They’re also chordates, like us vertebrates! Their embryos have basically the same anatomy as ours, but the notochord, the part that becomes our spinal column, just remains a notochord until they’re ready to become a jelly bag forever. Then they digest the notochord as well as their own brain because they won’t need either of them.
So fucking jealous right now these little bastards get to just live their best life meanwhile I gotta drive 40 miles to work each morning and pay taxes

I always have to reboot this.
For anyone wondering, this is amazing enrichment for the animal and a great way to involve guests! The lions aren’t forced to play with the rope if they don’t want to, and these guys (and anyone else who tries this out) have an awesome close up and hands on experience, all without having to come in direct contact with the cat!
@why-animals-do-the-thing
This definitely counts as #actually cute. This video is from the San Antonio Zoo, and the lioness’ name is Axelle. As @ordinaryredtail said above, the tug of war interaction is entirely voluntary on her part.
My guess is that the zoo staff did use some positive reinforcement training to teach her how to pick up and pull on the rope at first, because that’s not necessary something a lion would just do on their own. While it’s also probable that she’s rewarded with something tasty did choosing to engage with the members of the public like this, Axelle wouldn’t be engaging if it was a negative experience for her (there aren’t enough snacks in the world to coerce a lion into doing something they find actively distressing). If she didn’t want to participate, she could just walk away.
Some sanctuary and animal rights groups have taken issue with this interaction because they consider it unethical to ask a lion to engage in any “unnatural behavior” “for the benefit of the public,” calling it exploitation. It is worth keeping in mind, however, that learning and engaging in novel behaviors is hugely enriching for animals in human care, and that lions have no concept of exploitation. As long as the lion is not bothered by the presence or noise of the crowd, is not injured or harmed, and is engaging on an entirely voluntary basis, this sort of thing is entirely ethical. It is far safer than any type of interaction where a member of the public is coming into direct context with a big cat, but still allows people to directly experience the sheer strength of a lion up close.

happy 9 day anniversary to this post 💖

Early Simpsons episodes said FUCK blue lives
It’s hard to conceptualize sometimes how much early Simpsons was counterculture and genuinely radical, before it became the hegemonic culture it had previously criticized
call me ignorant but i genuinely don’t understand why sports have to be split up by gender.
@ everyone in the notes talking about physical performance: if that were the case, then sports would be divided by physical performance. that’s a thing you can measure. that’s a thing that varies by individual. a weak man and a strong man would be an unfair fight in boxing/wrestling/MMA, which is why they divide those sports up into weight groups based on physical performance. but they also further segregate them based on gender. chess is segregated by gender for no reason but sexism. if it’s actually about skill and physical ability, then measure those and separate people by those metrics. don’t do some bullshit gender segregation and pretend like men and women are inherently on different levels no matter their individual abilities.
Remember that time a teenage girl struck out Babe Ruth? That’s fucking why. Men are afraid of being beaten by women.
Remember that time male swimmers were pulled out of training because Kate Ledecky was leaving them ‘broken’ by swimming better than them? Remember how she didn’t even notice, because she was busy actually training?
Shooting is a sport that has no reliance on strength and so any allowance for gender variation is irrelevant. The last time there was a mixed competition (1992) a chinese woman named Zhang Shan won it.
It’s often presented as for the benefit of women. After all, they’ll be heartbroken when they‘re hurt or bested by men.
Projection is a hell of a drug.
this is why they drug test Serena like crazy. the believe no woman should be that good. let alone a black woman. and black women have always been considered “manly” and less feminine.
also can we talk about how surfing is segregated as well? like how the dude who won this years international surfing cup or whatever was given $30,000 worth of prize money, while the woman who won the women’s comp was only awarded like $16,000 of prize money???? or whatever it was. but I know it was either half or less than half of what the man won. like why can’t they get the same prize money and when they’re competing internationally in the same competition? they surely have the same level of skill and talent.
the pay gap in sports between men and women is fucking insane.
The pay gaps, not to mention lack of sponsorships for women athletes who don’t look like models is insane. If you weigh over 250 pounds, no one will sponsor you. It’s why most female Olympic-class weightlifters live in poverty/out of their cars.
Reminder that in international (and usually national too) womens athletics anybody with 5m/mol of natural testosterone or higher is disqualified. (See legal case of Dutee Chand vs IAAF.)
Do you or somebody you know have PCOS? You are banned from international womens athletics because you are supposedly in posession of an unreasonable advantage in sports.
Folks disqualified for hyper-androgenism in womens athletics.
Francine Niyonsaba
Caster Semenya
Dutee Chand
Margaret Wambui

Why are those disqualified overwhelmingly black and brown? Because testing is case by case when an athletes performance “raises suspicions”. They overwhelmingly test athletes of colour, for being too fast and not meeting white expectations of femininity.
Racism and intersexism(discrimination against intersex people) in sports is abject evil. Desegregate sports.
bringing this back in light of the blatant racism and misogynoir in the olympics

Once again: it ain't over 'til it's over. Wear your mask. Social distance. Avoid large crowds
Yes, the CDC says you don't need a mask anymore when you're vaxxed. But the WHO disagrees. Better safe than sorry
yes please tell the olympic gold medalist how she’s shooting wrong
I just realized the reason so many people will call someone “an abuser” when the facts of the matter indicate instead that the person is actually simply “an asshole” is because you can’t just create engaging social media guilt by association drama by demanding people unfollow x or y if they’re simply an asshole, but if you re-reframe banal assholishness as genuine psychological abuse it means you can also start shit with anybody who associates with the asshole in question. That might also explain why people say “this person is a gaslighter” when they instead mean “this person says lies”.
Hey op, I’m trying to read you in the best way possible, but this sounds EXTREMELY insensitive to survivors of abuse.
It goes way past merely “insensitive.” Actually, it sounds pretty abusive in and of itself. It’s victim-blaming at its finest. “You’re not being abused, you’re just trying to create drama” - really? Nope.
See, you’ve actually proved the OPs point. You’ve gone out of your way to call something that absolutely was not abuse ‘abusive language’ (and also ‘victim blaming’, proving that you don’t know what those words mean, either) which does nothing except water down what abuse actually is and make it harder for people who are actually victims of abuse to get help.
At no point did the OP blame victims of abuse for that abuse. Pointing out that not all assholes are abusers and not all asshole behavior is abusive is not telling anyone who has been abused anything at all. At no point did the OP say ‘you weren’t really abused’ to a victim of abuse. What they did say is that a lot of people (especially online) are very quick to label assholish behavior as abuse (and also things like lying as gaslighting) which dilutes the meaning of abuse and, again, makes it harder for victims to get the help they need.
Not all assholes are abusers. Not all toxic relationships are abusive. Two people can simply be bad for each other (whether as friends, romantic partners, family, or anything else) without being abusive. It doesn’t mean that toxicity and assholish behavior are never abusive, but when you call someone ‘an abuser’ when the truth is (born out by whatever ‘evidence’ is provided) that they were just an asshole, you are doing no one any favors, least of all yourself or abuse victims in general. The same can be said of calling someone a gaslighter when the truth is that they’re just a liar, or lied about one thing, or disagreed with you on something trivial. (All of which I’ve seen called gaslighting and abuse in the past lmfao.)
OP: You shouldn’t use the word “abuse” for things that aren’t abuse
the people of tumblr, trying to start fights for literally no reason as always: ummm? but what if these hypothetical things that aren’t abuse…. ARE abuse???? i can’t believe you’re actually literally explicitly saying that people can’t say that abuse is abuse!!!!
