Had thought of this prior but only recently, that presumably mendel has never actually met whizzer, re: also can't know if this wasn't a mistake or a deliberate layer of joke that was changed, but mendel saying it's like Seeing treyf....but you have whizzer mostly doing the polititudes with all the other adults, marvin leaning in with a [Say Hello through polite handshake with each other] as whizzer's greeting charlotte & cordelia, & generally kind of falling all over the place No Dignified Discretion as this is going on & he's generally reaching & trying to encourage Sit In Front Of Me, as whizzer sits on the Other end of the front row & marvin has the little outward Oh Cmon indignation reaction about it; Literally reaching across everyone in time for the Run My Hands Through It, with everyone Else but whizzer reacting, dr charlotte who he's Most reaching / leaning across looking at his arm right there like :| & everyone looking over / behind themselves like :/ 🤨 and doing this again a little extra pointedly sideeyeing style for We're Watching Marvin Blow Kisses
whizzer going over to Demonstrate / Confer with jason such that marvin can so casually leave the bleacher spot to walk around & over to him just to confer about the Baseball Potential he's so invested in as a baseball hater....that when they do the [marvin smacking whizzer on the arm/shoulder who does it back] you have like an immediate Reaction of some surprise / taken aback / minor frustration at reflexive Dynamic Engagement like that, especially from whizzer naturally
the adults then like leaning into more of the General Dynamic more readily & all basically having fun as the song wraps up such that they're all delighted & having a great time right as it ends & Jason Hit The Ball, with the one more joke of another slightly delayed reaction in them all going oh shit wait Popping Up RUN!!!!! (with also the potential joke of not figuring they'd even need to give this prompt. we've all been there (playing baseball but you don't really know how))

as we all already knew though: whizzer & marvin's racquetball outfits are the star of the show. this is everything
marvin's is again like. the Total Indignity is ofc an exaggeration and affectionate but like. this loose grey polo which comes Pre Sweatstained wetted on the chest / around the armpits, the loud print loose shorts down below the knees, the goggles, bright blue ceruleanesque shoes? it's kind of a slay especially re: say trans guy fashion
whizzer is slaying. he IS serving. it's amazing already in photographic contrast with marvin's getup (& marvin just being shorter also enhances it) but In Motion in its own right is kind of a wonder. my man's short shorts like it's all legs out there. standing and saluting. Your Serve, truly
i love the end of that too and their running around was great to See in addition, while singing all this. whizzer turning around on the spot as the Four Walls! goes around & marvin is definitely running all around him chasing after it
going to the corner of the stage / the wings for props which was a towel and im like oh whizzer's still over there? what else we got? a water bottle, which then he definitely for real from a good several inches out squirts some out into marvin's mouth. homosexuals....and truly the playfulness going on in the scene was lively and charming
again also lively and charming to See dr. charlotte & cordelia. this So This Is Kosher cookbook propped up at this Kitchen Station setpiece, a chair, cordelia coming over to take her hair down & give a shoulder massage
chip zien Is so a bit short like it's great. trina & marvin arguing but it Is like lower stakes "oh great we're divorced & actually more directly arguing about what we're arguing about" is fun & funny like the bit of pettiness indeed; mendel indeed more oft like jason like jeez these guys, including thusly as asides to jason. his own outfit like baggy pants & baggy longish blue shirt which facilitates that when the both of them pull the back of their shirts over their heads in the course of Everyone Hates His Parents they leave them up for the ensuing dance bit / through the end of the song. really delightful lmao & we've all been there (the funny little guy person in a kid's sphere who is less demanding, more flexibly interacting along the kid's terms) and what a fun number. the intro alone, i cherish it
whizzer's legs cheered me up during racquetball again. for weeks and years out there and like the falling down that had to be going on in this sequence and taking some time getting up like this is the more, i believe, fashion of the time anyway like precious little inseam out here as we kinda pivot around knees out & take our time getting up, respectfully, still serving. i just mean it about these outfits being the star of the show because what other conclusion is there. But Anyway, Really: returning to the downstagest stage rightest corner again as we did last time, whizzer kind of doubled over facing away from us, then lingering in this moment w marvin in profile with a hand on his arm & then their walking off downstage / out of the light, like. you sure can't be distracted the whole time
holding to the ground, my god, im all about it all the time, that But That's My Life on the falsettoland album, aughhh....trina is so fun Seeing also, as with everyone, her little expressions in all these moments & situations, & this is staged simply with her In Front Of The Curtain that's pulled all the way across the stage (with us momentarily shown whizzer w dr. charlotte, providing further context) & moving gradually from stage right to left. that But Then There's More / So Many More / There's Always More, falsettos you are so These People Escaping The Constraint / Confinement of, say, what families Were to me, and this paired with But That's My Life / He Shared My Life / Yes That's My Life....not to shift much ever into Complaining About Reviews but Some sometimes were like "i think falsettoland is good but too sweet" like okay sure opinions but that also it's like it Can Be Different That Way when a) yeah this is 9 years later irl but 1 in-universe but more a blend of these things & we get to presume People Have Changed (& esp that in falsettoland produced on its own like. it's been 82 years since you saw march of the falsettos) & here we're really Only arguing about a bar mitzvah already but then also the b) going like "but everyone getting so Over Their Bitchiness partway through!!" like yeah i. think that makes complete sense. i think we can e.g. Compare this to trina just earlier admitting to feeling petty about marvin & whizzer being together again & she can only get over it later after a triumph & not liking whizzer but now having to Try to not care about him But. like i think people can have a different perspective & emotional situation Almost All At Once / so short term here, for the reason that they do. Anyway.
