What do you mean when Lestat was literally split in two, when he was minutes away from dying, when he was surrounded by the shadows of his abusers and those he wronged, his decaying and failing mind went back to Louis again and again and again like it was the only beacon of light in his self-deprecating, larger-than-life, spectacular supposed failure of an existence. What do you mean Louis was the one presence that kept him grounded and made him want to defend himself against his self-made tribunal. What do you mean at the moment of his death his soul was visited by the person Louis loved most in life so that he could give them his blessing what do you mean the thing that kept him from going deranged after coming back to life was making sure that Louis was ok what do you mean could be hands touch oh my god

At a time when Netflix is getting roundly criticized for forcing its shows to treat the audience like we have all of two brain cells to rub together, The Vampire Lestat is out here volleying everything from 70s gay references to 1700s Dutch Republic references at the speed of light while saying, "You don't get it? Well, that's a fucking you problem."

And I love that for us.

lestat is drowsy, drugged, unresponsive, and pulled into a kiss with someone whose been attracted to him from their first interaction. someone whom lestat is explicitly uninterested in but his overt sexuality is taken as permission enough

indicating lestat is once again poisoned and likely well aware of it. Inarguably he’s unwell, further evidenced by the haunting “muses” flashes

all being emblematic of lestats understanding of his own sexuality. The few seconds of screentime the moment gets is had with insignificance either because this isnt registered as a violation- if it is, its unremarkable enough to be considered worthless- or he’s not mentally present enough to really process it’s happening. Both options are bad, and it’s probably a mix of both. Contrast this to all of lestat’s sexual partners who are enthusiastic participants (note, with vested self interest)

After larry kisses lestat is a shot of TC and alex laughing. It’s fun! Everyone’s laughing! It’s a good time for as long as its agreed to be!

To set up the dynamic as a shipping trope, of classic band tension, framed by lestats cool laissez faire narration, distorts what’s really happening. It’s foretelling of how lestat thinks of himself and his relationships, from that with louis to gabriella to magnus.

The intensity of the abduction and rape will be incredibly confronting and horrifying I’m sure, but that behaviour of someone wanting lestat, and the manner in which lestat responds to it, are seeds already planted and present in conditioning the audience

Lestat is wild, lestat is loved, lestat is lusted for; these are all things he wants and what he gets is simply what he invites. The chaotic persona obfuscates the real severity of anything and the downplaying attitude is done with the entrancing cadence of a leader that pulls you into his world where you’re meant to do the same. Sympathizing with someone crossing his boundaries is already there and being playfully rationalized as “well he just wants Lestat so badly”. The most terrifying things are the insidious ones so inlaid its unquestioned, and the horror of magnus will half be in the realization that this is just an escalation of what youve already seen happen

Can't wait for people who hate The Vampire Lestat to maybe one day stop watching um, The Vampire Lestat, because while innocently scrolling the tag or browsing other socials, I've had to see multiple posts about how homophobic this season is and I'm like um. Do you mean the show where Lestat sings "I am a meteor / colliding / writing your name in dust as I fall" to a teary-eyed Louis while they stare into each other's eyes???? Or the show where Daniel shoves Armand against a wall and Armand starts talking about pseudo-stalking Daniel for most of his life??? Or the one where Lestat had sex in an elevator with a woman, a nonbinary person, and a man all at once?? Or the one where we see Nicki asking Lestat " are you going to teach me how to be a man, Lestat de Valois?" and then it cuts to them having sex in a candlelit flat? Ghost Claudia is searching desperately for her dead wife in some kind of purgatory??? That show?????

If anything, I've noted Lestat in his own POV, without Louis' own early shame about his sexuality muddling the view of himself and Lestat both, behaving in an even more queer way than before? His gender nonconformity, the way he speaks, his just general behavior. All of it is beating in the veins of the season. But whatever! People on the internet didn't get a sex scene exactly how they wanted it, or something, so that means it's not queer.

If you haven't already watched Autumn Brown's interview with episode 6 director Jane Wu, I highly recommend it. Autumn clearly loves and cares about the show and everything that goes into creating it.