trina opening the curtain onto the full Hospital Room Setup, & in her last "everything will be all right" she looks at whizzer for a lingering moment like "everything will be all........" before walking down/offstage without finishing it. you do enjoy the whizzer & trina alignment and you're me
stop everything. i was going sort of chronologically but i have blown, lol, right past What More Can I Say. not at all because i forgot it. it's so funny like multiple Clippings about william finn's self-critical streak & like thinking everything's terrible & "oh i thought march of the falsettos was gonna be a mess until there was an audience finally who loved it like wait nvm" or "it was hard writing falsettoland i didn't like anything i was doing until suddenly somewhere along the line, i did though" and one bit where he's like omgg what more can i say is sooo embarrassinnnng its lyric-y lyric....and im like hell yeah it is brother lmao but im all about it. a downtempo straightforward simple sweet love song which In Any Other Context im sure would i not enjoy / just kind of tune out but in this case i am gripped. i am probably crying. and because of This Very Context and how like that relative simplicity & slow sweet calm moment that this is vs marvin as more usually to us / prior someone who Would be sort of tripping falling over themself & all clever with it & everything but now just like kind of calmed down stripped down to this & singing directly enough about How Can I Even Put It & im Not all dignified & discreet & clever & caring about winning & breakfast & anything & thank god as it were. and again Seeing This like painting this Moment of simply "wow this is just an ode to what this is because it's so good" and that context of how indeed things have changed just a bit to be calmer and only Playing vs any of these games are a fight that Needs To Be Won or anything like that. all i want is you anything you do is all right. Yes give me this downtempo direct love song, it turns out, in this particular case, & im crying
staging is simply sung from marvin sitting up in bed, lighting across them like Through Windowblinds, whizzer is lying beside him the whole time asleep or mostly asleep which was a surprise bc the image i'd seen of this it seems he was awake, suppose it sure can vary though. tits out like in the image, serving i said
and like again i was half-expecting like maybe he mostly wakes up at one point, but rather what happens is readjusting while mostly asleep to wiggle over until he's lying with his head up against marvin's side, marvin putting his arm around him, this little surprise difference was slightly devastating 👍 just so charming so sweet killed me thanks
speaking of tits out are you proud to serve it, mid song / in that later stretch marvin goes to, i figured, pull the blankets up further around whizzer, but what he does then is pause, then lift the blankets and look down in there, and laugh/smile to himself and replace them lmao, audience laughs as well, figure that was still the original intention to the maneuver but life is never what you planned. likewise fun little surprise Go Figure details for us and the audience experience
and indeed just seeing it emphasizing the 😭😭😭 for me. marvin just clearly having this quietly Happy time singing this out in this moment. the organic cuddling taking me out. ending with whizzer having rolled over again a bit splayed out w his arms partly over the edge of the bed, marvin now rolling over to lie down too, thank you william finn for your cringe comp
Back To Where We Were: whizzer is so basically cheerful in Days Like This interacting with everyone from his bed just all smiles & good humor for everybody like and sure seeming more along the lines of This Is The Genuine Reaction Of This Personality than like strained utter façade, even as of course Everyone's good cheer is both genuine but also at all an active effort & strained by worry. audience laughing when jason runs in with Chess to plop down in front of whizzer like Gee You Look Awful, no one outwardly dampened by this though, everyone greeted & greeting warmly & like you can tell like the Bleachers At Their Best yep everyone coming together more cohesively around here. marvin bringing a box of chocolates, various foods indeed including a metal bowl of chicken soup (me when a book i was reading mentioned actor & ally estelle getty i believe, as known from the golden girls for one, initially bringing chicken soup in on theatre shows for people getting sick with aids before she really like understood that situation further. i said "me when" like well i think i did get teary yeah) and trina is bringing in a houseplant when she & mendel arrive, making things lovely. whizzer looking like fully Up And Back at people standing behind his bed, the good humor. we are vivacious
that reminds me also, back to the opening number actually, we ended that with the Spinny Office Chair prop turning out to have like sufficient platforms & handlebars attached that the whole cast could end like gathered up beside & behind it & Roll Forward together, then peel off in a line one after another, that was fun for sure
yeah it's :(((( jason's little "what??" at We Don't Know When Or If He'll Ever Get Better....trina sitting talking to jason more hesitantly but undistractedly about the bar mitzvah now, mendel like stepping in for this Subject as almost a mini aside, turning jason around, but jason Then turns around & he & trina stare at each other for a long while through the exchange until after jason goes like Oh Great NOW It's All My Decision when he turns away facing upstage, and his No!s to both Having or Canceling the bar mitzvah are Small, before running off, this One bit of dialogue where mendel goes "well, i handled that beautifully" and goes up to trina who we can see like visibly is fighting off tears some there. everything will be all right
and as mentioned in other sources Yeah how whizzer is so like comforting marvin in four unlikely lovers, and yet that like, they're clearly interacting Fine, half playing cards, marvin sitting on the side of the bed and generally like looking Out along the line of the bed, introspective & Unhappy in this parallel to his looking out along the line of the bed in What More Can I Say....but like both of them still in Relatively good spirits in this moment being together & both kind of joking, whizzer particularly with the more theatrical kind of Humorous Expressiveness going on, but marvin leaning into this like "huh? Huh?? :]" leaning in to push A Reaction after his Go To Sleep, Time I Met A Sailor joke, and whizzer being like 9w9 shove / Oh You / Get Outta Here type gesture about it, but that like yeah rather than it seeming like oh whizzer has to retreat inward to muster Comforting Marvin it's like nah he's like all the more drawn out realizing marvin does keep like shifting into this pensivity and so dropping the pretense of card game goings on to hold him. and you KNOW what it is when dr charlotte & cordelia arrive: Sweet
and you do also know what it is, jason praying, the miracle of judaism....simply staged standing in one place, the way that You Too, The Audience can get in on this by wondering like. Can he survive? Can this earnest prayer lead to one man not dying? just out of like, well, you may be in 2025 & know the plot yeah & it doesn't require you Almost Believe In God Days Like This to still wonder bc that's sure how it is, isn't it, even in such situations you don't Know what'll happen till it's happened. and obviously just like, the prayers, the chicken soup, the people's feelings, the what Are you gonna do
seeing You Gotta Die Sometime sure was Something too, An Added Element In All Of This....sure a subtle bit of makeup going on in these later scenes for this slightly paler sicker look, here where even Standing Up Walking Around A Bit had the drama of deliberation, effort....and the drama of the song no matter what, really just singing it out like yep This Too feels very open, put out there. and live theatre, different performances....the final round of You Gotta Die Sometime, Sometime including the initial one slightly shouted, the last one slightly sobbed, the others in between, sung. Whew
and sitting at the foot of his bed (angled diagonally, the foot towards downstage right) facing upstage, we just did That, then the door (also kinda facing him) opens and it's jason standing there and indeed another snippet of dialogue in simply going "jason!"
and then things sure spring to life. the Whole Group in form. it's just like what you'd imagine, the energy, everyone is setting everything up, marvin is already throwing the prayer shawl on whizzer as he announces he has it, greetings warmer than ever. i was wondering in that one group pic "what's everyone looking at? where's trina?" well, taking their picture, like Smile, and they took Another, Sillier one like augh lmaooo & then as everything's going on all at once like trina's setting things up & whizzer looks at the camera & there's this moment where whizzer goes "trina" and takes her picture right there. all so delightful and charming and vivacious and augh
and getting to end in a line around jason in the center, people looking across at each other, marvin and whizzer looking at each other, then everyone leaving one by one (starting with whizzer) to go right into marvin staying where he is to sing What Would I Do
and it's just simple and Really Good how whizzer walks in in his opening sequence outfit again, facing marvin the whole time, marvin turning to face him, they sing like that in profile facing each other that full stretch and it's like Augh Wow visible emotionality maybe slightly towards crying like aughh wowww againnn until whizzer steps back out of the light & walks off....people stepping into the light towards marvin indeed starting with jason, with marvin turning around to face upstage and everyone huddling up around him and in this dimmed blue lighting while mendel comes a bit downstage lit to sing our very finale before everyone slowly files off in that darkened blue lighting
